Mike Mearls does a Happy Fun Hour each week where he designs a new sub-class. I believe that on occasion these designs may even make it into Unearthed Arcana for play testing. In any event, the last two weeks he has been designing a new wizard sub-class. The Mystic Mage (name is still up in the air).
His intention was to design a sub-class that wouldn't replace the eventually intended Mystic class, but would fit within the existing Wizard sub-class game structure instead. He didn't think this approach would actually work for the Mystic, but he was going to try it anyway. However, by the end of the last Happy Fun Hour he had begun to change his mind and likes the sub-class. It's not a full blown Mystic, but it is a Mage Mystic that might hit a happy middle ground that some DMs and players would like.
If anyone is interested in taking a look at what has been developed so far, the links to the last two Mike Mearls Happy Fun Hours are below.
