I’ve seen this come up before, but haven’t really seen much of a solid answer. I suspect the only real answer is “ask your DM.” But what do you think happens RAW if you Polymorph a fellow PC and then cast Awaken on them?

(Assuming you have a work around for cast time such as a wish spell.)

Awaken takes 8 hours. Polymorph lasts up to an hour. Now True Polymorph + Awaken might do something, but it rests very solidly in the who the heck knows, ask your DM camp.

Can't you wish it to happen quickly, though?

I suppose that yes you could, but why would you spend a ninth level spell of Wish for a regular Polymorph that will end in a max time of one hour? If you can cast Wish, why not cast true polymorph and make something permanent before awakening it?

Frankly, even if you awaken something that has been polymorphed, as soon as the polymorph end (through dispel, lose of HP, lose of concentration) you revert back to your original form and stats anyways

The only things that the target retains are alignment and personality when they are polymorph-ed. Everything else about them is replaced with the game statics of the what they are turned into.

Therefore if you change the game statics of what they are turned into, you have not accessed of effected the person that was changed. You have just awoken a new entity with the same alignment and personality.

See the thing is Awaken is instant AKA super permanent. There is no reason RAW that the effects of Awaken wouldn’t carry over once polymorph’s duration is over.

So the ones that matter are the changing of int to 10 (which would be a buff for those that dumped it) and the potential acquisition of a new language.

Not really. Those changes apply to the beast form gained from Polymorph. Once Polymorph ends, you'll get back all your original statistics, no matter what happened to the beast.

That’s a pretty liberal reading of the spell.

What all effects end when the spell ends? If a polymorph effect ends do other spells effecting the creature end immediately? Including other instant (permanent) effects?

Is a polymorphed creature effectively immune to Flesh to Stone for this reason? Does stopping concentrating break effects like charm and confusion etc?

As far as I can tell the spell says nothing about breaking or stopping other effects.

Polymorph replaces your statistics. Awaken changes the statistics you've replaced them with. When Polymorph ends, your statistics returns to what they were before (possibly not including HP, if the Polymorph was broken by damage).

Flesh to Stone does turn you into stone. When Polymorph ends, you'll get back your original statistics, but you keep the petrified condition. If the statue turns into humanoid when the Polymorph duration expires is up to the GM, but even if not, you should immediately return to your humanoid form once de-petrified.

It may break some charm effects, because you may no longer be valid target thanks to your creature type being different. It also makes you immune to Charm Person, because you're not humanoid while you're polymorphed.

That seems like the most logical interpretation. What about the 30 day charm effect though?

The awakened beast or plant is charmed by you for 30 days

Based on the "beast or plant" part, I would rule it as noted in my previous post: once your creature type changes, you're no longer valid target for the charm effect. It would also end if you get Polymorphed again (beast to another beast), as the "awakened beast" statistics would be replaced by base beast statistics once more.
