My idea was to use them to help create a new campaign setting.

Sure? I don't see anything which requires you to use the characters in a specific setting. The biggest concern will be the skills on a few species: Tactics as a horse (Avoirdupois?) skill is based on the idea that they are militaristic and expansionistic. Past that, though, there is nothing preventing you from using the system and characters in another setting.

Note that I've not read throught the 2nd edition of the game system, although I'm sure it's in a mostly similar situation.

I'm actually working on the reverse right now... Taking Ironclaw and converting it to using the Urban Jungle/Vital Hearts version of the rules (basically Ironclaw 3rd edition)

I've got Races, I've got 7 archetypes, (Based on social upbringing- Gentry, Guilder, Academic, Errantry, Freedman, Scoundrel, Atavist) and I've got most of the carears converted, but I still need to do Magic and equipment.
