View Full Version : How to access the spell Plane Shift as a Druid?

Greetings, all!

Let's assume I have access to all official 3.5 materials (including magazines and web articles) and want to be able to, as a full Druid or a Druid who dips minimally into a PrC, be able to cast the spell plane shift. (Domains count.)

Let's also assume that doing this indirectly doesn't work. This means no minions can use it (like a Movanic Deva), nor can I access it via shapeshifting.

Let's further assume that items are allowed but unavailable to this character at present.

What are the best solutions?

Thankee!

does your DM allow the extra spell feat to grab off list casting?

I'm guessing this means that planar shepherd and wildshaping into something with plane shift isn't an option?

The Hades domain has plane shift at level 7, so picking up a domain will do it, but otherwise, I don't think a druid has any real innate method of getting access to plane shift.

A 4th-level Planar Shepherd can Plane Shift once a day, but only between his chosen plane and the Prime.

Dipping Contemplative and picking any domain with Prismatic Sphere in it (which includes Artifice, Family, Protection, and Sun) would give you access to Plane Shift via the violet effect of the sphere, but it only works on people other than you. I am unsure whether you can share a Prismatic Sphere with your animal companion so that you can "benefit" from it.

EDIT: The list of domains I was referring to doesn't have the Hades domain. Where is it from?

Planar Shepherd. Easy. Done.

If you need to go to other planes than just the one, and you want to do it without losing any casting, then Agent Retriever.

I think I need a new domain list (searchable by spells) then. I was using the one here (http://chet.kindredcircle.org/).

I use this one (http://ftm3.altervista.org/ASMoNM/domains.html), which is comprehensive (to my knowledge), although Planar Domains are listed separately (http://ftm3.altervista.org/ASMoNM/PlanarDomains.html) because I guess they are not technically Cleric domains.

Looks awesome! Thanks Troacctid.

A Planar Domain counts as two domains. So they can normally only be taken by clerics, and then the cleric only has one domain instead of the usual two.

No Planar Shepherd. This is after the GM removed my 4 Planar Shepherd levels due to balance concerns with the rest of the group.

Thankee!

Leadership, cohorts, etc. fall under the 'no minions' rule.

Contemplative for spell domain, greater anyspell, plane shift is on the nar demonbinder list at 5.

Improved Oneiromancy feat (HoH) adds Dream Walk, which functions in a vaguely similar manner to Plane Shift (but not really what OP is looking for)...

There's a few ways to get Plane Shift as an SLA. Did it specifically have to be as a spell?

Agent Retriever is the only way I can think of that doesn't lose casting.

How to get plane shift in SLA form?

Apart from being a high LA/RHD race that gets it (Janni etc.), there's a couple of options, but they require jumping through hoops and/or losing caster levels (you will lose druid aiblities as well):

Elocater 6 (EPH): no casting progression, automatically gets psionic plane shift as a power known
Gatecrasher 9 (MotP): no casting progression.
Hellbreaker 10 (FC2): no casting progression.
Jaunter 4 (EttDP): no casting progression.
Planar Champion 7 (MotP): no casting progression (also, the ability isn't proper plane shift).
Planar Shepherd 4 (FoE): full casting progression, but already advised as not an option.
Lord of Tides 9 (Sandstorm): lose one caster level; plane shift to elemental planes only. Supernatural ability rather than SLA, so that's a bonus.
Planeshifter (MotP): 1/day at 1st level; at will at 8th level. If you take 8 levels, you only lose 2 caster levels. You need 5th level arcane spells to enter, so maybe Druid 9 using Southern Magician? May also require some cross class skills in Knowledge (the planes). So a 1 level dip and loss of 1 caster level for 1 day; or 8 level dip for loss of 2 caster levels and at will.

If you can somehow qualify for a bloodline feat, Penumbra Bloodline (Dragon Compendium) adds Plane Shift as a 7th level spell known. It may be very difficult to qualify as a prepared divine caster.

Agent Retriever is the only way I can think of that doesn't lose casting.

Ah yes, I didn't think to look at epic options. Good call.

If you can be a Raptoran, a Druid 7/Skypledged 4 can cast Plane Shift via Divine Spellpool II.

Thankee, all for your aid!

Before this post, I didn't know about the Agent Retriever (due to it being epic) nor Planeshifter (due to it losing casting and coming from a 3.0 book part that I didn't know offhand), and I hadn't seriously considered Skypledged due to losing access to [Water], [Fire], and Earth spells. Still, it's good to know these are options.

You could also get a hold of either a Nightmare (SRD/MM1) or a White Hart (Dragon 343) for some additional planar travel options.
