New campaign starting this weekend.

DM hasn't DM'd for almost a decade, old school AD&D and DMd 1-2 short 3.0 campaigns back when...

So, starting off level 2, and CORE 3.5, although I did show him, and he's allowing flaws for feats and 1 trait from UA at creation, and will be allowing (as he's familiarizing himself with them) the stuff from Complete series going forward.

So, this is what I came up with, well 2 versions. But I like this one better, as, if we make it to level 20 (unlikely, but I like to plan through) there's no reason 1 level of ftr hurts the top end, as a 20 rogue, gets nothing but REF and +1 BAB and a few extra skills. The ftr 1 gets that BAB +1 earlier, and bonus feat.

Kind of my own Brute Rogue,

Feat progression thoughts (so long as DM opens up the books as he says he will as we level):

3 Quick Reconnoiter (free active spot/listen each round, +2 initiative)
6 Leap attack
9 Shock Trooper
12 --- improved crit? Leadership (wizard craft bot?) Not sure really...
15
18

[I]Also, +1 dex at 4th. Debating, do I go all stats to dex or Str. I'm thinking long term, the 20 dex for a total of +3 mod to Init, AC, skills, REF is more valuable than the +2 H/D. Thoughts?

Shock Trooper for Headless charge of course, as part of leap attack, and if 1st in order, or vs any flat footed, all that extra damage dice...

The fighter level opens up all the martial weapons of course. The early bonus feat, and making sure to get S.T. at 9th.

Then character history for him, the XXXXXXXXXs were for DM to fill in for his home brew world (he did, I just didn't re type it yet)

The orc tribe of XXXXXX was a fairly tolerant tribe, for several generations, since the reign of Chief XXXXXX 'the man friend' who heralded in an end to the long, debilitating skirmishes with the human tribes; they had thrived, using loose borders of hunting grounds, that were rarely contested, and even then, mostly peaceable challenges were used to settle disputes that allowed the orcs to use their physical prowess and knowledge of the lands to often win such contests, vs all out battle that left both sides weakened. Trade was even done, although both sides often over reached in their deals, a kind of unspoken agreement, of often grudging respect, allowed for all the thrive.

Then the famine came, 2 years of drought, that left the fields and forests that allowed the rich wildlife to flurish cut the herds of deer and bison, loosing 8 of 10 in most herds the 1st summer. The colder months were no better, for the hare, fox and ground hogs also were devastated, many starved. When the following spring brought mid summer temperatures and no trace of rain, all knew it would be worse that year. There are many stories of how it started then, late that spring... A watering hole gone dry, pushing man to orc streams that were barely there, orcs going too far into human forests looking for meat to hunt... it mattered not, by the end of summer, all the generations long peace was over. Orc and Man clashed. Orc often won, only because the Old Ones remembered the tales of their Old Ones, telling the strength that Man flesh gave to orcs when consumed. Many Man hearts were consumed. The Orcs regained strength, the Orcs were winning. That 2nd fall, some human tribes, who were the strongest remained. They took vengeance where they could. That fall, the great Man tribe of XXXXXXX came to the village of (orc)xxxxxx they attacked in mid day heat, when orcs rested their eyes in the shade. They came like thieves and weaklings, sneaking and killing quietly till finally the alarms rang.

But it was too late. Tribe xxxxx was decimated. They few survivors, mostly female, young and old, traveled far (direction) toward the less civilized Orcs deep in the mountains. Where they hunted caves for giant bugs, made no pacts with Men, and only accepted the surviving females and slaves, weak from generations of Man-trading. One young such slave, who was taken by the chieftains son as the prize beauty, was with child. She only realized it just before coming to the caves, and knew, she had known no Orc husbandry yet. But that large, so large, almost giant Man had taken her. She hid her shame. Then, she gave birth. The babe was strong looking, although the color was light, and the tusks too small, the slave concubine attributed it to her mother's side having some mild skin. The child was raised Orc, but it was apparent, he was different, strong, yes, but not a wild brute like his step father. He calculated his attacks, winning against larger, wilder, deep orcs through precision, not brute force.

Until his 13th year. When his hair turned sandy blond, and his skin became too pink. The shaman knew the truth. He knew a half breed, and also knew the shame the slave girl had brought on the Chieftains name. The slave had bore the chief's son 3 other children, all were sacrificed 1st. Then the bastard half breeds mother was taken up, he tried to fight, but was bound tightly. In the wild commotion of many orcs trying to half drag her to the alter, half try try to tear her limbs on the way, she dropped a broken spear head behind the young bastard. As he watched his mother spread over the alter, he freed himself, thinking to tear through the crowd as he freed himself. His mother caught his eye just then, a tear and a look of grim determination told him to run while the wild frenzy was focused on her. She made no noise as the 1st blade pierced her gut, the dull knife tearing her abdomen so the shaman could pull her tainted womb from her and feed the fire, and cleanse the tribe in the eyes of (Gruumsh? XXXXX evil orc god). The now nameless half breed rolled backwards free of the post he was bound too, he got a near 4 minute head start before the tribe came after him. For a night and day he ran down the mountain, up another, breaking fingers making his dangerous climbs. Near noon that day, the hunters were almost upon him, tracker wargs baying for his blood, he came to a peak. It overlooked a stony river below, that fed a waterfall just beyond.

He remembered his mother's look of determination for him to live. There was only 1 path. As the 1st spear reached out toward him, he stepped back, off the cliff. Cold air, bright sky, and the rush of freedom came to violent end. Hard, wet, darkness consumed him.

He woke some time later, hours, days, a week? He was warm, dry, he knew pain. His eyes made out the outline in the darkness, of a form, bent, small, frail. Stoking a fire in this cave. The aroma of meat and garlic, sage and blood filled the air. The bent form came to him, her frail, grey pink-white hands crooked and misshapen, held toward him a cracked wooden bowl, tilting it toward his face. She fed him. Her ancient, and kind eyes upon him.

Days, turned to weeks, to winter. Ablazia nursed him to health with her knowledge of the plants and herbs. Trapping hare, rat and lizard to feed them. Ablazia was as he. An outcast, a half breed. Her mother an ELF, her father a wild orc. She was turned out, not in the same fashion as he, but turned out by the elves of XXXXXXXX who loved only their own vain beauty and trees, flowers and sun; they couldn't tolerate her once she could walk. Ablazia was old. Not sure how old, but she knew decades before this cave, and decades times decades in this cave. Apart from all but a few hermit orcs and goblins who came from deep in the caves. That winter, she passed from the cave, and the world. She took to calling the orc-boy Darby, after a pet coyote she had many years before. Darby appreciated the name. Any name. Ablazia had a few valuables, and a single knife and long spear. Darby took the goat paths out of the mountains that spring, finding Man lands, and learning to make his way, any way he could. 1 Goal set firmly in mind, to someday return to the Mountain clan of XXXXXXXXX and bring ruin upon it, to avenge his mother's tortured demise, and bring peace to her tortured soul.

With your sources limited to what you've mentioned, that's not a bad build. People will often build a Rogue with something else in place of that last useless level. Fighter isn't a bad one. Another common option is Ranger, since you still get all the martial proficiencies, but a better skill list and the ability to use some Cure wands without making a UMD check. Plus, Ranger is very front-loaded for features. You do lose out on the Fighter bonus feat that you care about.

Another option, if Unearthed Arcana is on the table, is to use an Overwhelming Attack Monk (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/classes/variantCharacterClasses.htm#overwhelmingAttack). Basically you get a specific feat in place of the Monk's usual. In this case that feat is Power Attack. Also a minor bonus to Intimidate. All good saves, Monk's Unarmed Strike, and a couple of Knowledge skills that aren't on the Rogue list.

hrmmm, Ranger 1. I'll crunch some things out... But that feat keeps my feat line in check...

Cleave isn't a MUST have, but it's nice... And again, skills monkey isn't his big thing.. But thanks for the tip to look at.

There is a fighter variant in UA that grants SA instead of bonus feats, so you could drop cleave and get 11d6 SA.

No, that variant gets Sneak Attack at the same rate as a Rogue normally does, not in place of every Fighter bonus feat they're losing.

Start out with Combat Reflexes, and use a Glaive as your primary weapon. You can wear armor spikes to still threaten (and make AoOs into) adjacent squares.

A Wood Elf (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/elf.htm#woodElf) from the core MM gets +2 Str and Dex, -2 Con and Int, it's generally better than Half-Orc (swap Dex and Con, and put your 4th level point into Con to catch it back up). That gets Ranger as a favored class, and you can dip one level for Fast Movement (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/classes/variantCharacterClasses.htm#ranger) instead of that Fighter level.

See if you can use the Wilderness Rogue (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/classes/variantCharacterClasses.htm#rogueVariantWilderness Rogue) variant from UA, it has some minor changes and allows you to pick Hide in Plain Sight as one of your Rogue special abilities.

See if you can take Wild Cohort (http://archive.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/re/20031118a), which will give you a flanking buddy.

Rogue 20 is not a dead level. (http://archive.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/cwc/20061013a)

That's what he's saying: Rogue 1 gives +1d6 SA, so variant Fighter 1 gives +1d6 SA. Rogue 19/variant Fighter 1 gets +10d6+1d6 = +11d6 of sneak attack, much in the same way Rogue 19/Spellthief 1 does.
Variant Fighter levels being added to Rogue levels to determine your final extra die of sneak attack is a common misconception, but it's not the way it works.

Yeah, sadly, UA wasn't fully open, just flaws and a trait.

And we were ONLY to use 3.5 PhB for creation.

I went with Rogue 1/ Ranger 1, and will go rogue forward.

I swapped to Glaive when I looked at martial weapons again, but also Greataxe too (only used Glaive thus far, there is a dwarf monk in party, is gonna go grapple boss, so using reach + flank with him in close, is nice).

Party is human druid, my brute, and 2 dwarves, 1 cleric of war/travel and 1 monk, grapple focus. And all in a world where casting ANY spell, is a death sentence, unless you're an NPC...

We'll see how it goes.

Half-orc has barbarian as favored class, so you'll trigger XP penalties with Fighter1/RogX unless I'm missing something or your DM is ignoring that rule.

Note that Bbn1 or 2/Rog 18 or 19 also works fine. Grab Extra Rage when you can.

If completes are in play you'll want to pick up Staggering Strike at some point, with Power Attack and two-handed weapons you'll have some high DCs.

I'm not really big on Cleave but it does work nicely at low levels.
