it came up in another thread (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?552730-How-to-cast-spells-on-your-corpse-(Level-6-Sorcerer))

what happens when a familars master dies? what happens to the familiar?

http://www.d20srd.org/srd/classes/sorcererWizard.htm#familiars
http://www.d20srd.org/srd/classes/sorcererWizard.htm#sorcererFamiliar

it states what happens to the master if the familiar dies, but not the other way around
also a familiar gets abilities based on masters level, what happens if the familiar doesn't have a master anymore, master is dead or the familiar gets dismissed?

not something I ever thought about till now, wondering if there are any rules, references or what not floating around out there

Tome and Blood has rules about this in the first chapter: the familiar loses any extra hp and skills it gained from its master but is otherwise treated as if it had a master 2 level lower (so an ex-familiar of a dead 10th-level Sorcerer would have +4 natural armor, 9 Int and all the special abilities of an 8th-level familiar).

In Neverwinter Nights: Shadows of Undrentide, you encounter a rat that was the familiar of the captain of a buried ruin of the city of Undrentide who goes a little bit into complaining about he was left alive and alone after his master wizard died.

That's where I first encountered a reference to familiars having special circumstances when their masters died.

The only post that I can remember exploring that idea is this (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showsinglepost.php?p=19184669&postcount=95)

The relevant quote from the link
A familiar whose master dies retains some of its abilities, although it is treated as the familiar of a master two levels lower (minimum level 1). These rules were provided in Tome and Blood (page 12), and remain legal since they were never updated/reprinted/errata'ed

I think this is the origin of tibbits, so basically they become tiny were-people.

after I posted I remembered tibbits and cracked open dragon compendium, they're only descended from familars, nothing specifc tho

answers that question for me, thanks
