Can belladonna handle hot, humid southern summers and mild winters?

We've been considering getting it for its beautiful purple bell shaped flowers, and the novelty of having a poisonous plant in our garden.

We've had an oleander in the past which died on us after about 2 years, and I was worried that the same would happen to this other plant.

Both oleander and belladonna should grow well there. I suspect that the oleander dying would be because of a soil or microbiome problem.
