Hey there guys!

When I very first read the PHB's rules for learning a new tool or language, I was taken aback at how.... bad... they are. Seriously. The way they're written, you should probably just never even bother trying to get a new tool or language, let alone quickly enough for it to matter.

So in my games I use a different, better, system. Or at least I think it's better. I use it for when a player (you guessed it) wants a new tool or language, and also for plot hooks that I don't want them to have yet, but want to seed now (like research projects, etc etc).

If you decide to use this, I recommend limiting projects to 1 per day. Also consider raising or lowering the DC depending on environment. Perhaps slogging through a swamp isn't the best time to try breaking that cypher, eh?
