Three days ago, the Priests of Sonbahar initiated the annual Carnival of the Dead. For each community member that passed away in the previous year, a child's face was painted ghostly white. It was the duty of the other children in town to run around, asking for tributes of sweets or wine. The children bring their haul back to the church and lay it at the feet of the restless spirits. At the end of the day, several men adorn themselves in a dragon outfit and "attack" the church. The dragon represents Drachala, the Soul Stealer of Yasgaram, who wanders the space between the mortal realms and the heavens above, kidnapping spirits and dragging them to Yasgaland. It is the duty of the current leader of the town to interject himself between the restless spirits and the dragon, then ritually slay the beast, thus allowing the spirits to ascend to the heavens. The candy is then consumed by all of the children, while the wine is enjoyed by the adults. The leader of the town was Lord Konthor don’Wrath, a famous drow sailor and noble, friend of the Queen and Count of Ironmace. He has been the lord of Ironmace since his brother, Rake don'Wrath fell to the Frostrage two years ago. Konthor was a tall, excessively handsome man with purple eyes; silky smooth, ivory white hair; and a perfectly toned physique. He was the most eligible bachelor in all of Ironmace.

The next day was the Holy Day of Autumn, where the town enjoyed a great feast of pork, carrots and ale. At the end of the feast, the current leader of the town - Lord don'Wrath - asked the masses if there was one among them who deemed him or herself more worthy to lead the town through the dark days of winter. A drunken runt sailor by the name of Windcatcher dared challenge the Lord for the position of Leader. This caused quite the stir, since the selection of the town's leader was merely a ceremonial exercise, meant to bind the townsfolk closer together. Rare was the time when someone would actually challenge a leader, let alone a noble leader! Such acts were rare because the challenge forced the sitting leader and the challenger to battle one another in mortal combat; with the winner receiving Sonbahar's blessing to lead the town through the dark days of winter.

The battle for leadership was one of comedy, for the runt was so drunk, she barely knew what was going on. Her size and bulk allowed her to sustain seven grievous stabs from the the drow's rapier. After several minutes of combat, the woman shoved the drow. He slipped on a lose bit of the cobblestone road and fell upon the ground. Striking with great force and fury, the runt slammed her foot down upon the lord's head, turning it to red paste.

The town was shocked, stunned even. Their handsome, ne'er-do-well lord had been brutally murdered by a seemingly random woman - a runt no less - who had merely strolled into town two days prior. Now she was the Leader of Ironmace, meant to guide the town and its people through the violence and depravity of winter. For their part, the Priests of Sonbahar attempted to quell any questions or suspicions, telling everyone that this was SONBAHAR'S WILL made manifest. That this woman, Windcaller, was his appointed champion who would protect Ironmace from all threats, both from within and without. Most agreed with the priests, their faith in the divine guiding them through this troubling event... Still others quietly whispered that they would not be sad is someone slipped the runt a poisoned drink...

The next day was Execution day, a day when the town's dungeon was cleared out and its prisoners either executed (or pardoned). Leader Windcaller, once again drunk, decided to execute all fifteen goblinoid bandits and three human thieves... With a boulder. Thrown down upon the prisoners from the top of Fort Ironmace! Truly a more gruesome sight had not been witnessed. Many townsfolk shielded the eyes and ears of the children, to spare them the sights and sounds of such horrors.

It is a dark and stormy night in Ironmace. Sailors, pirates, brigands and buccaneers have been flooding into town. Winter is coming they say, and the first rule of the sea is - never sail during winter. Rich on the bounty of the previous year's haul, the sailors have come to Ironmace to while away their time and money on alcohol, whores and games of chance. The town's new Leader - Windcaller - has taken to these sailors and their revelry with much gusto. For the most part, the riffraff can be found near the docks, most likely in the Honeydew Swallow Inn. Those who do not wish to partake in such debauchery can be found at either the Crooked Cleaver or the Dragon's Gullet. The former is a deluxe pub made for traveling merchants, nobles and other folk who are accustomed to a certain level of finery not found much elsewhere in Ironmace. The Dragon's Gullet, by contrast, is what you might call a local's tavern. It is not as fancy as the Cleaver, nor as low class as the Swallow. The tavern is run by a drow, who goes by the name of Evandra T'sar. She greets all travelers and locals with a smile and a full mug of ale.

You find yourselves in Dragon's Gullet, or as the locals call it - the Dragon. A pleasant tavern, located near the tower that lends its name to the town. The establishment is busy, currently, as it is supper time. Fish and Cabbage Stew are on the menu. The local brew - Iron Ale - is on tap. It is a husky, full bodied dark ale. For those looking for something a bit more refined, the mistress of the pub is also serving Greenfellow Wine, straight from the Greenfellow farm, located outside Castle Gorn (which, of course, is one of the main fortifications that keeps the Arish (who have occupied Eastfarm) in check).

Under normal circumstances, those who are killed on Execution Day are hanged, with their corpses adorning the ramparts outside Fort Ironmace. With the new Leader's... Unique manner of execution, the corpses of the goblinoids were scooped up and stuffed into burlap sacks, then the sacks were strung up outside the Fort. The wind is howling outside, the sound of wet burlap smacking against stone can easily be heard in the tavern.

Such morbid sounds are easily ignored thanks to the a local a halfling bard named Reifa, who is ad-libbing half-sung tales of Ironmace's new, illustrious leader. The stories started out reasonable but after an hour or two have become quite absurd, with Windcaller smashing dragons and wearing their wings like capes. Most of the townsfolk take it all in stride, comforting themselves with the idea that their new Leader seems excessively strong and brave. Perhaps she will be able to single handedly murder any beast that slips into town during winter...

Lusty bar knaves wander around the crowded pub, topping off drinks and speaking sweet nothings in the ears of weary travelers. Upstairs, the gamblers have congregated, playing games of chance with cards and dice. The halflings run most gambling houses in Redwillow and Redcloud, long ago muscling any competition out. The halfling boss upstairs is a skinny woman with a high pitched voice. Sanika the Red is what everyone calls her, as she is known for her face becoming beat red after just a mug or two of alcohol. She comes from the Cinderflower family. The Cinderflower family was a branch of the crown family who once ruled central Redwillow, before the Empire set foot on the isle. The family's progenitor - Beboth - saved himself from execution by groveling before the Forgefather Emperor and pledging his, and all his descendant's, loyalty to the Empire. The Cinderflowers were barred for ten generations from acquiring positions of political power or importance, be those positions within the Empire or in its various client states. Ever greedy and lustful for power, Beboth and his descendants became the lords of the seedy underbelly in what became Eastwillow. They warred with other gangs and crime bosses, killing and murdering everyone that stood in their way. Today, the Cinderflowers are the undisputed leaders of everything criminal in Redwillow. To have a direct descendant of Beboth here in the building is a great honor, and a sign of the favor that the family placed upon the growing importance of the town as a whole.

The fire in the tavern's hearth is roaring, warming the entire building with ease. It is needed, as the first snow of autumn is expected to arrive in the next few days. As the sun droops beneath the horizon, the air grows chilly, to the point of even being cold. Evandra T'sar is constantly asking her staff to head outside and grab more wood for the fire. The tables nearest the hearth are empty, as the heat is a bit too much to stand for most. The rest of the tables are almost all occupied with happy looking people, chatting among themselves, with many drunkenly laughing at the bard's song.

Elmacar

Elmacar stepped through the doors of the Dragon's Gullet, his oilskin cloak dripping with water from the raging storm. Peeling back the hood, his blazing red hair fell loose and pooled around his mid-back, his green eyes peering out and scanning the room from beneath his bangs. Taking a deep breath, he inhaled the scent of fish and hops, and unfastened the buttons on his cloak. His red and gold silken armor peeked out from beneath, and a black scimitar sat in its scabbard at his waist.

It had been a rather rough journey, particularly with the weather - but now that they were in Ironmace, things would finally be set into motion. It had been a while since he had last been on any real mission, and when Tyrus had approached him again with the offer of a job, he had been all too glad to accept - especially when he had found out the nature of the mission.

See anything interesting? It's rather boring in here.

Elmacar glared into thin air as the weapon at his belt spoke to him mentally.

Hush, Húrcrist. The time for combat will come soon enough. Impatience is not befitting of a blade of your make.

Of course, the blade did bring up one salient point. Turning to the half-elf at his left, Elmacar spoke.

"Any sign of our contact?"

Their contact, of course, was another old acquaintance of his, a drow privateer named Myrisstra. Despite his usual professionalism, Elmacar couldn't help but wonder ever-so-slightly what she'd been up to since he'd seen her last.

Per the Discord, I'm operating under the assumption we aren't disguised at the moment.

Myrisstra

A drow woman in a drow tavern located in a drow city was nothing out of the ordinary, but this one had an expression so haunted it would cause all but the most determined of scamps to pause a moment and reflect on the wisdom of causing a disturbance. She sat alone at a table near a wall, close enough to the roaring fire to justify having shed both coat and cloak, but not so close as to be uncomfortable. Both articles were dumped over the back of a chair, and a large and rather flamboyant dark green hat accented with a white feather rested atop the pile of clothing. A naked rapier lay glinting on the table, point outward and hilt mere inches from the tall mug of ale resting there, the handle of which was grasped by the woman. A half-finished plate of food was thrust to the side, and in its place before her was an open book she seemed to be scribbling occasional notes in, though with apparent half-hearted interest. She frequently looked up and around the room, and her gaze more often than not drifted toward the door.

Myrisstra Zaphrael had dusky skin that bordered on a deep purple, and her face was framed by silky white hair and set with violet eyes. Laugh lines would have put the lie to her doleful mien, but her anguished countenance overrode any impression of carefree cheerfulness one might have sought. She was tall, and had a lithe, athletic build. Those familiar with her would know Myrisstra to be a skilled swordswoman and a fearsome fighter with a penchant for daring and resourcefulness that had enabled her to overcome long odds on more than one occasion. A respected sailor and ship captain having served the interests of both Ironmace and Redwillow, Myrisstra should have no trouble finding recruits to sail with her, save that she lacked that all-important feature any self-respecting pirate captain should own: a ship.

Levi

Besides Elmacar and Tyrus, enters the Dragon's Gullet, Levi, handling a black coat above his head to protect him from the storm outside. It was a difficult journey, but Levi has hopes for this mission. It's been a long time since he got a mission that was handled to him, instead of a mission he started, and to have one given by an old friend increases his hopes for a good mission.

Upon entrance, he puts the coat to his side, revealing his white, straight hair, slightly over his eyes. The coat on his hands drips considerably, even more then regular clothes because of the white fur that adorns it all around, now soaked with the water from the storm. Without his coat, it's difficult to not notice the well defined muscles that Levi acquired over the years. With just a glance, anyone can see that those are not muscles acquired without training. His purple, plain shirt fit him perfectly, accentuating every detail of the muscles of his torso. Around his wrist, embedded in his pale white skin, is a bunch of black lines of varying sizes going up until the middle of his forearm. The beginning of the tattoos cannot be seen, hidden behind his dark, purple gloves.

His purple eyes gaze around the place as everyone gazes back. His beauty and shape could not be overstated, and for a second, a lot of the people at the Dragon stop to look at him before returning to their business. He looks at his coat and sighs, then looking back at Tyrus waiting for a response, tired from the days of travelling.

Dala

In a corner at a small table sits a dwarven woman nursing an almost empty mug of ale. Strangely enough, she scares away every new attempt to refill her drink with a snarl and a wave of her worn but well-maintained waraxe. It is a very unusual sight indeed. Everything about her screams 'ranger', and yet she does not display any official markings, nor does her demeanor fit that of a ranger on duty. Besides, rangers are very rare in Ironmace these days. The occasional mumbling of ...piss on your bloody dawn's light... suggests she's not very rangerly at all. Beside the axe on the table and the chain shirt she's still wearing she has a quiver with her, a shield and a pack full of things.

She doesn't pay the rest of the tavern much mind aside from snarling off the occasional disturbance, but she does look up briefly at the new arrivals in the tavern. And for the first time since she arrived she seems to liven up somewhat. She even gulps down the remainder of her ale after taking a good look at the new arrivals, especially the man with the white hair and the black coat. Seemingly reaching a decision after a while, the dwarf picks up her belongings and gets up from her table, striding over to the man.

"Levi! Izzat you? 'sbeen years." She belches. It's obvious she's only recently begun scaring away refills. "How're y... you doin'?"

"Been on 'ny good'dventures recent... ly?"

Elmacar

Elmacar wrinkled his nose as the drunken dwarf ambled her way over, his face set in a mild expression of disgust at her conduct.

Honestly. I did not come into a bar to be accosted by drunks. ...well, I suppose it comes with the territory, but this soon off the bat?

Wait, what was that last thing he said?

Elmacar turned to Levi. "A friend of yours?"

And is there any way we can get rid of her?

Not that I'll be trying to get rid of Bram OOC, of course, but Elmacar is a bit snooty.

Sanika

One more cloaked figure stormed in the tavern, shoving past the group near the front and making a beeline for the fire. With her, a female snowy owl swooped in after her, spraying more water everywhere as she landed on the figure's shoulder.
The woman removed her hood to reveal herself as a very cross tiefling woman with messy snow-white hair and cool blue skin. "Rain. Couldn't have been snow yet, so it had to be rain." of course, she knew perfectly well the connection between rain and snow, but in her soul, she couldn't help feeling an itch when it rained this close to winter. Wet and alone in a tavern, having to use a fire to get dry.
Not a good sign for her getting more work in this place.

Levi

It wasn't difficult to notice the dwarf running across the busy tavern. Levi was surprised to see yet another old acquaintance in the Dragon's Gullet. "Dala!" He says, in surprise. "How are you doing? It sure has been a while, huh. I'm doing fine, but you seem to be doing even better!" He continues, in a quite sarcastic tone, probably in response to Dala's... State of being.

"I wouldn't say I've been on many adventures as of late, no. Some missions, but nothing worth calling an adventure until now." He looks over to his companions and points to each one of them. "These are Elmacar and Tyrus, friends of mine too. This is Dala, and yes, a friend of mine."

The dwarf snorts. "Ha! Doin'betterhe... he says." She lets out a deep, deep sigh. "I've gone'nd lost m'Nisha and Whiskers' been 'rrested by rangers. 've drowning myzorrows for weeks." She steps closer to Levi and motions for him to come closer so she can whisper something to him.

Interestingly, she sobers up immediately when she's sure the patrons can't hear her. "Here's a tip: The ale's expensive, but they don't bother you as much when they think you're drunk. Think I could tag along with you for a while for old times' sake? I need to get my mind off things without spending a fortune on booze."

Tyrus

The warmth of the tavern was a welcome reprieve from the foul weather, yet Tyrus' foul mood seemed immune to the cheery crackle of the fire. With the Count of Ironmace replaced by a dissolute drunkard, the entire region would be thrown into disarray. What had been a bulwark against Arish aggression was now a gaping wound in the nation's armor, and all thanks to the insipid caterwauling of the Imperial Church. Tyrus had been fantasizing about burning the temple of Sonbahar to the ground for the past hour, and it took a few moments for him to register Elmacar's question.

"She'll be here somewhere, Elm."

Raising his hand, a spark of electricity shot through Tyrus' eyes and the water suffusing the trio's clothing splashed to the floor entirely, leaving them as dry as when they'd departed the mainland. He scanned the room, his eyes eventually settling on the dark corner hiding a familiar hat, but before he could speak they were interrupted by a drunken dwarf. He shared a glance of disapproval with Elmacar, but his face was placid when he addressed Levi.

"If this is indeed a friend of yours, try to quiet them down. We are in friendly territory, but I would not draw more attention than necessary. Our contact is there..."

There was a slight motion of his hand towards Myrisstra.

"Join us once you've calmed the dwarf."

Confident in the brawler's ability, Tyrus stepped away without another word, weaving through the crowd until he'd melted into Myrisstra's shadow. Only to notice the stricken look on her face.

"Myrisstra, fancy running into you here."

He took a seat uninvited.

"Is something the matter?"

Elmacar sighed contentedly in a rare outward expression of vulnerability as Tyrus dried them off, and he nodded his thanks to the sorceror. Following Tyrus, he also took a seat near Myrisstra, sliding out a bar stool and easing himself into it. At Tyrus' greeting, he took stock of her face and frowned with concern.

"It is good to see you against Myrisstra. Did something happen? You look... downcast."

The Drow tensed when Tyrus spoke, and she twitched a finger over to the hilt of her rapier. "Please, won't you sit down?" The woman's sarcasm was just loud enough to hear over the tavern's din. "Wrong?" she asked, and barked a bitter laugh. "Ha! Whatever could be wrong?" Myrisstra leaned forward and flicked her violet eyes between the two men. "I don't suppose you've heard anything recent regarding the whereabouts of one Veldrin Melath, have you?"

The door to the tavern opens, the loud hissing wind sails inside, sending a quite chill across the establishment. A man clad in a rain soaked cloak saunters in. He is old, walking with a gnarled cane. He hobbles over to the hearth. Shedding his cloak, he carelessly drops it on the floor. He has purple-black skin, marking him as a drow... Except, he has a long, unkempt beard. Perhaps he is a half-drow? The man pulls a comfortable chair up to the hearth. The old man sits down. The raw heat of the fire seems to put him at ease.

One of the bar knaves wanders up and asks the man if he wants a drink. The elderly chap asks for a stein of Lichen Brandy, a traditional alcoholic beverage in the Underland city of Kesydh. The waiter seems a bit shocked and replies that it will cost a fair amount of silver. The bearded man shoos the knave away with a wave of his hand, telling him to, "Mind his sass around the elderly."

Elmacar momentarily raised an eyebrow at the arrival of the elderly man, but then promptly proceeded to ignore him and turned his gaze back to Myrri.

"I regret that I have not, unfortunately. But perhaps, if everything works out with our mission," he caught Tyrus' gaze, "We can help each other out. Speaking of which, I believe I shall let Tyrus debrief you, but the long and short of it is, we are in need of your knowledge; the lay of the land, as it were."

Settling back in his chair as Elmacar answered the preliminaries, Tyrus picked up where his companion left off.

"Yes, unfortunately we are late of Heerio, and have yet to get a lay of the land. Elm speaks the truth, the Empire has need of your services."

He leaned closer.

"But first I'd like to know why this Veldrin Melath is of such interest to you."

"I am searching for Melath," she replied, "because I am going to kill him." The Drow woman's eyes flashed in anger and sadness. "He took that which I value most, and I aim to retrieve her. And make him pay for his betrayal." Myrisstra took a sip from her drink. "You say you need me? And that it involves service to the Empire. That is well; the Empire has done well enough by me and mine. This, then, is my price: I will help you with whatever it is you're after, and in return, you help me track down Veldrin Melath, extract the information I need, and end his miserable existence. Oh, and an even share of whatever is recovered in pursuit of our soon-to-be-shared goals, which are...what, exactly?"

Dala

As Levi's friends move on to their contact, Dala takes a moment to chat with her old comrade to talk about the old days, and to keep the ruse of drunkenness up for a little while longer. She abruptly ceases talking when she spots Sanika sitting down near the fire. The dwarf looks at Levi. "Could you ask your friends if you're hiring more adventurers for me? As I said, I really need the distraction." She turns her attention back to the tiefling near the fire. "There's something I need to do first, though..."

Dala walks over to the white-haired woman, seemingly no longer drunk. At all. Must be a dwarven thing. When she gets closer, she hesitates for a moment, bowing before before speaking up. "Uh... hello miss. Can I ask you something? I couldn't help but notice... uh... I don't suppose the name Nisha means anything to you?" She smiles nervously. "Oh, I'm Dala, by the way."

Elmacar gestured toward Levi - who, he noticed with a quirk of an eyebrow, was now over at the fireplace with the dwarf talking to a woman in witch's garb. He then scratched his chin.

"Veldrin... Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't he one of the mates on the ship you were serving on a few years ago, when we saw each other last?"

Levi is surprised about Dala's act, but shocked regarding the news she brought. She "lost" Nisha? Whiskers has been arrested? Levi sympathized with her struggle, since he had once fought alongside them before. However, it's clear that Dala does not need someone asking what happened to them right now. During his conversation, he avoids the subject as much as possible, asking vague questions about her and chit-chatting. When she brings up his group again, he decides to try and help her. "I'll try my best to convince them to bring you along." They quickly go each their own way, as Levi goes back to his original group.

He makes his way to the table, followed by Elm's glance, his cloak, now dry, still on his hands. He puts it behind an empty chair. "I'm sorry for the tardiness." He sits down, then looks at the drow woman with a composed expression. "I suppose you're Myrisstra. I'm Levi, and I'm working with Tyrus and Elmacar. Pleased to meet you." He bows slightly to greet the drow.

Myrisstra

A shadow of pain flickered across Myrisstra's face as Elmacar recounted his knowledge of Veldrin. "Mate indeed. Formerly second mate, and then my own first. In the carnal sense as well, if you catch my drift." The Drow scowled. "Bah! I despise the airing of dirty laundry - particularly my own - but you will need to know if we work together, and you're bound to find out anyway with the way rumors fly in this town." She spared a dark look for the clientele of the tavern before returning her attention to Elmacar. "Veldrin was my lover. We had a child he did not want, and he scorned me for my interest in my little Sasre. He became envious when I was promoted first mate over him, and it only became worse when Captain Vrinn retired and left the captaincy to me."

She shook her head and cast her gaze down at the table. "I should have removed him from the first, but sentimentality is a powerful thing. He repaid my restraint with betrayal, taking the first opportunity to lead a mutiny, marooned me on a beach, and kidnapped my daughter from this very tavern. He seems to have vanished without a trace as well. I've been searching for over two weeks, and without a single lead. I do not believe his is black-hearted enough to...to kill his own child, but he would take delight in denying her to me. Or turning her against me. I fear for her well-being, though. Veldrin doesn't know how to care for an eight-year-old."

"Neither do I," she added with a sigh. "That's why she stayed here with Elvandra. The poor woman was almost killed protecting my daughter. That's a blood debt I aim to pay."

Myrisstra then glanced at Levi as he introduced himself. "And I suppose you're the muscle? Or are you just along to look pretty?" Her reply was threaded with sarcasm, though she did wonder what the unfamiliar man offered by way of skill or ability.

"As fair as I'm concerned, I'm always looking pretty." The man shrugs, before looking at the drow in the eyes again with confidence. "But that's not what I'm here for. Yes, I'm the muscles." He looks at Elmacar. "One of the muscles."

Sanika

As the dwarven woman approached Sanika tensed inwardly. The problem with traveling under an assumed name was you couldn't control who recognized you. The last thing she needed now was to be revealed as a former cultist.

Fortunately, the name that came out of the woman -Dala's mouth was one that didn't mean anything to her, and Sanika relaxed."Should it mean anything to me?" Her mouth curved into a half smile."If I was a man, I'd be wondering if there was a forgotten lover and a child with my skin and hair in the offing."

Elmacar was not and never had been a sentimental man, by any means, but if there was one thing the magus could be said to abhor, it was treason. As Myrisstra weaved her tale, a frown crossed his face, and he drummed his fingers.

"Well, I cannot speak for Tyrus or Levi, but I would be more than happy to pitch in and assist you in your hunt, once this is over. We can't have people thinking betrayal is an alright thing, now, can we?"

He looked to Levi. "Speaking of whom, good of you to join us after that... diversion."

A middle-aged drow strolls down the staircase. In his hand is a boot that jingles softly with each step. The man walks over to the bar. He drops the boot on the counter with a loud thud. "I'll have two bottles of your fanciest, most expensive wine. No need to dirty a glass. Just leave the bottles."

The barkeep pulls down two dusty bottles, "Roaring Dragon, from thirteen years ago. These were some of the first wines bottled after the Gloom. Doesn't taste very good going down but... Has a decidedly pleasant aftertaste. Bottled in Blackvale, from a farm outside Blacklake. The name is a bit inappropriate, given recent events... Still, it is the most expensive wine in the building."

"Perfect." The man pours a handful of coins out of the boot to pay the woman.

The breath hissed from between Tyrus' teeth as Myrisstra revealed the depth of her woe, his fingers twitching for a moment as if to take the woman's hand. At the last, however, he restrained himself. Nodding to Levi as the man sat at the table, Tyrus leaned close and motioned for the others to do the same.

"My time is not my own, Myr, but if I can help you I will. As to why we're here, Elm has been mislead by my foul mood. Much as I would like to pluck the festering boil that now occupies the Count's seat, and much as I may suspect some greater design in her ascension, we are after a different target."

He coughed, taking a moment to ensure his voice was lost in the din.

"Deepoath has dispatched a new ambassador to Redwillow. While that is of no real concern, we suspect he is in fact an assassin with designs on the royal family. His ship, the Goldcastle, is in port while the man himself rests at the Crooked Cleaver. Our mission is to infiltrate the ship, acquire proof of his intent, and eliminate him and the entirety of his entourage."

"If I was a man, I'd be wondering if there was a forgotten lover and a child with my skin and hair in the offing."

Dala laughs, then shakes her head. "Nope, I don't recall any drunken trysts with a white-haired woman. Also, that's definitely impossible." Her expression turns serious again. There is a hint of melancholy in her voice.

"No, it's... She was a good friend of mine. Something about you reminded me of her." She sighs. "I was hoping for a long-lost relative, maybe an old friend of hers." The dwarf shakes her head. "Apologies for bothering you, miss."

The half elf frowned at Myrisstra's question.

"The crew are expendable. We cannot allow them to destroy whatever evidence is hidden aboard their ship, and we cannot allow them to implicate Redwillow in the assassination. Beyond that, their lives are of no interest to me."

Elmacar listened carefully as Tyrus outlined the situation to Myrisstra, paying careful attention this time.

Clearly, eating jerky during the initial debrief was not a good idea. Either that or some memories got crossed.

As Myri stated her desire for the ship, he frowned.

"Taking over a ship with a mere four people will be almost obscenely difficult, though, and it's not as if more manpower is just going to fall into our lap. I don't disagree that having such a ship would be a boon, mind, but the mission must come first."

"You might be surprised just how many jump at the chance of serving aboard a ship," the Drow explained, raising her chin slightly. "But very well. Business before pleasure." "Oh." Well, what else was there to say to that. Condolences seemed wrong for someone you just met speaking of someone you had never met. "Yes... Oh, but that's not what reminded me of her. Something about the way you walked in, I guess." The dwarf takes a moment to gather her thoughts. Should she really tell a complete stranger everything about Nisha? "I... our story is a long one. The short version is that she, my brother and myself travelled together for a long time."

"We were brutally separated not too long ago. It's just me now." Dala looks like she's on the verge of tears. Almost inaudibly she mutters: "She was my witch."

After a short moment she straightens up, and takes a deep breath. "Sorry. It's a difficult thing to remember. The trauma is still fresh."

Dala's eyes go wide in surprise when she figures out that Sanika must also be a witch. She quickly catches herself doing so though, and the dwarf blinks a few times before trying to return her expression to normal. "Oh! Well, that does make sense. Well met, Snowy. I'm Dala." Dala bows with a smile.

She's almost forgotten about meeting Levi a few minutes ago. Still, some sounds prompt her to look over her shoulder, and she spies Levi talking to his companions and someone else as well. Dala sighs as she turns back to Sanika. "Will you be here for longer, miss? I'd really love to stay and chat a bit more but an old friend of mine may have an offer for an adventuring job on the table. And since I'm currently without companions I'd really like to see if it's legitimate before they depart without me." She motions over to Levi and the others.

"Or, y'know, if you don't mind me being forward... You could come along. Perhaps the offer extends to others as well. In my experience it's always good to have some extra magic in a group." Dala grins and winks. "And if my senses do not betray me you're very magical indeed."

Dala waits for Sanika to answer before turning around and walking over to Myrisstra's table. She takes a bow before introducing herself. "I am Dala. And this is... uh... I'll let her introduce herself." She nods towards Sanika. "I understood from my friend Levi here you're on the look for some muscle? I'm a former ranger with a sharp eye, a deadly bow and a heavy axe, who is currently without travelling companions." Turning to Tyrus and Elmacar, Dala apologizes: "I'm sorry about causing a fuss earlier. I've been trying to keep the knaves from constantly bothering me with more ale. They were trying to get me to drink myself under the table, and for a dwarf to do that costs a small fortune. Faking it kept them off my back." She pauses for a moment. "If you are indeed looking for muscle, I'd like to offer my services as an archer and tracker."

Although he is happy to see that she has other friends, it worries him that maybe she being a tiefling would bring up some bad memories, and that she would use another tiefling as some kind of coping mechanism to what happened. However, it's best not to worry about that right now. "As I was saying, I've fought alongside Dala for quite some time before. I can attest for her skills." "Redwillow cannot be implicated in the seizure of an Oathic ship. We already approach the edge of our shadow game with the death of the assassin."

His finger halted with a final strike.

"But if Ironmace were to seize the ship, Deepoath may demand reparations from the new Count. The answer would be...enlightening."

He smiled.

"The ship is yours. I-"

The revelation of their true mission had provoked a sudden stillness in Tyrus. While it seemed harmless enough, those that knew him would have been alert for the sudden ionizing in the air, the faint prick of static along their arms. He was prepared to kill the pair before him, if they gave the wrong answer. But as they declared their willingness to kill if it were for queen and country, he relaxed.

"I suppose you have a job. I can offer you 100 crowns, in addition to whatever we liberate along the way. Our first order of business is to acquire lodgings, and from there to scout the target's ship. I have disguises for each of you - blame for this mission cannot fall on Redwillow, but Redwillow cannot be held accountable for the acts of rogue drow pirates."

With six people on hand, we might just be able to pull this off.

Extending his hand to Dala and Sanika each in turn, he then turned back to the others.

"So, now that we're all caught up, there remains only one final question. Your knowledge of the lay of the land will come into play here, Myrri. When, and how, do we board the Goldcastle? Disguise and bluff our way through, or try to avoid notice entirely?"

And sorry 'about the mess." The room she showed them was austere. There was a hastily-made bed, a desk that held some writing supplies, a washstand with a washbasin, pitcher and a small assortment of toiletries, and two chairs. Myrisstra closed and locked the door behind the last of her guests, and stuffed the bed's pillow down at the crack under the door before sitting upon one corner of the bed.

"So..." she said, "We could pose as members of this new thieves guild that moved in recently. They're called the Widows from the Forest and originally come from Redwillow proper. They've been targeting nobles, the wealthy, even merchants. Old Lord don'Wrath wasn't keen on their presence. No idea what this new Windcatcher person's going to do about 'em. Problem with my plan? "I do like your plan, Myrri, at least as a start, but if I may interject, I would propose a few modifications. While we are moving about the docks, our best bet is to use these hats, generously provided by Tyrus -" Elmacar gently shook his own, "To disguise ourselves as guards. Hopefully, since most of the others have been called over to the other side of town, we should be able to leverage their perceived authority to move in close to the ship with relative impunity. Then, once we get near the ship, we disguise ourselves as sailors and sneak aboard - obviously, we won't hold much against close scrutiny, but hopefully if someone spots us out of the corners of their eye they won't immediately cotton on. I do agree with one key aspect: If we are spotted, we should claim to be from the Widows of the Forest. They will make a nice target to blame - their choice of target fits ours, and it will deflect attention away from the crown. While it does carry the risk of them targeting us, it beats the alternative."

Ascending to Myrisstra's room, Tyrus took a seat at the desk without waiting for an invitation. Reaching into his cloak, he pulled free five tightly-wrapped crimson bundles, passing them to each other member of the conspiracy in turn. A flick of the wrist was enough to loosen the bound cloth, revealing a collection of red berets.

"You both present good options, but remember that our target is not aboard ship. What we seek there is evidence of his intent against the state - it is not the policy of Redwillow to murder ambassadors without firm justification. This thieves' guild seems an excellent patsy should our activities draw undue attention. As to their reprisals, I do not intend to linger in this city once our work is done."

Under cover of darkness, and the howling wind, the newly formed band of adventurers make their way from the warmth of the inn and head across town to the docks. The docks are stuffed with ships of all sizes and makes. Many pirates, brigands and merchants have dropped anchor here in town, for fear of the coming winter - and the potential storm that is blowing in from the west. It is late in the evening, the sun already retreated past the horizon many hours ago. A handful of sailors drunkenly meander the streets, joking about the good times that had over the summer and autumn. A few town guards can also be seen. They are despondent and in a foul mood. As you pass one darkened street alley, you see a guard relentlessly taking his frustration out on a drunken sailor. Whacking him over, and over, and over again with a billy club. As you pass, he stares at you with blood crazed eyes that tell you to walk away - quickly - or else you will be next. Once near the docks, the adventurers easily spot the the Goldcastle , for it is an ornate cog, painted bright yellow and orange, the colors of Deepoath. The ship is of an older design, which makes sense given that the Oathers are not known for sea-based travel. Still, the ship has been fortified and suitably armed so as to ward off all but the most determined pirates. From your vantage point, there are but three Oathic guards standing atop the ship, each with a torch. They are dwarves, wearing studded leather armor and each armed with a crossbow and a double-headed axe.

Still, his eyes and skins are now those of a drow, and he changed his hair style and length to be a bit longer on his back and to not cover his eyes. Without saying a word, he nods and proceeds with the plan.

I'm pretty sure my job here is to just go around and "actually" look for contraband while the bluffers find the information we need, right? Or are we searching for something too? I left it very "abstract" because I don't want to mess up lmao

Dala

The drow ranger (who is actually a dwarf. A dwow? A drorf?) looks quite out of place between the tall real drow. Even if Dala is a good foot taller than usual now, she's still very short. Her stocky build is quite well-hidden, though, and she tries to look as inconspicuous as possible.

She simply nods at Myrisstra's orders and begins conducting a mock search, keeping one eye on Sanika and half an eye on the others as she does so.

We could probably find the information ourselves, but since the bluffers are the ones in charge of getting the guards off our backs, it probably will be best to let them do the heavy lifting while we "actually" look for contraband, yes.

The dwarves are initially taken aback by the sudden appearance of the "guards". They immediately bar tentry up the gang plank to the ship. One of their number also starts yelling for the First Mate.

After a fashion a well dressed sailor saunters up on board. He is a human with a thick, long red-blond beard. He is missing an eye, he does not hide the loss behind an eye patch. The gnarled wound is disturbing (to say the least). His voice is higher pitched than you would have imagined but still commands an air of authority. "Who are ye? Why are ye disturbing me at this late hour? Can't you see I was sleeping? This here is the property of the Kingdom of Deepoath. We do not need to let any of you lot on board." He paces back and forth, groggily yawning and rubbing his bad eye with the side of his index finger. "Oooooh. I get it. You lot are from the new little Leader you let take control over the port, am I right? She's probably throwing her new found authority around... Trying to make a name for herself. Just like a runt like her to think she can get the best of us Oathers. Wasn't good enough that you lot barely beat us in the war, now you have to search our ships too!?"

He sizes Tyrus up and down. Fine. Fine. We don't need to involve our superiors. Two of you can come on board (even if it is highly irregular). Two of my men will escort them down to the hold. Show them we mean nothing but peace."

Dala

Dala looks at her 'superiors' hesitantly. Splitting up the group already would be a very bad idea. She's not about to volunteer to head onto the ship as there's no way she can bluff her way out of a situation if things get out of control. Unless Sanika volunteers first, of course.

Tyrus

Motioning for Myrisstra to follow, Tyrus ascended the gangplank until he could look the first mate in the eye.

"Look, friend, we can have this pissing match if you want. I understand, foreign port, winter coming in, you need to put on a brave face for your crew and your superiors. But I have my orders too. So we could go send runners to wake up our respective bosses, drag them out of their warm beds, and endure this weather until they hash things out or you can let my squad aboard, we can get this done quickly, and we can all enjoy an early night. Come on, I'm sure your captain would appreciate having a grateful guard in the harbor."

The grizzled First Mate smiles as he says, "Fine. Fine. Come aboard and look around." He then walks straight up to Tyrus and shakes the man's hand. "Of course, of course. We are friends now. Some would even say allies now what with Araland on the ascendancy. Let this be the first gesture of friendship between our realms.

The First Mate inches closer and deposits a heavy leather sack full of coins into Tyrus' hand. He whispers, "Make this go quickly. In and out. I want you off my ship as soon as possible."

Elmacar

Elmacar relaxed slightly as the first mate appeared to finally concede Tyrus and Myrisstra entry, but did not let his guard down fully.

They've done the hardest part, for now. But they'll need to move quickly in order to get what we're looking for. Hopefully they can do so without arousing suspicion.

Myrisstra

"All right, guardsmen, you heard the man. Let's get to it. And no roughing up the sailors or damaging of goods or the cost comes out of your pocket!" Myrisstra mock-glared at the "guards" who were assembled to "inspect" the cargo. "We want these fine folks to feel welcome in our port. After all, it is their custom that pays our wages in the end."

The First Mate leads the party down below deck. The ship is simple but utilitarian. "Ah, she may be old but she sure hauls a lot." The hold has five stacks of three crates, lashed together and battened down with a net. "In there are the gifts to the nobles of your court. Fine Oathic Ale. The man smiles, as if wishing he could crack open a bottle right now. From what you recall, Oathic Ale tastes like sea water mixed with spoiled cucumbers. The dwarves say it is an acquired taste. You know it to be a taste few ever bother to acquire. There are other crates and boxes down in the hold. Most are labeled as "arms and equipment." Most likely these boxes are filled with fine Oathic weapons. Unlike their ale, the dwarves' weapons are first rate, often prized by men-at-arms for their simplicity of design and high quality craftsmanship. These would definitely go a long way to improving relations between the two realms. At the aft of the hold is a room, closed off and locked behind a thick door.

Giving the hold a cursory glance, Tyrus caught Elmacar and Levi's gaze. His eye flicked towards the first mate, and his expression shifted into a well-worn signal.

Elamacar

Elmacar blinked a couple of times in response, then turned back to the first mate, gesturing toward a random crate of wepons.

"Well, then, let's get on the road here. Would you mind helping us open a crate or two, here? The sooner we're done the sooner we're out of your hair."

Entirely roleplay-based persuasion, here, since I have literally no charisma.

Levi starts moving towards the crates, nodding in agreement with Elmacar, but glancing at the first mate. "We just need to make sure of a few things. This will be done quickly, but quicker if you're willing to lend a hand."

Seeing the First Mate turn his back, Tyrus began whispering the words to a spell. Threads of silver light began to web through his fingers, only to evaporate into stardust that spun towards the unwitting sailor.

Breathing a sigh of relief as he felt his spell take hold, Tyrus marched imperiously up to Elmacar.

"Careful, you lout! Damage my friend's goods again and I'll see you whipped bloody in the parade yard!"

He placed a hand cordially on the First Mate's shoulder.

"I'm very sorry, normally my men are reliable, but this lot..."

Tyrus rolled his eyes theatrically.

"At least they're too dim to question orders. Speaking of which..."

A pull of his arm lead the First Mate into a more private corner where they could whisper conspiratorially.

"You know I have to look into the sealed hold, just so this lot will back me up when I say I did. Of course, you and I both know I'll be blind as a bat in there."

A wink cemented his good intentions.

"The man sighs, "Fine. Fine. Go... Be as blind as you can."

Inside you find a small make-shift office, replete with a desk, a chest and some boxes. Atop the desk are several parchments and scrolls, along with a fancy quill. You note that the ink well does not have black ink in it, but rather gold ink. The chest is clasped shut with a sturdy lock. The two boxes are about a foot long and two feet high. Both have lids that are shut but unlocked.

"Good!" whispered the Drow pirate. "Now that that's done, let's find what we're looking for quickly, and get going."

Nodding towards his female companion, Tyrus whispered into the hold.

"Any of you unsuited to investigation or magic, ensure we are not disturbed. The rest, inside! We should not tarry."

Tyrus will sweep the secret hold with Detect Magic. If anyone has the ability to search for traps, they should do that before Myrisstra attempt to lockpick.
