My daughter, away at college, wanted to play a half gnome and half halfling bard with the D&D club there, but fealt she had to go in with a viable racial template, at least as a jumping off point for the DM to approve or modify. So I whipped this off for her.

Gnomlings
Halflings and gnomes, while both small races, inhabit very different physical and social niches. Interbreeding between these races is rare, but they are biologically compatible and, well, anything possible will happen, if only now and then. The child of a gnome and a halfling is called a gnomling.

NOTE: Some of the racial traits of gnomes and halflings are functions of their respective cultures. Therefore, the traits of a gnomling can depend on the culture in which she was raised. This description applies to a gnomling raised in a halfling community.

Personality: Gnomilngs inherit a great natural curiosity from both their parents. Whether they are experimenting with something or looking over the next hill, they are always eager to find something out.
But most gnomlings are also home bodies at heart. While they may leave their homes to explore, to seek their fortunes, or just to stretch their legs, they generally tend to return home eventually.

Physical Description: Gnomlings height is similar to their parents, with very few below 3 feet, and only a few as tall as 3’6”. They generally weigh about 40 pounds. Their skin color would not be out of place on either a gnome or a halfling, from ruddy to ruddy brown. Their hair and eye color most often follows that of a halfling – black hair and brown or black eyes – but blond hair and/or blue eyes appear sometimes. A gnomling reaches adulthood at about age 30. There have not been enough gnomlings known to establish a typical lifespan, but they are expected to live 250 years or more if curiosity does not lead them into trouble first.

Relations: Gnomlings tend to be easy going, and get along well with most other people. Members of the larger races are likely to mistake them for gnomes or halflings, and react to them accordingly. Gnomes and halflings are more likely to recognize them for what they are. Halflings may react to them with suspicion, and gnomes with curiosity, but neither is likely to react with hostility.

Alignment: Gnomlings tent toward the good alignments, though some are neutral. Evil gnomlings are rare, considerably rarer even than gnomlings in general.

Religion, etc.: In most other respects, gnomelings resemble either gnomes, halflings, or neither, depending on the culture in which they were raised.

Gnomling Racial Traits

+2 to either Dex or Con (player’s choice) and -2 to strength. Gnomlings lack strength like both of their parents, and gain either the gnome’s toughness or the halfling’s agility, but never both.
Small: As a Small creature, a gnomling gains a +1 size bonus to Armor Class, a +1 size bonus on attack rolls, and a +4 size bonus on Hide checks, but she uses smaller weapons than humans use, and her lifting and carrying limits are ¾ of those of a Medium size character.
A gnomling’s base land speed is 20.
+2 racial bonus to Listen checks.
+2 save bonus against illusions.
+1 bonus to the DC for saves against illusions cast by gnomlings.
+2 dodge bonus to AC against monsters of the giant type.
Low-light vision.
