I'm playing a flaming skull bard. I want a cool thing to ride on. CR either 1/2 or 2, depending on if you're going to suggest a regular or greater steed. My first idea was a helmed horror, but the cr is too high. Hit me up.

A zombie with no head.
A skeleton with no head.
Animated Armor.

Basically, anything where you can be its head.

An imp or pseudo-dragon who wears you as a helmet.

A raven who carries you in its claws.

You're mounted on another wizard's quarterstaff.

As the hood ornament to an Apparatus of Kwalish.

On top of a quarterstaff (staff of power or staff of magi preferably) and make some flunky carry you around.

Animated armor (you get to live inside the helmet) gives you the look you're after, and at a CR to match.

Another, bigger, flaming skull. Which itself rides an even bigger flaming skull. It's skulls all the way down.

Don't forget to put gems in your eye sockets and to pretend to be a demi-lich !

Side question : what stats do you use for playing a flaming skull as a PC?

A Halfling. Put a trenchcoat over the both of you so that you appear to be a normal-sized person.

That's what the magic gems/eyes are good for. You don't even need the lens frames!
Eyes of charming?
A water elemental gem for the irony?
A luckstone with an iounstone for the non-winking eye that is also the prison gem for a demilich?

Animated Armor would be my "serious" recommendation. With crawling claws in the gauntlets for emergencies.

A zombie with no head.
A skeleton with no head.
Animated Armor.

Basically, anything where you can be its head.

Or perhaps in its belly, like Krang from TMNT.

Edit: Then you could put a fake "head" on it to confuse people who like to take Called Shots. ;)

As the hood ornament to an Apparatus of Kwalish.

Or inside the Apparatus of Kwalish on a gear shift.

Building on earlier ideas:

A Flameskull, riding on the shoulders of Strahd's Animated Armor, riding on the back of a Nightmare.

The Animated Armor utilizes a chain whip for additional fun.

I don't run the kind of campaign where someone would use a singing, flaming skull as a codpiece.

But if I did, I would.

Oh man ... this is so strange, but there is a zombie beholder that has lost its central eye. The flaming skull has set up shop in the zombie beholder's ravaged eye-socket - and it flies him around!

And yes it's still got 2 or 3 top eye stalks that do shoot (probably not dis. ray, but some of the other rays)!

A helmet, neck gorget, and set of shoulder pauldrons of a set of plate armor, trailing a tattered cape.

That levitating through hallways would be awesome.

Cast Find Steed.

Fluff whatever you get as a Harley Davidson motorcycle, with a body attached to the seat.

Call self Ghost Rider.

Now I want to name the skull Nabu.

There's a lot of comic bookery in this one.

A wonderful idea! Definitely noted for the future!

and I'm using the Monstrous Races rulebook, it's 3 bucks off dm's guild! it lets you play as anything in the phb

EDIT: Phb?? I meant the monster manual

Dude, there was an Unearthed Arcana a while back for modern D&D settings that literally had a spell called "Find Vehicle". What's more, the vehicle always appears magical and celestial/fey/fiendish.

Problem solved, with no need for fluff!

You could have the mount be the body of an Arvak like horse

But instead a flaming skull for the head

Either have a magic ball so you can become the soccer ball robot from Starwars, but a fantasy setting. Did someone say brown mold?

Carried around on a dinner platter by a zombie waiter.
