As the headline says, what is the best magic item of rare quality for a wizard?
Druid has staff of the woodlands but is there anything similarily good for a wiz?

Any of the Staves? Tomes? Robes? Not really sure. Tentacle Rod could be viable, as it has a range of 15 feet, does moderate damage, and it doesn’t use your own physical stats; plus, it can restrain enemies. Basically like a short-range panic-button cantrip. Something that boosts defense would also be good, as Wizards are rather squishy.

Wizard has some good choices at higher rarities in Tome of the Stilled Tongue And Robe of the ArchMagi (That’s viable for anybody really).

Its just one of the many characters I made when bored in anticipation of the next time I will get to play(probably never. xD ). We said level 10, free feat at level 1 and 2 rare and 1 uncommon magic item
at start, this toon is a rock gnome fighter 2 evoker 8 with the gnome racial feat as his free feat for +1INT and invis when hit reaction. Other two ASI´s spent on +2 INT and though feat.

Attributes after feats and ASI´s are: 8/14/16/20/10/8.

Magic items before asking for opinions are as rare: +2 shield and ring of protection, uncommon: cloak of protection.
This with half plate gives him good saves and a 24 AC with defense fighting style.

There is bit more about the character if that helps. :)

For an evoker, a wand of fireballs seems pretty fitting. Yes you can already cast fireball at a higher DC but this lets you do it seven more times. And not all enemies are worthy of a spell slot.

Wait.. Fighter level 2? That's double fireball Action Surge! You need this!

Tentacle Rod doesn't quite fit you, as pleasurable as it is.

The Staff of Charming is better than it sounds. It has lots of charges, you use your own DC and you can cast Command with it. Doesn't really scream evoker though.

Even though it sounds more druid-y the Staff of Swarming Insects is great.

Do you want items that do stuff, or items that protect you?

Defensively, the Cloak of Displacement and Mantle of Spell Resistance are both nice. The Ring of Free Action will probably save your life at some point, and if you're a big fan of crowd control, is highly valuable. The Periapt of Proof Against Poison is situational, but amazingly useful when the situation arises, and it doesn't take an attunement slot.

Offensively, I quite like the Wand of Fear, or one of the various Elemental summoning items (if, and only if, you have Warcaster and a decent Con save!)

Utility-wise, the Ring of Spell Storing is always a good choice.

The big game changers

Robe of the archmage
Staff of Power
Staff of the magi
Rod of absorption

The rest = icing on the wizard cake of power.

word of advice.... if u plan on a long term game always pick items that dont use up attunement.... periphait of wounding, poison, and health. .. also certain things that summon elementals are such items because the party generally will find other items later that are awesome but require attunement
