Character wealth total at higher levels

I know in 3.5 there was Wealth By Level and in 5e there isn't.

So my question is what is a fair amount of gold / equipment worth say a lvl 3 would have if theyre are created at that level?

Would say 1k gold be viewed as too much? Not enough? Or what?

Page 38 in the DMG has starting equipment. According to that you start with normal equipment. However, if you want to give something I wouldn't give more than 500gp.
