The silliest music festival in the world is going down tonight. I've kept half an eye on the semi-finals, and my favorite so far is the Danish Viking power ballad (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=42JL4rEgp_U). Hungary seems to be leading in the Rock category (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lR8x85ZFu44), and the Netherlands are representing the USA (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BtPKKWgNR9g) this year.

Anyone else watching this evening? (Or I guess this afternoon in the America's, or early tomorrow morning in Australia, which is joining in again this year.)

(Note on that last clip: the festival rules are that you have to sing live, no recorded voices, but due to the complexity of soundchecks and such you can't play live, all music has to be recorded. That's why they just stopped playing their instruments halfway through, everybody knows they were faking it anyway.)

I'll be watching! I haven't missed a Eurovision final since 2006. I haven't heard any of the songs though; I like to decide my favourite on the night.

Good year, good year... (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gAh9NRGNhUU)

(Best Eurovision choice ever.)

Yassss! It was Hard Rock Hallelujah that convinced me Eurovision was a good idea!

Unfortunately the TV is out, I'll have to wait a couple of weeks to see the UK lose completely.

I will always hold a soft spot for Eurovision for introducing me to Flor-de-Lis' "Todas as ruas do amor", an absolutely lovely song. Plus, it's always had at least a few good songs every year.

Funny, I'd figure this one (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ShhYXJpLkdk) would be your favorite. :smallwink:

Will probably not watch Eurovision this year : < I have this weekend school of mine and I cannot spend up-to-midnight watching this show : <

(I'm gonna watch Eurovision on the YT the day after, though, they have an official Youtube channel.)

Vampire the Masquerade, much? I kinda liked it, but not enough to vote for it.

Hungary with a metal act atm. Song is OK, Vocals sound live. But not a single cable in sight for the guitarists and the bassist, and it's quite interesting how the drummer can make a single tom sound like three different ones :)

So it looks like ESC is the same as always.

You're not allowed live instruments in Eurovision. It was pretty weak, as metal goes, but I might have to vote for it on principle.

My favourite so far has been Czech Republic. That was fun. Netherlands is shaping up well, too.

Yup, it's a "we have to do the final soundcheck really fast" thing. Voices on the other hand have to be live. Since it's in the rules people tend not to pretend too well.

I think Cyprus (currently on) is going for the prize for "most disco costume".

By the way, has anyone figured out exactly how that Moldavian act with the three doors manages to show three women at the same time while there are only two there? (Maximum allowed number of people on stage is six.) One of the guys standing in? Fake legs?

Is it me, or is that whole song/dance/look very late '90s? It's like we've gone straight back to the bad old days of wall-to-wall euro-pop.

I considered that, but they looked kind of different. One had the skirt visible (low enough) and one did not, for instance. But that might just be the perspective. It would also mean it doesn't look good for basically anyone in the live audience.

Yeah, that was a joke.

So on reflection, I'm voting Netherlands. They were cool!

I know, but if I'm they're going to pretend, can't they at least pretend convincingly? Sorry, pet peeve of mine.

Well, for an ESC metal song, it was quite good, IMHO.

this is (https://youtu.be/RlTe_nnewIY?t=2m39s) not Eurosong, but the clip at the linked point relates to the above comment.

Personally, I am sad that Eläkeläiset didn't make it to Eurovision in 2010. On a side note, Satellite was terrible.

*Looks it up.* That is kind of a cool song, in an "Oeteldonk" way.

The Danish vikings are near the bottom of the list so far, so much for my taste being an indication.

Massive cultural bias aside, then i do think Higher Ground deserves a top 5 spot.
It has a coherent scenography and a powerful message thats delivered in english.

It's tight at the top! You know, that Austrian guy was pretty good. He deserves to be up there in the top three.

Sweden was second in the jury vote, but fourth last in the public vote.

Harsh. I thought he'd do better than that. Clearly the viking ballad was more to the public's taste.

But the winner of the popular vote, Israel, is also the overall winner. That's always nice.

Oh, lovely song! Thanks!

I've thought of listening to all Eurovision songs ever, but there are just so many! I never got past the nineties, and even then I don't think I've ever heard every single one, only the top 10-15, I think.

Shame Rasmussen didn't win, I really liked their song.

I still don't know why Iceland didn't do better last year. Greta Salome's song and performance were great!

Eurovision is so cool! I wish we had an Americavision. Like countries from south and north America for example.

Why settle for a knock-off? After Australia I'm sure the definition of Europe can be expanded further.

Israel Is in europe? For me eurovision is crap and full of politics. Winner of this year is strange and awful. There is no art in these.
