View Full Version : 3d6 straight - What's your character?

For this thread, roll a 3d6 and see what your numbers are. Your numbers all go in order, so you can't, say, roll 9 12 16 14 7 10 and put 16 in Strength, it has to be Con. After rolling, see what kind of character you come up with using the generated numbers.

I rolled 12 11 9 11 15 5. Using these numbers, I would want to be a Death Cleric, acting extremely offputting to others or, if DM permits, is undead, making him also smell horrible. However, he still manages to be a competent priest, so the party puts up with it due to the aid he provides. However, due to his mannerisms, no one would miss him too much if he were to die in some lost catacomb.

Grok is a Half-Orc, the smallest of his clan. He was left to fend for himself as part of his adulthood ceremony, but decided to leave the clan that looked down on him anyway. Eventually he was taken in by some clerics of Helm and became the most devout and evangelical cleric any of the acolytes had seen in quite some time. His evangelical style is quite off putting, especially coming from a Half-orc. And just for fun and because it just came out, he’s an Order Cleric.

Also, he becomes mesmerized with anything that he considers beautiful.

This is... surprisingly hard. Not a bad set at all, especially for 3d6 straight down, but no idea comes quickly.

I'd probably play a young human cleric, who strives to improve himself and help others. Not terribly creative, but pretty fun and solid mechanically, variant human or not.

Let's do one more:

13 6 8 12 15 15

Um... okay then. I'm thinking a friendly, outgoing dwarven paladin (hill dwarf), who's rather clumsy and not tough as he'd like others to think, but he tries to avoid discussions of his toughness by his personality.

Hill Dwarf Forge Cleric with the Clan Crafter Background. Fairly standard dwarf, but with a good reason for leaving his Clan to adventure, that I'm having trouble thinking about right now.

Probably something related to this Bond: I created a great work for someone, and then found them unworthy to receive it. I’m still looking for someone worthy.

This is . . . not optimal. Still, I could imagine playing it. Meet Beans the Hill Dwarf Moon Druid. He’s not big on social graces, and he’s slow and weak, but does any of that really matter when you can turn into a grizzly bear? Not really.

While working on some clockwork mechanisms, a steam bank exploded. With the help of both magical and mundane healing, Makki Tiplex recovered from the incident almost completely. Bits of the copper remained embedded in the tissue, giving her metallic "freckles". The Conclave of Gnomish Society (CoGS) found her guilty of negligence and removed her from her position. As her life spiraled out of control she began to blame the CoGS for her troubles, and eventually decided it was her mission to prove that they were corrupt. Reaching out she eventually started to recruit others like herself, those who were disposed by the CoGs. In time Makki was dubbed the resistances leader, and somehow, someone decided to give their group the moniker "Sprockettes". The Sprockettes are still fighting for their cause, and with her knowledge of steam works, her tinkering toys, and some illicit skills taught to her by others in the resistance, they move.

I'm thinking drow acolyte of Lolth who got tricked into a warlock pact by a devil that's trying to undermine the church. Although she likes having magical powers (since she was never much good at the clerical stuff), she is still loyal to Lolth, so she's decided to look for a way out of the pact - before her patron can use her to cause any more trouble.

My Character is a Firbolg Forge Cleric named Therin Marsh who was exiled from his clan because he preferred fire and metal over the the natural environment his clan hailed from. He's a little too large to be very nimble and tends to just be a towering wall of metal in combat. Surprisingly frail considering his size, which he compensates for with huge amounts of armor and sharp weapons.

Whack enemies to impose disadvantage on their attacks vs anyone but you, Action Surge or reaction attacks (Sentinel helps with this) allows you to also Dodge and self-heal with Dwarven Fortitude (a guaranteed 15 HP per hit die with Durable).

Another decent option would be a Moon Druid with a race that provides a Wis bonus.

Ok, with those stats I think it's best to go all the way and play an extremely old and shriveled Sage, a Rock Gnome Diviner Wizard with a long white beard, thick glasses and a cane he uses for hitting his fellow adventurers if they dare to get clever.

He has spent his life in the library reading about the world and now after surviving all his children, he thinks he should finally have the adventures he always dreamed of.

Slabteeth, the Earth Genasi, was born of basalt columns and bad attitude. He was raised by a particularly grumpy Xorn in a cave system in a dormant volcano, after he was abandoned by both human and dao parentage. The Zealot Barbarian REALLY likes his little patch of land, and does not take kindly to trespassers. He has recently taken up adventuring after a group of ne're-do-wells snuck into his cave, and stole his pile of shiny rocks. He plans to train himself to be the sneakiest sneak-thief that there ever was(Barbarian-Rogue MC), so that he can find those lawless hooligans, and promptly smash their heads in with a rock and/or his fists.

Quite an interesting lineup there. I think I'd like to take advantage of that high con and go dragonborn (for the purpose of building up the DC on my breath weapon), probably blue or bronze because lightning is cool. I'd make the character a barbarian with a shield to up my AC, probably a zealot with the wrinkle of being an almost literally mindless devotee to the relevant deity (hence the low intelligence), someone taken at an early age and mentally broken to become one with no identity or understanding beyond what is strictly necessary for serving his god.

LOL

This is why this method doesn't really work. Good heavens.

I assume we are playing either OD&D or AD&D from whence 3d6 comes from. In those editions these stats aren't that bad, they are just terrible average save for the Wisdom.

In that edition I'd probably play a fighter. No bonuses or penalties to anything important. Straight 1d8 (or 1d10 later) to hit points and I can use all weapons and armor. Due to my fragility I'd probably go heaviest armor, shield, and a longsword if I can help it.

If a DM for 5th edition forced me to play a character with these stats, I'd probably just walk*. D&D 5e requires high stats with bonuses to be effective. Wait...do you need a high stat to cast spells anymore? If not I could probably be a buff machine like a bard or cleric.

*Nah I'd still play. That was hyperbole. :smallwink:

If you watch "D&D One Fighter At A Time" youtube videos by Matt Colville he goes into why 3d6 "straight" didn't really work out and why Gary did it in the first place. Gary wanted D&D to be "realistic" but also understood that D&D characters were supposed to be exceptional and better than normal (which back in OD&D-AD&D was all 9s). This seems contradictory but you gotta realize they were new at this and making it up as it went along.

Gary would later put in a forward to one of the OD&D updates (Greyhawk, I think) that if you didn't roll at least two 15s you should probably allow a re-roll. Later they tried various other methods to get better average numbers.

Well, that's easy. Clearly a frail, reclusive, half-feral Moon Druid. I'll make him a Ghostwise Halfling to round out the picture.

Jian Wu, Outlander Ghostwife Halfling [Moon] Druid
Str 10
Dex 12
Con 5
Int 6
Wis 14
Cha 11
Proficiencies: Stealth, Survival, Athletics, Nature

Wears war-paint but minimal clothing. Rarely speaks to human beings--communicates through simple gestures or just doesn't communicate at all (prone to vanishing without explanation). Basically all of the old cowboy stereotypes about Indians. Because he is so small, he is not very tough except in wildshape (2 HP per level).

I don't want to be a jerk about the loner trope here, but Wu really isn't good with people and isn't very bright, so don't expect him to fight as part of an integrated team. Whistle up a pack of wolves and let them tear your enemies to pieces, sure. Turn into a Giant Owl and strafe your enemies from the sky, sure, he'll do that too. Function as the Mounted Combatant paladin's pet dinosaur while the paladin rides on his back? No, not even if it's optimal. Creating a Spike Growth area for the warlock to repeatedly blast enemies across with Repelling Blast? Not that either. Assume that Jian Wu shares your general goals and motivations but finds your specific actions and plans for the future fairly incomprehensible, and just plans around you.

Connections: Jian Wu considers himself an asi (bodyguard/slave for someone to whom he owes a life-debt) to one of the other PCs. Back at home his brother-in-law was the chief, and Wu has two half-grown children (Jian Ling, a daughter aged 14, and Jian Xu, a son aged 8). His wife Bao Li was eaten by a bulette during a footrace she accepted on a dare. He doesn't talk about any of this but sometimes it makes him sad to think he'll never see them again.

On my first attempt I rolled up something like 15 5 13 9 12 13 Cavalier/Fiendlock, but then I had to reboot my computer and apparently I hadn't hit Submit, so that post got lost.

In addition to Moon Druids, I expect I would generate a lot of fighters, because fighters can be fun even without particularly good stats. All you need to chain mail and some moral grit and you can tank for the rest of your party. Maybe a few Rogues.

I have no idea what I would do with a character who rolls something like 4 7 18 5 9 8. Constitution is in some ways the most boring and useless stat there is. I guess I'd fall back in that case to observing that physical attractiveness is closely correlated with glowing health, and just declare the character a Barbie Doll Forge cleric: Mobile feat and heavy armor speed penalty offset each other, and she can just play support by casting spells like Bless and Revivify as needed.

That’s better. My first instinct is rogue because of the decent Dex, but archery fighter seems like the better option here. The +2 from archery style will bring his offense up to respectable numbers, and his constitution isn’t bad for the role. Eldritch Knight, since he has half-decent intelligence and having a familiar can mitigate his terrible perception, let’s go with Hawk.

This is Mason. After dropping out of the 12th least prestigious wizarding school in the world, he found himself without the money to get home and a long ways away from Brighton. He had some skill with a bow so he hoped answering an adventurer’s wanted poster he found on the door of a tavern will earn him the silver he needs to go home.

V. Human, Sage background, Bard. Linguist Feat at L1 obviously, for the +1 Int and 3 additional languages.
Skills: Arcana, History, Investigation, Nature, Religion and Persuasion.

Although she would be perfectly content to stay inside the confines of her school’s library as she has for the last 50 years, her cleverness, diligence and charm have finally caught up her. She has been (quite reluctantly) selected to represent the Academy at this year’s Conclave to share the new coding system she developed for organizing the archives. She sets out on her month long journey excited to see the people and places she has only read about. The school managed to find a group of intrepid young adventurers heading in that same direction, and promised them a small reward for their allowing her to travel in their company...

Growing up slower and weaker to a poor family you never got a decent education or the ins and out of the world. Being shunned by everyone limited your ability to interact with other people. Animals, both on the farm and wild ones were your escape as they didn't look down on you. Your kinship with them lead to running off to the wilds where you became one with nature, allowing you to transform yourself into great beasts and mold plants and animals to your desire.

Play as a poor social skills wandering hermit who tries to help others using his buffing and healing magic (little point in preparing spells with a save since DC would be terrible) and relying on wildshape in combat.

Hmmm. With stats like those, your family might not just be poor. Might also be the result of generations of inbreeding, which also explains the social isolation.

But then one of your sisternieceaunts spilled the family secret to a visiting cabbage salesman, and the next thing you knew there were armoured men in white cloaks taking screaming children away while your dadgrandpauncle lay motionless on the floor in a pool of spreading blood, and you *ran* into the forest, afraid they would catch you too...

That was ten years ago, and you hadn't spoken to a human being or been fully immersed in water since that day... until today when you met the rest of the PCs. More precisely, when you got caught stealing food from their saddle packs.

Cornelius Budge has seen it all, literally. His mind is continuously swamped with vague visions of possible futures that he must interpret to find the most likely outcome for any given situation. Well into his 70's, he's been doing this for an extraordinarily long time and is still somehow not dead. Cornelius would quite happily give it all up if he could just figure out how to get everyone to leave him alone. He does not suffer fools gladly, which is unfortunate as he tends to view most people he encounters as fools.

He is a Deep Gnome Abjurer Wizard who has been lost in the Underdark for some time now. He can hardly remember how it all began. There was a Drow Elf involved. A Priestess of Lloth she Called herself? Beutyful woman. Gajul followed her and her sister, answering their telepathic calls, and left his job of transmuting that bridge in the midle. He even forgot he had a wife at that moment, the calling was so strong.

The next thing he remembers is waking up, covered in the two Drow elf dead bodies. Something had left him for dead. He had no idea were he was, or how much time had passed. The last time he had a sence of self, he was a yound lad in his 70's, and now he had a long wight beard. Something was calling to his mind again. Something cold, and evil. An Aberant Being. A mass of Tentacles. He told him that he would grand him safe passage from the Illithids, if he would become his champion. He agreed, having heard horrific stories of the Illithid, thus becoming a Warlock of the Old One.

However, this had a cost on his sanity, reflected on his low wisdom. He still tries to go back home, wile every day is more of a challenge, both to survive his predators, as well as his failing sanity that makes him more and more like the creatures he tryes to protect himself from. Will he ever return home?

Moon Druid is a solid class even if you stats completely suck. You spend your spells slots on Goodberry, Barkskin, longstrider, and summons, and you make sure you are always in Wildshape form. It's not ideal, but you don't need any stats for that at all.

16s in both Dex and Int would be a fantastic start that would open up a lot of options and playstyles... if not for that abysmal 7 Con.

The obvious thing to do here would be to make a wizard and try to avoid damage as much as possible by staying in the back, but even then we're not going to be able to avoid damage forever, and the wizard's d6 hit die combined with a -2 Con means a starting total HP of 4, and only 1 additional HP per level. A whopping 23 HP is not going to keep me alive at level 20, no matter how many meatshields I have in the way.

We need something with a higher hit die to offset the terrible Con score. Barbarian is out, as both our Str and Con are lacking. Dex Paladin is out thanks to that 9 in Cha, so that leaves us with Dex Fighter or Ranger to still get at least a d10. We're going to be an archer for certain, once again in order to stay in the back as much as possible, and either one works for that. We have a 13 in Wis, which is... decent, but that beefy 16 Int is really calling for something to be done with it, and an Eldritch Knight's abjuration magic could further help make up for our lacking HP. Fighter it is, then.

So then we come to race. A high elf or forest gnome to further push those 16s in Dex and Int is the obvious way to go, but I actually have another idea: goblin. I still get a +2 in Dex for a beefy starting 18, but I also get a +1 to Con, which bumps that 7 to an 8 and the -2 mod to a still painful, but not as much, -1. Most importantly, however, it gets me Nimble Escape, which will also help immensely with my survivability, especially in those deadly first few levels.

I'm going to want Stealth proficiency to support that bonus action Hide, which isn't on the Fighter skill list, so I'll look to backgrounds. The Criminal and Urchin both offer Stealth, as well as the attractive Thieves' Tools proficiency, so the main thing to choose between here is Deception or Sleight of Hand, and I'm leaning toward the latter. Urchin it is. After that, I'll take Perception and Athletics as my Fighter skills, and choose Defense as my Fighting Style. More AC is always good for this build, and as an EK, I can rely on cantrips over our weapon attacks.

Going by the standard starting equipment, I'll take B (leather armor, longbow, 20 arrows), A (martial weapon and shield), A (light crossbow and 20 bolts), and B (explorer's pack). My martial weapon of choice will be a hand crossbow. I'll sell or trade my longbow and arrows at first opportunity for a melee weapon or two just in case, but until then my primary mode of fighting will be wielding the light crossbow whenever I can take advantage of hiding or staying out of range of melee-only enemies, and wielding the hand crossbow with my shield when I have to stand and fight in the open.

That gives me a character with +6 to Hit, +4 damage, 16/18 AC, 9 HP, and the ability to Hide as a bonus action, at 1st level. When we reach 3rd and take the Eldritch Knight archetype, we'll add Frostbite and Toll the Dead to our repertoire: both cantrips leave no trace back to me, allowing me to use them from hiding without giving away my position, and Frostbite inflicts disadvantage on attack rolls; always good for a build as dependent on not getting hit as this. For spells, I'll take Shield and Absorb Elements (higher AC or resistance to most magical damage on demand? Yes, please), and round it out with Thunderwave for dealing with any hordes that might try to swarm me.

Darvin Mordred was a soldier before the day that would change his life forever. He was selected to participate in a ceremony conducted by the company's War Wizard, and overseen by their Commanding Officer. After the ceremony began, he realized he'd been tricked. The War Wizard put Darvin into an enchanted slumber, and opened a gateway to the Shadowfell above him. Infusing Darvin with the powers of an eldritch entity who resides within the Shadowfell, the War Wizard reawakened him. Darvin was horrified to find his body altered, wisps of shadow constantly streaming off his body. The General informed Darvin that he'd just been promoted: he was to become an assassin who would shape the world, painting history red with the blood of their enemies.

On such a mission, a mysterious stranger appeared to Darvin and informed him that they were the source of his power. They offered him a gift, a token of this bond they shared: a blade unlike any that Darvin had sen before. With that, the entity claimed Darvin as forever their own, and continued to empower him with their eldritch magic as he carried out his orders to pain a new world with blood.

Darvin is a Hexblade Warlock with a Pact of the Blade.

Dexterity : 8 (8+1)
Constitution : 11 (10+1)
Intelligence : 4 (3+1)
Wisdom : 18 (17+1)

Class : Druid

Background : Hermit

The party found Tarzan after being tasked to hunt down a great and magical 'albino ape'. Multiple parties were scouring Chult, hoping to bring him in for gold. Cornered in a cave, the party realized that he wasn't malicious, and instead is just protecting himself. Barely able to string a sentence together, his compatriots know nothing of his past. However, what he lacks in intelligence, he excels in instinct. Many times the party was saved from an ambush or a trap by Tarzan's keen eyes. He could strangely tell a man is lying by his face, without even needing to know the words that are coming out of their mouth. He's lived off the land for so long, that he can track the movements of a snake days after it passed through. Where most Druids trained their lives to learn their spells, his powers come to him naturally. His go to method is to turn into the great beasts he normally hunts and fights using their powers.

Nulkata the Tortle Path of the Ancestral Guardian Barbarian. As Nulkata grew up, his shell was larger than most of his brethren. He couldn't move quickly, nor was he fast to react to new situations. However, due to his oversized shell, he developed strong muscles and constitution. His peers mocked him relentlessly almost from birth causing him to have quite a temper, and to go off into a rage at the smallest slight. Due to this, he often would spend time at home or with the elders studying and learning from their wisdom rather than be around his childhood peers. Those elder taught him about the origins of his race and assisted him in connecting to those lost descendants. Now that he is grown, he is still slow to react to situation and carefully considers his option, but his temper has never gone away and despite training and meditation he will still fly off into a rage at the smallest insult.

This is a super viable character, actually quite powerful.
