Hi all,

Something is bugging me. Lots of things are bugging me right now, tbh, but thats beside the point (sorry if this comes across as a little snippy; its been a tough week).

Dig back far enough in my post history, and you will see that dragons confuse me. Most of those problems I have gotten over, but one stands out right now.

Polymorph is something that is sort of written into dragons abilities. Its where sorcerers get their power. Its how you get half dragons and dragon-kin. But by my reckoning, dragons cant actually use this, arguably signature ability, until they are at least old. Very old in some cases. Is that right? I supposed they could actually take levels in Sorc, as they gain power through aging, and not leveling, AND they are generally DM tools, not PCs, so you can stack as many levels on them as you want, but I still feel like I am missing something.

Can you guys confirm/deny this?

So your question is if dragons have no native listed ability to polymorph at will, do they have to wait until they are old enough to unlock 4th level slots (assuming they have racial access to sorcerer casting) ?

The answer, which it sounds like you're already pretty clear on, is yes.

I don't quite see why you think polymorphing is a signature ability of dragons. I don't recall anything in the Monster Manual or the Draconomicon suggesting any such link.

Looking at the core True Dragons, bronze dragons get Alternate Form at Young, Gold and Silver get it at Wyrmling. Theoretically, half-bronze, -gold, and -silver should be much more common than half-any other core True Dragons, who can only transform once they ding old enough to get Polymorph through Sorcerer casting.

Of course, given Rule 34 and whatnot, we know that plenty of humans would be willing to bang dragons even in dragon form, so it's not that big an obstacle.

Dont feel like digging thru your post history. I dont find dragons confusing but hey to each their own, I've always been a big fan of dragons.

Dragons dont need polymorph to interbreed, its just a racial thing. Polymorphing does make it easier though.

Yeah without Alternate form or a polymorph spell/scroll etc they would need to wait until theyre old enough or take some Sorc levels (which they can do at any time regardless of age), their racial casting stacks with Sorc levels.

I just hope we're talking talking either smaller dragons or female dragons here because otherwise... :smalleek:

Looking at the range of.. things being sold in specialised stores, then i dont think a dragon being large will be much of an issue..

I dunno. I mean, a 40 foot lizard probably has, like, a 3 foot jiminy, at least. I sure wouldn't want to engage in activities with something the size of my torso.

Polymorph isn't the only way for dragons to take human form.

Silver and gold dragons have alternate form for any humanoid or animal form starting right from the beginning with wyrmling. Bronze dragons do the same starting at young.
