The Mod Wonder: Since Rooster started this thread, I'm going to piggyback on his post to lay out some guidelines.

This is a post for Free Stuff from various gaming-related places. Steam, GOG, Drivethru RPG, and the like. Try to let us know when it starts and when it ends, and don't use it for advertising things that aren't 100% free. For example, as I write this, if you buy Battletech from GOG, you get Shadowrun Returns for free... that doesn't qualify, because it's "Spend $40 and we'll give you something". Only 100% free things.

Also, if you are posting a free thing, don't worry about Double Posting. If you're commenting on a free thing, that's separate.

If it turns out we need more rules than that, I'll make a note in the thread and edit this post, too.

So I don’t know if this is a good idea or not, but I thought it might be nice to have one thread to... not really discuss, but talk about, whatever, the various giveaways that occasionally happen on Steam and Humble and whatnot. I don’t like missing out on free stuff, and I’m guessing nobody else does either. So if you see something being given away for free, why not post about it here and let everyone know?

F1 2015 is free on Steam until Saturday, if you’re into that kind of thing. It has to do with... cars? I think?

It mainly depends on how frequently free things on normally large stores come out that aren't always free. If there's a dry spell of this, it'll probably get buried.

I poked my head in - the game appears to be free, but you have to actually install it, manually grab the DLC immediately, and only then have it. It's also multiplayer only, so it looks like they're trying to seed servers a bit or similar.

Man, I wish my friends were into Guns of Icarus (and my computer could run it better). Multiplayer derigible dog-fighting, where people can adopt different roles. Your pilot was the best man for flying the ship, but could fire the guns or make repairs in a pinch. The Engineer was the best at maintaining structural integrity, and the gunner got the most out of the weapons.

Biggest drawback is that the game wasn't new player friendly, as it was strictly random matchmaking, and most of the opponents have been dedicated to the game for awhile.

It's also free on Humble Bundle ATM, though I'm hesitant to recommend it; buying Starter Edition Ubisoft games permanently ****s you. It takes longer to unlock anything and it's impossible to pay later to upgrade to the full version of the game. You're stuck.

I was able to download one without having paid this month's fee, but I'm not sure if that option would be available to anyone that hasn't ever paid for at least one month. That said, I think it more likely you need an account with Humble, and I do believe that is free.

Actually no - there was a whole host of games that were free if you were subscribed to he monthly package, but those 9 games specifically were free with only a Humble account (I snagged the couple that I was interested in and I've never been subscribed).

I do admit it wasn't very clear - there was a slight difference in the banner at the bottom of the game picture.

As far as I know, it is a Steam competitor, so you get the game for free, just like in similar Steam promotions. Fairly standard way to break into a market.

I did check it out, but the website is too god-awful to use, even with the allure of free games. Still, since deuterio12 didn't link it, you can find the place here (https://www.epicgames.com/store/en-US/).

The website doesn't seem bad? Not really sure what you mean.

I'd like to filter games that are RPGs. I'd like to see them by date of release. I'd like to see which games work on mac. I'd like the games in a list that shows, say, 20 a time in the screen rather than 3. I'd like a description of the game, at least.

I can do none of those things, that I can see. Instead, I'm forced to scroll through massive pictures of games that tells me nothing about the game unless I already know what the game is. It's aggressively non-functional - i.e. not only does it not do any of the above, it has been carefully designed to ensure it does none of the above.

So, Subnautica is now officially free on the Epic launcher for the next two weeks. However, there's one thing that is worthy of mention...

On that store purchase screen... no, it doesn't ask for CC info since it is free, but that big huge paragraph with a check-box? That's an opt OUT to be spammed by Epic, not an opt IN. So if you don't want to be spammed, you need to check that box.

Also, once installed through the launcher, you can run it independently via the executable, so launcher is not mandatory for play post-install. I would assume, however, that it would be needed for updates.

Not sure if they count since they're not free to keep, but the Endless series (Endless Space, Dungeon of the Endless, and Endless Legend) are on a free weekend. You’ve been abducted from your cozy existence and added into an alien landscape with pieces of Earth from unexpected times and places.

The strange worlds of Obduction reveal their secrets only as you explore, discover, coax, and consider their clues. As you bask in the otherworldly beauty and explore the enigmatic landscapes, remember that the choices you make will have substantial consequences. This is your story now.

Probably more of column B. They have to do something to be competitive against Steam. People won't change unless there's a reason to, and, well, Steam is a thing because there's profit in allowing people to be comfortable and lazy.

Steam lets people be lazy, and you're trying to convince people to put in work so that they can be lazy on your system instead. There's gotta be a good incentive for it.

People are so vehemently against it, though, that a few months back, someone threatened the Borderlands 3 lead designer just because it's being initially released on Epic. People are willing to go far to maintain their comfort levels.

Bullet, Guns, & Puns

Enter the Gungeon is a bullet hell dungeon crawler following a band of misfits seeking to shoot, loot, dodge roll and table-flip their way to personal absolution by reaching the legendary Gungeon’s ultimate treasure: the gun that can kill the past. Select a hero (or team up in co-op) and battle your way to the bottom of the Gungeon by surviving a challenging and evolving series of floors filled with the dangerously adorable Gundead and fearsome Gungeon bosses armed to the teeth. Gather precious loot, discover hidden secrets, and chat with opportunistic merchants and shopkeepers to purchase powerful items to gain an edge.

And on GOG: Toonstruck (1996)

Drew Blanc is a cartoon animator and the original creator of the Fluffy Fluffy Bun Bun Show.. Drew's boss, Sam Schmaltz (played by Ben Stein), sets him the task of designing more bunnies to co-star in the Fluffy Fluffy Bun Bun Show by the next morning. However, the depressed animator soon nods off, suffering from acute artist's block. He wakes early the next morning to inexplicably find his television switched on, announcing the Fluffy Fluffy Bun Bun Show. Suddenly, Drew is mysteriously drawn into the television screen and transported to an idyllic two-dimensional cartoon world populated by his own creations, among many other cartoon characters.

To get home, you'll need to unravel the secrets of these loony lands before they unravel you permanently. Outsmart demented clowns, shock the socks off cross-dressing livestock, and match wits with a diabolical Count named Nefarious. It's a mind-reeling toonatopia that'll have you acting so depraved you might even shock yourself. Send someone an exploding turkey. Watch Spike the Clown torture balloon animals. If you've got any energy left after those escapades then try and prevent an all-out war between the cartoon forces of good and evil. Word to the wise: BETTER PACK AN ANVIL!

Its not just that people are lazy, the Epic Game Store is an objectively bad service, especially compared to Steam. It has very few features and, perhaps most importantly, is prone to being hacked for credit card data every so often, which is no Bueno. If they want people to switch to their service, they should be spending money on improving their service so it actually does what people want, not try to buy their way into the market.

All these new game platforms are just like these new video streaming services. Nobody wants to switch from Netflix or Hulu to a worse platform (and pay more money when they're already paying for Netflix/Hulu). I love Star Trek, but I'm not signing up for CBS' stupid streaming platform.

It's not about being lazy, it's just not something that's worth doing at all.

Moonlighter & This War of Mine are this week's free games in Epic. At current acceleration rate (from 1 free game every two weeks, to a free game every week, to two free games a week), I expect the Epic store to close down as a completely unviable business in a few months.

However, as in the last couple of games, the mac version is "unsupported" even when one exists, and This War of Mine is simply "unavailable", so I'm not sure exactly what I just "got". Probably, on balance, I got nothing but a bad customer experience, which is the Epic store's primary purpose, it seems.

But then you have to make an epic games store account.

The account is free, and you don't even need to give them a payment system if you stick to collecting the free games, but please be aware that it is hit-and-miss (mostly miss) if Epic carries the mac versions of videogames. So if you have a mac, you probably don't need to bother. Civ VI, for example, has a mac version, but Epic doesn't have it.
