would using a quarter staff as a poler arm master so you can use shield master be a good idea. i know you would loss damage but would the shield masters abilities make up for it. also are there any cool magic staff you could get if you did this

debatable if its worth it, you get one attack, at d6, per round when a creature first enters your threatened area...

also, most of the 'good' staves(Q.Staff) are druid/warlock/wizard only.. unless you homebrew ofc, your looking at +1 maybe +2. but nothing 'fancy'

Before Xanathar and the Hexblade was printed the Shilleigh spell was the only way to key melee attacks off of Wisdom or Charisma. Its still a nice way to up your damage if it makes sense for the character.

The real problem is the bonus action competition between the Shield Master shove to prone and the PAM extra attack. The two feats don't do well together.

PAM with a quarterstaff and shield is excellent, but doesn't work well with Shield Master since you're competing for Bonus Action use. An extra attack is strictly better than a bonus action to shove prone (since you are allowed to use one of your attacks to attempt to shove prone anyway).
So, the only benefit you get from Shield Master in that case is the help on Dex saves, which is inferior to Resilient (Dex).

One of the best builds for a Polearm Mastery Quarterstaff user is the Nature Cleric/Fighter build

Pick a Hill Dwarf (+2 Con +1 Wis) because you can use Heavy Armor without any drawbacks from your low STR.
Point Buy (STR 8 , DEX 14 , CON 16 , WIS 16 , INT/CHA 10) You can dump INT or CHA to boost the other by +1 if you feel the need.
You need the high DEX to multiclass Fighter, and it is also just useful to have for all sorts of things.

Fighter lvl 1 is probably your best bet, as they get better starting equipment and skills.
Take the Dueling fighting style so that you get +2 Damage with your quarterstaff (this applies to both attacks made with the Polearm Mastery Feat)
Cleric Nature Domain lvl 2 lets you pick up some great utility spells as well as Shillelagh (Druid cantrip). This allows your Quarterstaff to deal 1d8 and uses WIS as your attack and damage modifier.
At level 5 you will gain access to your first ASI so pick up Polearm Mastery.

You can decide whether to stick with the Cleric tree for more spellcasting and utility, or go full fighter for the extra attacks and ASIs.
Nature Cleric's gets 1d8 extra damage per turn on a weapon attack at lvl 8 which gets more powerful later on, so sticking cleric can be a nice option.
Fighter gives you access to Combat Maneuvers and extra attacks, as well as a higher health pool, although being a Hill Dwarf with 16 Con goes a long way already.

The weapon your looking for is

Staff of Striking
Staff, very rare (requires attunement)

This staff can be wielded as a magic quarterstaff that grants a +3 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with it.

The staff has 10 charges. When you hit with a melee attack using it, you can expend up to 3 of its charges. For each charge you expend, the target takes an extra 1d6 force damage. The staff regains 1d6 + 4 expended charges daily at dawn. If you expend the last charge, roll a d20. On a 1, the staff becomes a nonmagical quarterstaff.
