Scourge of the Slave Lords
A classic adventure updated to 5E for 4-6 level 10 characters

Answering a call for worthy champions of justice, you assemble at the court of Lord Stan of Safeton, at his great diet of assembled local lords.

You enter a magnificent hall and present yourselves before the great lords of the realm and their courtiers. Nobly becrowned and plumly robed, Lord Stan rises and addresses you with refreshing brevity.

"For years, pirates and slavers have raided the Sea of Gearnat and the Wild Coast, heedless of bribes and privateering contracts! We, this assembly of high and pristine rules have gathered information that the slaver's base is in a ruined temple in the lawless city of Highport! Infiltrate their base, kill the slavers, shut down their operation and free the slaves! And be quick about it!"

The court wizard, a dour man in a pointy hat and a long beard, snaps his fingers. Motes of sparkly dust surround you and with an audible POP! You vanish!

"What if they fail, my Lord Stan?" asks his colleague the high Lord Barry.
"Then we find another party of fools to carry on in their stead. Adventurers are literally born for this sort of thing."

Welcome to HighPort, a place that used to be something, but now really isn't. Pomarj's shining city has seen better days, but after years of war, tyranny and political negligence, it is now a ruined backwater. Thanks to the corrupt and selfish lords that run the place, there is coin to be bad in the black trades of trafficking, slavery and smuggling.

It is raining, which seems about right given the ruined buildings all around you that make up what we will generously call a street. Many people here clearly still live in the basements of their homes, for even though the wars have been over these past ten years, economic and social recovery are far from returning.

Tikk snorts audibly as they are popped to their destination. "Oy, dat decerated fop didna give us no time ta prep!" He shakes himself off and checks to make sure nothing glittery has attached itself to him. Tikk stood all of 3 whole feet tall and weighed in at a whopping 40 lbs and yes, that was soaking wet. He was as ornery and outspoken as the day was long and listening to him you'd think he was a 7' tall barbarian. He wasn't really scared of anything, that he had run into as of yet at least. He was brutally practical to a fault, and had more than once ended polite questioning of a bandit with a crossbow bolt to the face. "Done is done", he would say and just move on. People often mistook his mannerisms for evil but he was in fact incredibly loyal to his friends, just don't ever mention that fact to him.

"Did ye even get an offer fer doin dis little service fer 'im?" he asked no one in particular.

A young human woman looked quite displeased at the sudden teleportation and the subsequent rain. "Hmph! A lord though he may be, that was no way to treat a lady. I have half a mind to write a scathing song about it. When I was called to his halls, I thought it was for a performance there!" she said with a hint of aloof arrogance that was some hybrid of the entitlement of nobility and the cockiness of a seasoned adventurer. Magical transportation always turned her stomach, not that she would ever let on to that. She was, if one was willing to be honest, breathtakingly beautiful, and even off-put by the rude lord and the sudden rain she exuded swagger and confidence.

Oddly, she seemed to lack almost any gear at all, clad only in a well-made traveling Bard's costume with leather armor hidden underneath, with a single pouch at her hip. She brushed back a strand of her long red hair and glanced at the rest of the assembled group and spoke again. "Well, I take it the rest of you were as put-off by that abrupt conversation as I was?"

Lothlorien rolls her eyes a bit at the entitlement of the bard, shaking her head a bit as well. "A short conversation is the least of our worries. Freeing these people and stopping the slavers is more important than some Lord getting to the point and showing us the door. We are here, now, might as well get down to business. Let us go find this ruined temple and start to cleanse it of the slavers." It was an odd thing, when you looked at Lothlorien. Even though it was cloudy and raining, her plate armor looked almost as though it was still shining and gleaming in the sunlight. Her shield, which was emblazoned with the symbol of Pelor, was strapped to her back on top of a greatsword. While a Morningstar hung at her waist, and a cloak strapped around her neck that hung over the shoulders and back of her armor. Her chest piece also had a flower on the front of it with a purple gemstone in the middle of it, and if you could see her should pieces, they would also have the symbol of Pelor on them. Lothlorien may look fare and beautiful, but there was definitely a roughness and an edge to her that you could almost cut yourself on if you were not careful.

Not wasting any time, Lothlorien started to march towards what might look like an Inn or Tavern to try and get information on this temple, "Come, we need to get information." She didn't really wait for a response.

As the group arrives, Ostrezor has already found something to criticize. That Teleport was shoddy work. Did any of you feel the quantum flux, or the slight wobble in the metaphysical realm? Amateur... Ostrezor scoffs. A tall, thin, very-obviously-a-wizard elf, he was not someone you wanted to displease, although he tended to complain about things that didn’t matter that much. Euriditic to a fault, many of his words don’t make sense to anyone but him. He’s not quiet: if he’s silent, it’s usually not because he chose to be quiet.

His robes, growing wetter by the minute, are a neutral shade of grey, with some red and orange highlights. His staff is made from an oak branch, with a wooden knot at the top that looks like a swirling flame.

Kalaham begins to speak but just as the words start to form in his mouth he finds himself in another location. Looking around him he sees the decrepit buildings of a war torn city, something he is all too familiar with. The realization dawns on him as to what happened and as the others prattle on he just focuses inward, in order to prevent an outburst of anger. Over the years since he fought and lost his homeland his hatred of mages has not subsided one bit and his hunt has never stopped. That was until he had come across this group. While he still has much disdain for those who are so cavalier with their arcane abilities he isn't as quick now to cut them down. About a year ago Lothlorien invited Kalaham to join the group she had been in for a while. Seeing as how she was someone he actually admired and trusted as a shield sister he decided to join up. Through her softer heart, at least in terms of sparing others, as well as traveling with an established spell caster who has saved Kalaham once or twice, he certainly isn't as quick anymore to just march right back to that court and teach that wizard a lesson in control and respect.

Letting out a smooth focused sigh Kalaham marches on behind Lothlorien and towards the tavern. "Come now everyone. Lets get inside."

"Well that was quick. Usually those noble types are foppish and pompous, good to see that at least one of them has a good head on their shoulders." he says, looking at the faces of those who are apparently to be his companions for the upcoming journey. "Donner Gewitter, Cleric of Mirrodin with a penchant for the electrical." He says, sticking a hand out towards the party, aiming to nobody in particular.

Introductions made, you follow Lothlorien up the street to a likely looking "establishment". The squat stone building is missing an entire wall, but a ramshackle barricade of rubble and fencing keeps out the worst of the rain. You can hear the plink-plonk of an untuned piano through the door. Over the door, a battered sign reads "The Highwayman's Rest". The picture shows a gloomy gibbet on a rain-lashed moor.

When you open the door, the pianist hits an off-key and the murmur of chatter stops. A dozen pairs of eyes scrutinise you. After a second, then tension pops, the eyes turn away and the music picks up again.

The tavern is a basic affair, one large room with a bar at one end. There are ten tables, each one "decorated" with a bucket to catch the drips of rain coming through the leaky roof. A meager fire keeps out the worst of the chill, making the tavern weirdly cosy.

Kalaham gives Ziva a little nudge and leans in close enough for her to hear him whisper, "Alright Ziva, do your thing. We all know you're best at collecting info. Remember, we are looking for a ruined temple." After speaking he finds a table large enough for the group. If there isn't one he finds two unoccupied tables close enough to each other that everyone can sit at and then plops himself down. Finally getting to rest a bit after the long travel to the court followed by being transported here.

With that jab done she parted from the group for a moment to ply her skills.

Figuring she might as well get a drink AND visit the person most likely to know the local news, she made her way over to the bar. Leaning against it with a smirk and an air of casual confedence, she spoke "Hey barkeep, just traveled quite a far distance in quite a short time, please tell me you have something half-decent to drink back there for me."

Drinks first, THEN questions. A paying customer was afforded a bit more attention and grace than some freeloader who just walked in asking questions after all.

The barman leers unashamedly at you before fumbling for a bottle.
"Oh! For a fine lady such as yer'self, how about 15 year ol' Ekbir brandy? Finest sup in the city." He pours glass of amber brandy into what might possibly be the only clean glass in the tavern.

Ziva took a measured sip of the brandy, savoring the vintage. She preferred a good red wine, but her pallet could enjoy a wide variety of spirits. Far from being off-put by the learning she smirked at the attention. She smirked at the bartender while swirling the drink in her glass and spoke. "Well well, aren't you a gentleman. I was worried when I came to town that I would not find anyone so polite. Why, I even heard that a group of slavers of all things took up resedence in this town. Have you heard anything about them?" She inquired, digging for information.

"I won't tell anyone, I promise." She added with a less cocky and slightly more flirty tone.

Speaking more to you cleavage than your face, the bar man spills his knowledge.

"Looking for skin are ye'? You want the old Boccob temple. There're some djinn, queer folk, might you, that'll be able to hook you up. You'd need a writ of invitation though, if you want in. They only sell to trusted buyers. Them as inquire without one end up roasted for the crows. Seen it more than once from the upstart gangster in town. No one messes with the djinn."

As the group walked into the tavern, Ostrezor realized two things, both of which filled him with horror:
This was a place where he would be expected to talk, and that he couldn’t solve this problem with a Fireball. With a hearty harrumph, he sat down in a corner of the room, pulling up his cloak to deflect prying eyes. He then motioned for a drink, sweeping his eyes around the room to took for any sign of trouble.

The bar man shrugs. "That I don't know. You have to fill out some requests with the city council and wait for approval. I'm not privy to the process though. All I know is, show up at the front door without one and you're in trouble! That'll be four silver, by the way," he adds, indicating the empty glass. Ziva actually gained a small bit of respect for the man for having the presence of mind to ask for his money. She supposed that living in such a run-down place it was a high priority on his mind. "Very well sir. May I just say that was a surprisingly excellent vintage." With that, she reached into the pouch on her side and pulled out four sliver coins, placing them on the counter in front of the man with perhaps more flourish than was strictly needed. "I may just come back for a second round later. For now, however, my...assistants no doubt need instructions. Can't leave them alone for a minute can I?"

With that she gave one final smile, and sauntered over to the table the rest of the party was sitting at. taking a seat of her own, she looked across the faces of her party and then spoke. "Yea, the old Boccob temple is definitely the place to go for all one's slave needs. Apparently the djinn are always ready to hook someone up. Unfortunately in order to GET in, we'll need a writ of invitation. The city council might give us one if we're willing to go through some dumb approval process."

Ziva leaned back and put her hands behind her head with a look of thought upon her face. "Between the first person I asked telling me about the slave market like I was asking where the blacksmith was, and the fact that the city council is handing out documentation for the slavers, we should assume that many if not most of the people in this town are not on our side in this, it isn't just a powerful underworld boss, this is corruption city-wide."

Kalaham listens closely to Ziva's explanation. She was always good at collecting info and was indeed a reliable source. He ponders for a few moments before opening his mouth and speaking in a hushed tone as to prevent any patrons from hearing, "Hmm, not exactly a likable situation. A small guerrilla team inside the enemy stronghold....." He trails off a bit there thinking. "Well we don't want to go in bows twanging and lose all of our current advantage. I like a forward assault as much as the next warrior," He stops to give a little nod at Lorien, "But if we are outnumbered and have other potentials to pursue we might as well."
Resting his hands on the table Kalaham lays out his thoughts on a plan, "Way I see it we have two options. 1: Tikk sneaks in and steals a writ, although we'd have to forge it to look appropriate. OR 2: We have two sneak in and find a way for the rest of us to get in or they can do a little sabotaging."

He looks around the table after finishing his speech, "Thoughts?"

With a plan in action, you set forth!

How are you going to assault the temple? If you want to kill the buyer, you need to find him with an Intelligence (investigation) check or a Charisma Pursuasion/Intimidation check to get the info.

Kalaham rises from the table and clasps his hand on the halflings shoulder, a move he often forgets the squirrelly one doesn't like. He's quickly reminded of that when Tikk pushes his hand off. "My apologies but excellent find Tikk!" He looks around to the others and lowers his tone, "Perfect, we'll find the buyer, take his place and sneak in that way, and to the surprise of the traders it just so happens that the buyer is also dealing with slaves now. Maybe offer up a few in an attempt to sweeten the deal."

He ponders for a moment, "Hmm who will pose as the buyer... I was thinking Ziva as she would be excellent for it but the buyer sounds to be a male.... Ostrezor, is there anything you can do about that?"
Kalaham leaves the question hanging in the air. Knowing how he gets ahead of himself and talk over the others if they'll let him. It's not something he usually does unless it comes to strategy or fights... really the only things he's been good at.

Lothlorien listened to the plans and the information, nodding along. "I am afraid that I would not be much good when it comes to looking like a slaver. What with a rose on my plate and the symbol of Pelor upon me.....I do not think I would be the best at being a buyer or even a slave. It may be best if I were to hang around a corner and wait for a signal from you all. Having an agent of Pelor might not be the best of ideas for a group of slavers." She then remembers a piece of information, "However, Ostrezor, I believe you said something about invisibility? Perhaps I might borrow some of your invisibility so I may stay closer with the group when we are ready to pounce?" She smiles at him, and it is quite a genuine and attractive smile. Sometimes, with all the armor on, people forget she is a woman. But she does a simple thing, such as a smile or a giggle, and somehow her femininity comes gracefully dancing out.

Suddenly, the elf’s ears prick up and he looks suddenly distracted.

Almost as if he were hearing some internal orders, he nods solemnly and looks up.

“I must go,” he says. “My homeland is in dire need of aid. I am sorry”

Before you can respond, he bows to you all, invokes a magical circle and vanishes.

Kalaham watches as the mage in their party suddenly rises from the table. Even though they have traveled together and Ostrezor seems nice enough Kalaham has always kept an eye on him. It's in the nature of mages to use their powers for wicked deeds... History has shown that time and time again.

Ostrezor apologizes to the group and then within a moment teleports away. Kalahams eyes narrows as he stares at the leftover smoke drifting up towards the ceiling. "Coward." One word, all Kalaham wants to say on the matter. He may have begun to trust the wizard but this moment only served as a reminder for Kalaham. "Don't get comfortable around them. They'll never change."

He looks at the others, "Well that's that. The plan shouldn't change much. Lorien I think it's a good idea for you to just hang back. I can maybe pose as the buyer if we can't disguise Ziva... Regardless lets at least try to find this Alonso." He takes one final look around the tavern, "Are we all settled up here and ready to go?"

"Oy, we been sittin 'ere fer whot seems like ferever! I say we git ta findin dis slaver an take 'is place." With that Tikk hops off his chair and starts doing what he does. Making subtle inquiries, passing coin, etc to find a lead or actually find Alonso.

Lets go with investigation because his Charisma skills suck. [roll0]

Donner rises from his seated position, his heavy frame bolstered by a heavier suit of armor. Still, he gets up without trouble, albeit a bit slowly. "I agree with the half pint. We'll get nowhere sitting around repeating the plan amongst ourselves. He says, his voice somewhat gruff, and speaking slow and methodical, as a hammer striking hot iron.

With a plan in hand, you head out to locate Alonso, the slaver. Asking around the bar, you learn that Alonso Griven is based on a ship named The Guillermo, which is moored on the dock.

Once on the dock, the ship is easy to find. The Guillermo is a large slaver ship with filthy, stained sails and a large, odious hull.

Kalaham laughs at Tikks words. "You don't expect me to go down there and take on the whole ship do you?" He brings his hand up to his chin and begins rubbing it. "No we need to do a little recon. I don't want to create a scene and then tip off the stronghold." He peers out toward the ship looking for anything significant. "Tikk I'll do a survey out here if you want to make your way down and find our target. I trust in your abilities to get on unseen."

Lothlorien nodded with Kalaham's assessment. Her talents were not in sneaking and recon, so she was not yet needed. But she had a feeling her combat abilities would soon be needed, Pelor help them.
