Episode One: Ain’t That a Kick in the head?

Late August in the city of Las Vegas feels like a spring day in the Sahara. It’s hot, the air is arid, and if it weren’t for misting fans you are pretty sure you would have died of at least one heat stroke already.

And it’s only 8 in the morning!

As you arrive at Heatherton Academy for your first day of the new year, you find yourselves outside the café. As you go about your wait for your morning beverage, whispers and murmurs begin making their way through the crowd. You hear a few of them. Something about someone coming this way, and you crane your neck to see for yourself.

Electric blue hair, done in ringlets, frames a perfect face. Piercing light blue eyes that seem to, when they look your way, cut right through you to your soul. A body that glides with natural grace, even in the heels you hear clicking with every step she takes.

This girl is drop dead gorgeous. And from her jacket insignia, you can see that she is a Freshman.

You have to meet this girl!

Igni looks, and sets her book down quietly in her backpack. She gets up, and starts to approach the other girl, a tentative smile on her face. As she almost reaches her, though, a tall, thickly built sophomore with a black eye steps between Igni and her. "What was that you were reading, nerd?" the boy says.

Um, just Sphere, by Michael Crichton. Can I- she starts.

"Shut up, dweeb!" he says, cutting her off. "I saw you looking at that piece of ass over there! So sit down, shut up, and stay away, or Imma turn you into a red spot on the wall!"

Igni tears up and shirks back a little, but still tries to see if she can at least get a glimpse of the blue-haired girl.

Chastity simply goes about her morning routine. With everyone clamouring to get this new girl’s attention, it would be wise to give her some space. She seemed the type to prefer a bit of space, and Chastity would certainly give it to her.

That said, she would also give new girl a nice view of her curves if they happened to look her way.

As she starts to recover, Sofie feels something poking her in one of her boobs. And if that weren't enough, after a few prods, she feels the same hand squeeze her.

She looks down, and sees a mass of blue hair coming from beneath her chest.

Igni does indeed get a glimpse of her. She even sees her get pulled down to the floor by a girl who appears to be falling down, before she is accosted by her bully. When she manages to gather up enough courage to peek again, she is nowhere to be seen.

With a sigh, Chastity heads over to the commotion, unwrapping a sucker and putting it in her mouth as she does so. ”Hey, something going on here or is everyone just staring at New Girl?” she asks, putting an arm around one of her classmates and pulling them over.

"I don't know", Ulyana smiles shyly, "I didn't meet anyone else... but, I hope it will be?"

Im sure it will be. My parents say this is a great school, and that I should fit right in.

Catherine takes the bottle and takes a decent sized chug from it.

The sweater is probably not helping today.

Im sure it will be. My parents say this is a great school, and that I should fit right in.

"That's good to hear", Ulyana nods with a smile, "Eh, my English isn't too bad, is it?"

People were reluctant to give ground, but finally you managed to clear a small space in the hallway. Whatever you were hoping to achieve from the act doesn’t happen, because as the space opened up, a woman stepped into the gap.

“Alright, everyone,” she says, with more than a little exasperation in her voice. “Time to be moving on to your homerooms. Get going.”

Slowly but surely, the crowd broke apart, leaving only a handful of kids left behind.

“Right. I assume those of you left behind are in my class. Inside, now.”

"I... well, you..." Sofie blusters and stammers a bit before sighing. "Okay, I'm sorry. I tripped and fell into you, but I didn't mean to land on top of ya like... like that." She looks the girl in the eye and sticks out her hand for a handshake. "Name's Sofie, Sofie Aguilen. And you are?"
If the girl has some familiarity with the Las Vegas casinos, she may recognize the Aguilen name as the owner of one of the larger casinos on the Strip, the Pacific Lodestar.

I... I feel uncomfortable without my sweaters on though. Catherine replies.

"Well, maybe try a lighter fabric long sleeve? Something that breathes better, maybe? Anyway, gotta dash," the girl says as she shuts her locker and starts running down the hall. "Homeroom, you know? Keep the water. Stay hydrated!"


"Oh, thanks you... It is not my first language..." Ulyana explains, "I just moved here from Russia..."

Well, it doesn't seem to be a problem for you. But if you do come across anything you don't understand, just ask me, ok?

Seeing the rest of the class hesitating, Ulyana raises her hand. "Allow me, please?"
"My name is Ulyana, and I transferred here from Russia for work."

She seems to be done with the introduction, but some people in the class want to know more, it seems, "You mean your parents work here? What do they do? Tell us something else about yourself!" the questions sound from actross the room.

"N-no, I mean, I work here... after school..." Ulyana replies shyly.

"Wow, you're in the show?! What do you do? Can we see you perform?"

Another barrage of questions sends Ulyana red from blushing. "Eh... I'm not warmed up... well, maybe something simple..." she pulls her shoes off and places her hands on the nearby table - that happens to be Kathryn's.

With one fluid motion, Ulyana goes into a handstand, her uniform skirt falling down to reveal... bicycle shorts, to the disappointment of the good deal of the class. Bending backwards, Ulyana cursl her body in the complete circle, placing her feet on top of her shoulders, and stays like that for several seconds. Then, looking at Kathryn with what seems like a mischievous smile, she blowas a kiss to the audience with her feet.

Chastity gets up, a tootsie pop in her mouth, and makes her way to the front of the classroom. ”Well, I can’t say that I want to be the one to follow up something as interesting as contortionist or being foreign, but...” she takes out the sucker, giving it a quick lick as she does so, and makes direct eye contact with Kathryn, smiling, “I’m Chastity Clarke! I moved here from Henderson over the summer! I look forward to getting to know all of you!” the girl continues, bubbly as ever.

And, as if to make good on that, Chastity begins going down the first line of desks, shaking people’s hands and asking their names. Unfortunately, as soon as she’s about to get to Kathryn, Ms. Tayuchi reminds her that everyone will be making introductions, so there is little need to take the time to say hello to everyone individually. And also to not eat candy in class. “Of course! Sorry! Just excited to meet new people! I’m sure most of the students here know almost everyone else, so I just want to make sure I get to meet people before everyone retreats back to their usual friends!” The keen eyed will notice that while Chastity tosses the stick itself while returning to her desk, the piece of candy itself is strangely absent.

Sofie volunteers to go up near the start, might as well get it over with. She twirls a pencil in one hand, maintaining a bored expression, but keeps looking over at Kathryn's desk.
"Hello, my name's Sofie Aguilen. My goal in life is to work as an astrophysicist. I enjoy card games, soccer, and looking at the night sky... not that I can usually see much here in the city, what with all the light pollution. And, well, public speaking is not the strongest suit in the hand life's dealt me." She inclines her head for a moment and strolls back to her seat.

As Ulyana straightens back up, she casts a glance back to Kathryn, and for just a moment, she is sure that the blue haired girls face is turning a slight shade of pink. There is also a small stream of blood leaking from her noose, but she quickly dabs at it with a handkerchief.

Kathryn seems to look a bit disappointed that she doesn't get to shake Chastity's hand. However, when Chastity manages to return to her seat, she finds a new piece of candy sitting in her chair. Turning the candy over, she sees a ; ) drawn on the wrapper with a neon pink pen.

Kathryn stands up and walks up to the front of the room. Once she is there, she bows.

Greetings. My name is Kathryn King. I was born and raised on Kadena Air Force Base in Japan. I attended both primary school and Junior High schools in Japan. My family recently moved here to Vegas when my father got reassigned back here in the States. So, here I am, and I am excited to be learning with all of you!

Kathryn bows again, and then returns to her seat.

There is a cry from the back of the room again, and this time, you are fairly sure you hear some kind of fluid spraying in the rear of the room, but you can't see anything.

"All right," Ms Tayuchi calls out, as the last introduction is complete. We don't have much time left for homeroom, so why don't you all break into small groups, and talk amongst yourselves for our remaining time.

I do. It was pretty much a requirement, since I attended school off base! Kathryn says with a smile. I made a lot of friends there too. But of course, as a foreigner, I was bound to get a lot of attention. Looks like that’s still the same here.

Igni quietly heads to where Kathryn is, and murmurs a quiet Hi, to her. It's, um, nice to meet you. Right?

A hand grabs Igni by the shoulder, and shoved her aside. “Outta the way, dork! You’re boring the new girl. She don’t care about you or your stupid fantasy garbage! Hey, babe. Names Rocky. Stick with me, and you’ll never have to deal with these losers again.”

There is a flash of motion, a quick series of moves. And suddenly, Rocky is on the floor. Kathryn straightens her uniform, and sits back down.

I am not sure how high school would have been. I was exempted from the entrance exams because we were moving here. But I imagine it would have been mostly the same.

Sugu-chan is my best friend. We grew up together. I’ve known her since I was five. I just hope we don’t grow too far apart before we graduate. We promised each other that we would both attend Tokyo University together....

Before anyone can say anything else to that bold claim, the bell rings, and everyone grabs their things and heads to their next class. As Kathryn grabs her things, you notice a long wooden object looped through the straps.

As Freshmen, you didn’t really get much choice on a lot of your classes for the year. As such, you see a few familiar faces, but not one framed by electric blue hair. But as you turn the corner to the hallway headed toward English I, you hear a familiar voice.

“Yeah. Not so tough when there’s more of us, are you? Now we’ll teach you a lesson, you b****! Get her!”

Four boys look to be attacking Kathryn at the same time.

Igni just gets pushed away, and she feels hands pulling her into the ring surrounding the fight, leaving her little more to do than watch.

Kathryn smiles at the advice, and then, as the remaining boys start closing in, she takes the advice, swinging her stick down low. And then you realize what the thing is. A wooden sword, in the rough shape of a katana. Then you remember her saying she was the captain of the Kendo team.

It isn’t hard to see why. Her form is flawless, flowing from one move to another. She uses the sword to block incoming fists, to ram into the stomach of one of the boys, and she raps another across the skull. Faster than you can even imagine, two of the boys are on the ground.

That leaves Rocky to face Kathryn down. Alone.

But before the epic final showdown can happen, a teacher breaks through the ring.

“Fighting is most certainly against any conceivable set of rules you could apply in a school.” He looks Around, taking in the image before him.

“You,” he says, pointing at Kathryn. “And you.” Rocky this time.

“The two of you as well.” He says, pointing toward Chastity and the boy she was still holding onto.

“And someone help these boys to the nurse’s office. It’s tine for us to pay a visit to the Principal.”

”But she was only defending herself! These jerks started it!” Chastity says, pouting slightly.

Yeah! And they also ganged up on her! Catherine added.

“Who started it is irrelevant. The boys on the floor are injured, and I can certainly tell that it was her that caused the injuries. Self defense is one thing, but using a weapon adds a certain degree to her actions. But I will let the Principal decide her fate. Come along if you wish to defend her, but it means you may share her fate.”

Without throngs of students in the corridors, you reach the Office fairly quickly. There is a pause as you are all given referral forms and asked to fill them out. There are places on the form for your name, your grade, the time, and then a large boxed section where it asks you to detail the event that resulted in the referral.

As you scratch away at the papers, the unconscious boys are laid down in the nurse’s office, and the carriers are asked to fill out referral forms as well.

Once everyone is finished (Rocky seems to have some difficulty with the task) the referrals are taken to the Principal, and the entire crowd of you is left to ponder your fate.

“Stupid b****. Why couldn’t you just taken your beatin’ and then we all coulda just gotten on with our lives.”

Apparently, thinking isn’t much of a strong suit for Rocky.

Because if I let you win, you would wrongly think yourself better than me and my friends.

”Why couldn’t you have left her alone? Are you really so low that you have to beat up a girl to feel powerful? Are you too weak to beat up any of the boys here?” Chastity spits back.

“Nobody f*cks with us,” one of the other boys said. “When we heard that Rocky got creamed, it was our brotherly duty to stand with him and get ‘em back. It don’t matter that it was a girl. Nobody messes with us, or we make ‘em pay.”

"S-so... what will happen now?" Ulyana whispers to whoever happens tobe closest... among the girls, that is, "They won't summon our parents to school, will they?"

I doubt it, we weren't fighting after all. Catherine pointed out.

”When did she beat them up? And why? She doesn’t seem the type to just beat up guys.”

Before anyone can answer, the door leading to the Principal's office opens, and you are gestured one at a time to enter the office and have a seat.

After you are settled, the Principal, a Dr. John Oppenwrun, sits his own slightly pudgy body down behind his desk. By no means is he fat, or comically oversized, just a nice layer of padding on his belly.

Even though you are called in one at a time, he says the same thing to each of you, the same set of questions, the next rattled off almost immediately after you are done speaking.

"So, Miss (inset last name here.), I understand you were involved with the little tussle on the northern end of the school, is that right? And what exactly happened? Why did you involve yourself? Why did you not reach out for faculty? What do you think we should do about this? How do you think we can prevent this sort of thing in the future?"

”Well, I was leaving class when down the hall, I heard something that sounded like an argument,” Chastity says, thinking back. “I thought that it would be a simple thing to break up, but when I got there, several guys looked ready to beat up Kathryn. This fear was confirmed when one of them said... I don’t like using such language... Um, ‘Now we’ll teach you a lesson, you b-word.’ Well, slightly different, but you get the picture,” she continues. “I kinda just went without thinking, and sorta grabbed one of the guys so he couldn’t immediately hurt Kathryn. A couple of us jumped in to protect her. Then she...” of crap, this might make Kathryn look bad... “...she took out a wooden stick, or something like that, and fought off the last person. Then a teacher finally showed up.”

“She looked like she was in danger. I was raised to always aid those in need. ‘Rescue the weak and the needy, save them from the clutches of the wicked,’ and all that.”

A teacher would hear the commotion and come break things up, and I might prevent someone from getting hurt. And lo, that’s what happened.”

See if those boys have a history? They spoke like they weren’t just friends, but sort of that ‘Mess with one of us, mess with all of us’ gang mentality. I don’t know, what do other schools do to prevent this kind of thing? I’m not an expert, and I tend to avoid people who start those kinds of fights.”

I didn't involve myself. I didn't swing a punch in the slightest. I know that zero tolerance is bull****, and thankfully none of them attacked me, or I'd be suspended right about now. Catherine replied crossing her arms.

Suspend zero tolerance. All it does is make the bullies know they can ruin any nerd's prospects by swinging at them, and they'll get suspension. She recommends.

She was planning on using it to demonstrate her kendo skills as she attempted to organize a school team later today. I knew she would be carrying it, and what it could do. Believe me when I say that those boys who attacked her are lucky that they only got what they did."

"Oh, I intend to ask them as well. However, considering that I have some certain... impartial evidence, I am gathering everyone's stories together. I must say," the Principal goes on, "That I am glad to see that your stories match up with each other so well. Considering you must not have had a lot of time to corroborate with each other, I can safely assume you are all telling me the truth, at least as you see it. Now I must see if the boys do as well."

They don't. Rocky and his gang get detention for a week. After he is done with all of you, and dispenses his punishments, he sends you all to lunch, noting that, "Since there is only a few minutes left to the period, you may as well beat the lines to the good food."

"So... that means we're in the clear?" Ulyana asks hopefully, "And... I don't really understand... how is not going to school a punishment? I mean, it's like an extra vacation..."

Kathryn shrugs. Detention for a few days, after school. At least there’s no physical punishment, so it could have been worse.

And the cheerleaders, noticing the sword, start whispering to each other. There is a bit of nudging, a few fingers point none-too-discreetly in her direction, and then one of them gets a small shove in your direction.

"So..." the blonde girl starts. "Is it true that you beat up half the football team?"

The cheerleader gives you an odd look, a look that proclaims you as beneath her and at the same time, affirms pretty much anything you may have ever heard about cheerleaders.

“Like, I doubt you were there. Everyone at school knows that she,” she indicates Kathryn with a finger pointed from a hand flipping at the end of a flexible wrist, “That she single handedly started a fight with the football team, and if it hadn’t been for intervention by Rocky and that teacher, that she would have murdered them.”

She looks over at Kathryn. “What do you have against football players anyway? Like, what. Did they turn you down when you asked them out?”

No. I just don’t like when arrogant pricks think they can bully their way into a girl’s pants.

The cheerleader puts her hands on the table so she can lean down and put her face close to Kathryn's.

With all the hustle and bustle of the day, Ulyana didn't even notice much of the class disappearing after the school ended... and then she realized she had little idea of where to go. Looking around... no, there really was no one in sight. Well, no one she knew; and Ulyana would rather avoid talking to strangers... especially teachers and staff. And then an idea occured: Katherine would be left after classes for her detention, right? So she could just wait for her... and then ask her to show her the way around... Of copurse, the other other option would be to call mom and ask her to pick her up. Of course, that was the last option.
