Constructs have the typical item slots as people do, so they can equip gear like armor as normal, right? Maybe with the price modifier for an unusual body, but it would still work?

The construct type is proficient with no armor, so adamantine full plate gives a big to-hit penalty.

Mithril chain shirt should work fine, though.

Edit: Unless the DM goes strict on the "A clay golem wears no clothing..." line. Could argue that's just flavor text, if the creator orders a golem to put on armor it should do so.

Yes, it works. But as Covenant12 mentioned they'll take penalties for non-proficiency.
Since constructs have bad BAB and rely mainly on physical attacks that's obviously a problem. There's no reason not to put them in something light though, especially considering the cost of even the weaker golems.
Same applies to undead, at least the humanoid ones. Though most of those already come with armor so you can just animate them with what they were wearing when they died unless you want to sell it.

I'm trying to think, is there any way to get a construct armor proficiency?

Yes, there is.

if the construct has intelligence and takes a class level then it should get the proficiencies of the class, or take feats per normal and take the armor prof.

Taking feats for Armor Profeciency, or taking a class level. Some constructs have the intelligence to do this already, and need simply change their feat selections. Others need to be given a mind capable of gaining feats through the Rudimentary Intelligence feat or the Awaken Construct spell.

Awaken Construct spell to give them intelligence at which point they can grab feats as they level up.

Unfortunately constructs are LA:- meaning unplayable, and if you give them sentience they can just give you the finger and walk away. They are friendly, not helpful, so if they want to explore the world to become a master chef and go on a quest to acquire a way to be able to taste food, you can't stop him without mind control spells, and mind controlling a magic immune construct is gonna take a while.

Indeed, you can slap armor on basically anything you want. Good 'ol Mithril Shirt says that any monster can just have +4 AC -of course so does potions of Mage Armor. And personally, I'd say if you need to buff the AC of melee monsters in order to compensate for the PCs, you might as well either nerf the PCs or just give the monsters more AC 'cause you're the DM. Even if its supposed to be something an NPC did "in character," you can still just make it an extra +8 natural armor and DR 3/- if you want, unless the party is supposed to loot this golem-shaped full-plate (which could be re-fitted to other Large golem-shaped creatures).

You can craft the Adamantine full plate as a magical item that grants Heavy Armor Proficiency for 20,000 gp.

You can probably talk your DM into granting the Golem Armor Proficiency for the same price during the process of creating it.

In Pathfinder you can create the Clay Golem with armor attached to it. It is proficient with this armor, but it can't remove or change it...

In the Dragonlance Setting a priest could grant the Golem the Sacred Guardian template for some money, which would grant the Golem intelligence, skills and feats...

Alternatively, Pathfinder's Building and Modifying Constructs (http://paizo.com/pathfinderRPG/prd/ultimateMagic/magic/buildingAndModifyingConstructs.html) section of the PRD has apricing g for simply building armor and weapons INTO any given Construct thereby eliminating the need for excessive hoop jumping to do something so simple as raise your overpriced rage golem's AC.

Edit: Crud, missed that it'd already been suggested. And a post up no less.

I would either use the "Armor For Unusual Creatures" rule for this (which increases the cost substantially) or else build the armor into the construct directly using the Modify Construct rules (which would make the armor difficult to remove.)

Note: Rudimentary Intelligence feat (Dragon #327, required Craft Construct and CL 12, aforementioned by Necroticplague) can give your construct Int score = ½ of it's creator's CL
Construct created with Rudimentary Intelligence gain skill points and feats for it's HD as usual, but "still bound to the will of its creator as normal"
Since Clay Golem have 11 HD, you may give it Armor Proficiency (Light)/(Medium)/(Heavy), and even Exotic Armor Proficiency - if you want to use the Mountain Plate
Cost is: +8000 gp for Rudimentary Intelligence, and 21500 for Adamantine Mountain Plate
