View Full Version : Playing an Anarch or specialising in controlling Limbo in combat?

The plane of Limbo is cool because theoretically, any player could use its planar characteristics to basically become a spellcaster for a few minutes. Or invent firebending in D&D. Or copy those fight scenes in the Doctor Strange film that were full of giant buildings unfolding everywhere around and under the characters.

And D&D fluff occasionally mentions the Anarchs, people who are very good at this. Sometimes it seems to be through high Will saves, sometimes it sounds racial, and sometimes it seems to be through some kind of class or feat.

Where can I find rules for this? Prestige classes, builds, more detailed rules?
I find this very cool and really want to play this.

You might want to take a look at the Anarchic Initiate PrC from Complete Psionic. It's built around the overchannel mechanic from the wilder class, and has a few Limbo based abilities. (Notably opening a "breach" in reality, allowing the energies of Limbo through.)

With a bit of doing, you can get into planar shepherd (Faiths of Eberron) without the absurdity of a straight druid entry and the 5th level planar bubble feature will let you walk around wrapped in a little slice of limbo.

Easiest route looks like wild shape ranger with the spontaneous summoner feat.

That last one is pretty cool: it allows me to fight as if I were on Limbo. But I was mostly looking for things that would be good if I were already on Limbo.
Manipulating Limbo seems to require Wis checks. Any way to max those out, beyond just raising Wisdom like crazy?

I could always just raise that as much as I could and then just discuss limits of Limbo manipulation with my GM once the session starts :/

How about Wild Mage? Completely revel and embrace in pure chaos. Then carve out a piece of Limbo for yourself later on.

I think there's also an option for an Aligned Wizard (can't remember where it was, trying to look for it) that you can use with Wild Mage for extra chaos flavor.

Only thing that comes to mind there is to see if you can get the DM to okay a wis equivalent for the circlet of persuasion. Call it a torc of perception or the like.

Well, that and anything that gives blanket bonuses to skill and ability checks like the luck stone.

If you're willing to back port some PF stuff, Occult Adventures is quite good at this, especially the Dr. Strange stuff.

The Chaos Flask seems to indicate shaping Limbo is simply a matter of having really high Wisdom.

Well, firstly - Anarch is CN variant of Paladin in Dragon #310

Classes which are able - more or less - to control or adapt to planar traits:
Horizon Walker (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/prestigeClasses/horizonWalker.htm)
Planar Champion (Manual of the Planes)
Planeshifter (Manual of the Planes)
Planar Vanguard (http://archive.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/psm/20031219a)

Besides that - pump your Wis up - check the Jermlaine and Anthropomorphic Animals; Dark Dwarf Savant may give +2 at the very 1st level; Marshal with Motivate Wisdom aura; Reforged (Races of Eberron) at 2nd level gives +2 on Wis checks; as the last resort - Forsaker may grant +1/level

Also, stockpile re-rolls - there are [luck] feats, Chaotician (Planar Handbook) may re-roll 1/day with Destiny's Arbiter, and Xaositect (Dragon #287) - 3/day+1 (Chance's Friend and Chance's Master)

Psymbiot feat gives +2 on ability checks
Imbued Healing - with Knowledge domain - +2 insight on ability checks

Spells:
Feast of Champions - +1 morale on ability checks for 12 hours
Animal Spirit (Magic of Incarnum): +2 insight on Wisdom checks for hour/level
Dragonblood Affinity (Dragons of Faerūn): +2 on ability checks for min./level
Good Hope - +2 morale on ability checks for min./level
Focusing Chant (Spell Compendium): +1 circumstance on ability checks for 1 minute
Ray of Hope (Book of Exalted Deeds): +2 morale on ability checks for 1 round/level
Finally, there is the Perinarch spell (Spell Compendium), which grants you automatic control of Limbo in close range

Isn't there the one spell: Perniarch, that allows you to control a divinely morphic plane, such as limbo?

Perniarch is cool, but it's very specific in what it can do. It really only allows crude, general control over your environment. The normal rules for controlling Limbo seems to be similar: all those spells can do to damage enemies or defend yourself seems to be "make the environment very hostile having cast protective spells on yourself beforehand", which kinda sucks.

What about things like "I twist the ground under your feet" or "I turn this gust of wind into fire"? Or "I make a door appear in this wall" or "I raise a stone wall between us".
I was hoping there'd be ways to do this. Probably not super powerful and requiring Wis tests each time or something.

Long before that, Anarch was a thing in Planescape, and that's what this thread is about.

Ask Google about "Planescape Anarch" -- here's one of the first hits: http://mimir.net/sects/anarchs.shtml
