View Full Version : Rules Q&A Can a displaced beast wear a Helmet of Opposite Alignment?

The question in the title is rather specific but here's a broader one:

Helmets are pieces of armor, and armor is subject to wearer's size.

So what happens if we have a helmet that is cursed or useful (or both!) and a grig, a giant, an aboleth and a displacer beast want to wear it? What happens?

I would like to have RAW and RAI answers, please.

Magic armor changes size.

I'd say that since it does not actually grant any AC bonus, it should count as a "garment" or a piece of clothing, rather than armour- which do resize:

think of it as basically a "Metal Hat".

The helmet is a wondrous item, not armor.

Same with magical gauntlets.

As per the SRD:

Size And Magic Items
When an article of magic clothing or jewelry is discovered, most of the time size shouldn’t be an issue. Many magic garments are made to be easily adjustable, or they adjust themselves magically to the wearer. Size should not keep characters of various kinds from using magic items.

There may be rare exceptions, especially with racial specific items.
