View Full Version : Resilient Sphere: are you not contained?

I decided that is not a simple question for the RAW thread.

Resilient sphere and Bead of Force both say:
"The sphere contains its subject for the spell’s duration."

That means that you cannot teleport out of the sphere or use any type of magic to get out of it? The sphere simply contains its subject(s)?, right, that's a fact?

If it is specifically mentioned that the subject who has failed its save will be, in fact, contained within that sphere, is it not true then that the subject will remain inside and "contained"? Why would any spell make you "un-contained"?

There is no limitation whatsoever on teleportation magic. You can teleport out of otiluke's resilient sphere if you want to.

Why? If the spell says that you are contained then why would you have exceptions?

Because nothing says that the containment is absolute. If I lock you in a jail cell, then you are "contained" within that cell until your sentence is up. You are still, however, fully capable of using whatever means are available to escape before then. This works the same way.

A ceramic jug is a container: doesn't mean it can't be broken or things poured out of it. Stop trying to twist words to have meanings they don't.

Because the sphere spell description makes no mention of dimensional travel. Water in a glass is contained but that doesn't mean there's no way out. If you can't teleport or planeshift, you can't leave the sphere, since it extends into the ethereal as force effects do. You -are- contained. If you want something more absolute you need imprisonment.

Well, technically an epic escape artist check can do it too but that's kinda fringe.

Because there is no mention whatsoever of blocking teleportation. A spell that does that, such as dimensional anchor, has to specify it does so, that's how rules work.
