View Full Version : You're a Were-What???

Looking at the lycanthrope template, I was thinking about what would be some of the most unusual/strange/hilarious were you could be.

The first that comes to mind is the Were-Donkey, as one of my players said: "You think Bob's bad now, at night he's a real ass!"

What other weres can you come up with?

And a bear that was Were-Human.

I might be wrong, but I believe that the 'were' part means 'man', so a 'were-human' is kind of tautological.

That said, I would like to see a were-mole. Or a were-melon.

Were-Badger dwarf. Pretty sure that actually existed in the Ravenloft setting. And very easy to recreate now, with dire badger being in the MM and all. I suddenly have an urge to play one, if only it weren't for the chorus of 'badgers badgers badgers badgers, mushroom mushroom!' that would inevitably follow.

In 2nd edition, most dragons could not turn into human form; bronzes, silvers, and golds were the only core ones capable of doing so. Also, in the Realms, there was the the Waterdeep dragon, the Steel dragon, and the weredragon (who could only turn into human females).

I actually wrote up rules for being a were-squirrel, for an online forum game I did. It was kind of a silly game. So one of the players got it by eating these cursed acorns, and now every full moon he sprouts fur, grows a massive tail, gets slightly smaller and has a ravenous hunger for nuts.

If I recall correctly, the bonuses were, like... +6 to Dex in hybrid form, +4 to balance checks in all forms, +8 to climb in hybrid or animal. Some puny little claws that did 1d4 damage... and some damage reduction. Because all were-creatures have damage reduction. I forget the level adjustment. And they made you Chaotic Neutral. Were-dolphin and were-seal...which is actually possible by RAW as the only requirement is that a creature be omnivorous or carnivorous. Plus, there is precedence for the were-seal in Eskimo folklore. Though,if you followed the myth exactly except for the normal rules for lycanthropy then this would happen:

Newly-Created Wereseal's Friend: "Bob, why are you hauling that seal skin around? And speaking of which, why does it disappear every full moon? And while we're at it, whats with the new liking for halibut? I thought you hated fish."

Could be funny in fantasy settings...could be even funnier in modern settings. Watch as your adventuring party looks on in amazment as the "human fighter" transforms into a "human fighter who also has an afro", whilst he howls "groooooovy!!!!" towards the moon.

Several of the Were's you guys mentioned had write-ups in the 2nd ed books. I know that there is a were spider, were shark, were badger(always dwarves), and were crocodile. The were dragon isn't really a type of lycanthrope but a specific species of dragon (in the monster description it even says the name is a bit of a misnomer)
on a further note in my campaign I allowed a friend to play halfling were-rat, because i felt it fit better than the standard human (it also made sense campaign wise from were they were and made introducing his character a lot easier)

Were-tree. I'd actually love playing that.

Hm... The only trouble is that you're only inconvenienced once a month. Now, if you were a tree were-human, that'd be something. Kind of like a romantic fairy tale, where the human form takes on a lover, but they can only be together one night each month before he disappears into the woods and becomes a tree again...

-----

...Actually, I've given it more thought, and have determined that a were-tree actually could be fun if you deal with certain creatures. For instance, you could try the druid killer trick: Go full transformation at a location where you believe a druid will make an attack. When the druid Tree Strides into you, shift back. Ouch.

...Say, how would you go about mystically binding a dryad to your tree form, and what effect would that have in your human form? Would she have to remain within 300 yards of you at all times?
