Unfortunately, an awakened animal cannot serve as your animal companion (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/awaken.htm). Also, an awakened creature will probably be an NPC, which means you will have little to no control over it's character class.

As for 1st-time druid tips, the most obvious is to take Natural Spell.

You COULD use intelligent enhancements on it, like a headband of intelligence and a few buffs.

can i do this with or without DM approvle.

Everything needs DM approval. Even the things that don't, technically receive it passively.

Never try and sneak something past the DM.

Yeah, there's an old adage: "If you didn't tell the DM, it never happened."

If you're really sold on the whole awakened dire squirrel thing, you could just take another animal companion i.e. a dog/leopard/tiger, and then at sixth level take leadership and choose one for your cohort? As for druid tips, umm firstly A. feats are your enemy. Druids are the ultimate Jack of all trades when you start specialising, you’re likely to forget about some area’s so be careful. Secondly you don’t need to pick a focus. Sure you can focus on casting if you want, or wild shape. But it isn’t really necessary especially if you’re a first timer. Druid is one of the few base classes that I’d actually recommend taking straight to 20, the abilities and spell progress nicely so there’s no need to mix with anything. Though if you do want to focus and mix, then you could take a class like beast master or master of many forms and be fine.

Augment Summoning is often nice for a Druid and Natural Spell is useful too.

Unless you could find a way to play a girallon, thri-keen are the only things I can think of.

for low LA i think Thri Kreen are pretty much the only choice unless there is a multi arm template somewhere

If Savage Species is an allowed source, the Insectile template gets you +4 arms, plus a few other things, for +2 LA.
