Chapter 9: Dungeon Master's Workshop (page 263) of the DMG brings some alternative skill systems. I'm thinking of trying the Ability Check Proficiency and the Personality Trait Proficiency variants in my upcoming games. I'm unsure if there will be any unintended consequences by using these system or how they would affect the balance between characters, so I come to the Playground to hear what's your experience with them and if there's anything I should be aware of.

IIRC, all of those were playtested in D&D Next playtests, but were left out from the final PHB, probably due to being less popular based on feedback, but popular enough to be included as variant rules in DMG.

Personally I don't think that there's going to be unintended consequences

Should be fine, just make sure to explain it to your players and keep an eye out for any blatant abuse.

I will check if there's anything interesting on the playtests, thanks.

I think Ability Check Proficiency will be easy to keep track of (even easier than skills). Personality Proficiency might take some extra work though. Thanks for the input.
