In 3.5 Core, can you use Alter Self as a humanoid(Elf) to change into a monstrous humanoid, or only to another basic humanoid? I need to figure this out before presenting it to my DM. Chatting casually he said the Alter Self spell can only transform humanoid to humanoid, not to monstrous humanoid. That slightly dampened my enthusiasm for the upcoming spell.
Player's Handbook reads, "You assume the form of a creature of the same type as your normal form (such as humanoid or magical beast)." Though it's monstrous humanoid, it is still fits the humanoid 'type', right?
So, is it possible in 3.5 Core? Or is that only a custom play way? I hope I can be monstrous!!
Thanks!

No.

You can turn into stuff of your type. Monstrous humanoid and humanoid are different types.

here (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/typesSubtypes.htm) is the list of types.

Ah, right on. Thanks. What are the most useful humanoids to turn into? Anyone's favorites?

this (http://minmaxforum.com/index.php?topic=2811.0) should get you started. I'm a fan of constrictor nagas.
