Random Rules for a Random Banter

1. Spam. For the purposes of RB, one word posts are generally considered spam. Likewise, posts that are nothing but *actions like this* are also be considered spam. Remember that the quality of the post's content is much better than the speed of your response.

2. This isn't the Play by Post or Town forum, nor is it the Silly Message Board Games or Structured Games forum. Please avoid continuous roleplay or mock battles and fights such as the "competition for control of the universe".

3. If it's already a thread, don't bring it to RB. RB has such a huge range of subject matter even restricted to the little snippets that probably don't warrant their own thread, it doesn't need legitimate thread topics cluttering it up as well. The exception to this is to bring something that is off-topic from one thread, but on-topic for RB and the subject doesn't warrant a thread of its own.

4. Don't advertise other threads in RB. Just because these new threads move at speeds more appropriate to a message board than an IM session doesn't mean you need to come over to RB and brow beat people into posting in your latest brainchild.

5. Please don't post single line posts alerting us to your current status -- as in "I'm back." This is Random Banter, not "How to stalk Random GitP forum members."

6. Don't poke, kick or bump the thread. It will move at whatever pace it wants to. Also, please refrain from Captain Obvious comments akin to "My, the thread is fast today."

7. Random Banter can only be as good, or as entertaining, as you make it. Demands to be entertained will fall on deaf ears unless you can add something more meaningful to the conversation.

8. As this is a public forum, where the current topic is nicely recorded for you, and not a conversation where you could have missed the beginning, please refrain from asking something to the effect of "What's the topic?". Please take the time to read up a bit first.

9. Thread Creator must include the words "Random" and "Banter" as well as the thread #. Try to be concise as well.

10. Every post should contain two visible, legible complete sentences, Subject and Predicate. C'mon, make your old English teachers proud.

11. Remember, Random Banter is not your IM client. If you want to have a back and forth discussion with just one person, look in their contact information for IM details.

12. Whenever a new thread is created, all "first post", "first page", and all posts of that nature will be deleted by the administrators. Please avoid doing this, as it is frustrating for them to deal with one-lined posts like this.

13. Double-posting is not your friend. We have edit buttons for a reason.

14. Once you have made a Random Banter thread, you must wait 50 threads before making another one.

15. If you can avoid dibs calling on making the next thread, that will avoid people needing to wait if the thread hits 50 pages while the dibs-caller is asleep.

Finn, I'm glad to hear that the infection is out and that you have someone you're comfortable with changing your bandages. I wish you a fast recovery.

Hello everyone! It's your overworked and underpaid wombat, back from the lurking realm. How is everyone?

Thanks! Was back at the nurse today, since the regular services are open Mon-Fri. I've actually ended up getting a rash from my bandages, so they've had to change to a tad fancier one with a more gel-like adhesive.

You're alive! ALIIIIIIVE! AAHAHAHAHAH!

Ugh. Good luck.
I haven't used iTunes in quite a while, but I definitely recall that there were some songs it just refused to load onto my devices. No idea why; they were the same as any other song, and sometimes songs from the same album would differ in whether or not they worked.
Download new songs, make sure they're checked, sync your device, watch as 80% of them make it onto said device, but the best 20% are in no way acknowledged by iTunes, spend half an hour restarting computer, unplugging and plugging back in your iPhone, cursing everything Apple is and stands for, and then nine times out of ten it'll just suddenly work, despite you doing nothing different from any of the other dozens of times.

But hey, maybe it's better now!
Or maybe it was my computer; that's also not unlikely.

It isn't, haha. I tried syncing my phone to Itunes, but couldn't get it to sync because of an 'invalid connection'. Now I'm trying to restore the Ipod to the factory settings because I remember doing something like that last time similar problems came up, so we'll see if that works, even though it means resyncing all my music all over again.

Doesn't help that I don't get my music through Itunes (does anybody?), I just use it to store and play music, so I think that complicates the process.

We've been struck by a really unseasonable heat wave, pushing the temperature up to ~27°C in the afternoons. As a rather heat resilient person, I'm fine with this, albeit a bit taken by surprise. However, my apartment faces the south east with quite a lot of windows, so the temperature can push up to 29°C indoors while I'm at work, and even in the morning after a relatively cold night (~8°C), it can sport an indoor temperature of 27°C. Suffice to say, the dress code has changed from 'clothing optional' to 'clothing prohibited'.

What worse is, my landscape(-ish) at work is poorly ventilated, and now the sun rises high enough in the sky to shine through our windows, making this room really hot as well. I might be resilient to heat, but hot temperatures are still terrible for my work efficiency, as I can't focus very well when I'm hot. http://i.imgur.com/b6MRqPf.png

Well hello all, I hope I'm not breaking banter protocol by jumping in on this threadwagon, I've never been too good at all that social malarkey.

(I was making a joke about how Canadians are always apologetic but honestly given how thiings have been going for me it's super appreciated)

Not to make light of being in a bad place, but this reminds me a lot of when I was in university.

Specifically I had a Chinese friend who got annoyed at the British saying sorry all the time. Of course she was too polite to say this in private, but with the number of times I apologised for it she was almost ready to hit me.

About three years later I achieved ultimate Britishness when I apologised to my bag for tripping over it, a couple of weeks after apologising for turning up exactly on time for a meeting (to the minute, the lecturer was shocked).

Also, minor note, that Chinese friend was probably the first person I seriously crushed on, and since then I've not had a single crush on somebody of my own nationality to the point it's a running joke with one of my friends.

Now what I originally planned to post before seeing the earlier ones.

I've recently started a new job (as in a month and a bit ago) and my accent has become a recurring joke among my colleagues because I just sound so much more posh than everybody (comes from growing up in the home counties and having speech therapy as a kid but working in central London). It's not bullying or anything, it's just one of those amusing things like them all assuming I'm in a relationship.

Nobody said anything about puddings, get your hands off my Spotted Richard. And the custard! :smalltongue:

(Which really isn't that popular anymore, people prefer sticky toffee pudding as a general rule.)

EDIT: unfortunately 2D8HP I sound pretty much like a posh git. Not in my head of course, but I might have been Anne to squeak a radio job even before regional accents we allowed (although I'm not BBC standard). I can be as loud as him though.

If I ever post something on my YouTube channel or turn up in the media you might get to hear my accent, but right now I'm too busy convincing the chef I won't knife myself.

Oh, geez. I like heat as much as the next Canadian (wait... I'm not sure if that's how that's supposed to go...), but that's excessive. On the politeness issue, I have found that only Canadian Let's Players will apologize to zombies or other monsters attacking them. Just saying.

Look, it is said that many stereotypes have a grain of truth somewhere deep down. This is not the case for the apologetic Canadian; it's entirely true, 100%.
Honestly, it's a reflex for me at this point. High school was a nightmare for this; every day, each time I traveled from one class to another, it was just a constant stream of apologies. Doesn't matter if I actually slowed them down in any way, and it certainly doesn't matter if it's my fault or theirs.

Oh, geez. I like heat as much as the next Canadian (wait... I'm not sure if that's how that's supposed to go...), but that's excessive. I know my room in particular has that issue, and putting up thick posterboard in the summer really helped. (The fact that it's white still helped to let some glow in.)

The problem with that is that I really like the light. I style myself as some kind of nerd, but I'm secretly starting to suspect that I am in fact a highly confused plant. Like I'm really the son of a tree and no one ever told me I was adopted by this pair of human nerds.

Wait, you actually rolled stats back in the day? Not at home? In front of people?

Where´s the problem? Back then, even the classes you gained with the best rolls were more than fragile in the first levels, so while it was damn cool to have rolled a Ranger or Paladin, you basically didn't attach to your character until 5th or 6th level, the range they were beyond being insta-killed by some abilities.

As I recall, there used to be a rule that would allow you to lower one stat by 2 to increase another by 1, so, if you fancied being a fighter but rolled 3 for your Strength, you could bring that back up to tolerable regions by basically dumping every other stat but Constitution.

Not consistently, no. However, my long commute and kinda unfortunate ability to handle sleep deprivation really well does tend to build up some kind of hidden stress capacitor, and every now and then it will unload and I will sleep straight through the apocalypse if it so decides to happen that morning, naturally causing me to get really late for work. Like I said, it's just my experience. The main point is, it doesn't seem to *reduce* the heat generated in any way?

I think it can be explained by the curtains preventing the heat in the room from radiating back out the window again. And since the space between the curtain and the window probably is quite a lot hotter thanks to the sun, the room is going to continue heating up that way. Any locked in heat has to find other ways to escape.

To compare, if you want something heated by the desert sun, you put it in a black plastic bag, not a clear one.

That said, if you also open the window, the equation is going to be a little bit different.

I've pretty much proven that I have no self-preservation instinct whatsoever when it comes to managing my work and sleep schedules, and the fact that I can maintain an acceptable performance even with several days of accumulated sleep deprivation isn't doing any wonders for me. Plus, it's quite noticable that the poor sleep does lock me out from my true potential. I had a problem I told my stakeholders I wouldn't have time to fix in the two weeks remaining before a release. I then overslept one morning, and proceeded to fix it in the span of just two days.

I can hear you wondering "what about curtains?"

I wonder that too.

I might be too late, but good luck with this and I hope you have fun! Never went to one of these camps, but perhaps consider bringing an icebreaker like a deck of cards or a simple game?

FATE might do wonders with newbies...

I'm off to a church camp/retreat in the morning! So excited . . . hoping most of all to learn a lot and make connections with people . I'm trying not to get my hopes up unreasonably high (which is difficult).

I just really want to find some friends to share things with (and we can grow together). I have never had a friend who shares my faith and I really want one.

Whatever happens, I know there'll be good bits, and I've got so many butterflies in my stomach right now!

Like Anon Wizard said, you're the person who posts The Threads.

Anyway, I've got a very strange dream to share with all of you.

I was watching a mixture of the Ice Age movies crossed over with a comedic super hero esque film starring Ben Stiller as a guy with fire powers and puppets are invovled, and this IS ased on a thing that is real I'm like 80% sure, but the connection it has to Ice Age is super tenious so I don't know if it was actually connected beyond there being a squirrell who does stuff in it. They were trying to get these bad guys out of their house who are from some other thing I've seen that I _swear_ is real but I cannot remember where a bunch of kids have super powers like being invisible and stuff. Also they have teenage mutant ninja turtles but instead of being anthromorphic they're just actually turtles who are mutants and probably teenagers but they don't do anything. He defeats them by stealing the two light capsules from the girl who has light controlling powers and smashing them together with his fire powers to cause a blinding light, then causing a mini nuclear reactor with the small nuclear reactor he was given in the first film to take away his powers if he wanted, causing a massive miniture nuclear reaction explosion which made everyone decide to leave and split the turtles into many smaller turtles.

Also this took place in my Grandma's apartment but also a large church with flowers that had a dew in them that let you adjust your powers strength. Also at some point during all of this I was playing a new Dark Souls game and I tried to help someone beat a boss but I ended up going into it solo and losing but almost doing it. The film ends with an after credit sequence that shows a penguin riding a mean blue whale that constantly freezes it under water to make sure it stays on him, and then a squirrel that ends up in some sort of dinosaur graveyard and after fighting off these weird rat things he ends up getting a thing stuck on his head which breaks to reveal a necromancer helmet and it implies that he's going to revive all the dinosaurs to fight in the next film.

And then the credits actually roll and it's this weird and trippy claustrophobic style thing where it's a bunch of raising and closing doors that you have to walk through, but mid way through it stops and switches to Ben Stiller's character walking through a movie set explaining how the credit roll works and we start hearing a rumble implying something is happening, and then we cut to a graveyard in the church the fighting happened in and there's a guy I've never seen reading an evil note left for him and deducing egyptians are involved but the person who wrote it is dumb and didn't use terms properly anyway so he doesn't suspect anything will happen from it. Then we cut to a bar where Lisa and Bart Simpson are watching an ad for the next movie, which is actually about puppets taking over the city with a dome and forcing everyone to be in a christmas movie. Then Bart throws away my garbage for me and I wake up.

Honestly, in experience it's when the dreams start to get sane you have to be worried.

One of the few dreams I remember was really short, and remarkably sane. I woke up in my bed at 10:00, late for work so there was no point going in. I have no idea where that dream was going because I then woke up, a few minutes before my 7:00 alarm.

I'm honestly not sure if that dream is a better or worse sign than the ones where my ex visits me but forgets to bring clothes...

My dad dropped a wooden spoon, yelled at the constantly-nervous dog that she "stole his spoon" even while I was telling him that I saw him drop it, and then claimed "I never mess around" when my brother tried to assure me that he was just messing around.

The absolute worst dream I had:

There had been a very nasty situation with some people I had thought were friends. Details aren't particularly relevant, but basically there were a ton of accusations going around of stuff I hadn't done, I was being blamed because I wouldn't explain to anyone what was going on but also threatened if I did (not that I had any idea anyway), and it was a huge mess.

In the dream I said everything I wanted to say and everything I was told I couldn't say, and people listened and believed me and I had my friends back and got to go back to the clubs I'd been forced out of and such.

And then I woke up.

Unless this is a joke you missed Abraham Erskine's point on why Steven Rogers was the only one who could be cap.

He has strength of character! Steve Rogers is respected by everyone, despite:

1-Not being the strongest.
2-Not having any real power.
3-Not being a scientist.
4-Not being a god.
5-Not being the king of one of the most advanced and rich nations on the planet.

And people respect him because he’s the first to protect others from any danger, he’s willing to sacrifice anything for his best friend. Caracters that are way more powerful than him, heave a sigh of relief when he arrives to fight. He’s always first in line, no matter who’s in front of him, no matter who’s behind him.

Beasts take orders from him; gods fight alongside him; geniuses admire him; kings respect him; enemies fear him because he is more powerful then the sum of his parts. He respects, he is a good leader and he acts to do what is really rigth no matter if that's againts what most people think is rigth.

Not it doesn't, Red skull took the same serum. It boosts your attributes traits features and characteristics.

It's an instantaneous process that reveals what is truly inside the person without having to do any extra work.

If your evil you will get super evil (like Red skull). Because, he was already a monster deep down.

If you are good you will get stronger (like Steve). Because, he was already strong and a hero deep down.

Steroids they just make muscles grow faster and there are harmful side effects to your health, most people do it out of vanity or obsession. (Let me guess not all steroid users?)

Look I already explained the joke. Do I have to explain the joke twice? The joke is that when people in movies take steroids they immediately get giant muscles, the same way as Captain America did in the film. Hence the joke. Since you were talking about his stats being poor, the joke is that I assumed that you were talking about him prior to the serum, and then made a joke comparing the serum to steroids.

Also why did Red Skull get as strong as Cap if that's the case? Cause physically the effects were pretty much identical. Except for the skull thing, and Erskine says that was because he hadn't perfected the serum.

It is a very good way of attracting people if you are a good avatarist and made it yourself. When I see really cool avatars, I tend to look at the signature to see who made it, and if it's self-made, I tend to remember the avatarist. I've still got a bunch of good avatarists floating around in my head, even though they haven't been active for years.

Yeah, main reason I don't have a custom Avatar is because I'm really bad at making them (I did try, although the picture died with my old laptop) and too proud to ask my brother to make me one.

Honestly the main reason I want a custom Avatar is because it'll make my posts easier to pick out when I'm scrolling through a thread looking at something I posted months to years ago. Furniture?

Nope.

But I seldom have visitors.

The closest I get is I dressing "down" outside.

I'm actually very comfortable in suits and "button up" shirts, but I find that random strangers ask me for money even more than usual so I dress in jeans and "hoodies" outside, as does my wife even though she has some nice dresses (we look like we're in uniform!).

We just find we get hassled less if we look worse and are less comfortable in stupid "casual" clothesn

Not really, but I can certainly see why that might be the case.
Personally, I refuse to worry about it because it's my place, dagnabbit, and presumably if I'm comfortable bringing someone into it they know me well enough already not to think that.

Plus, if I did that, I wouldn't be able to display much of anything. I'm of the camp that would much rather have a small number of things that I'm very happy with, than a wide variety of things I'm only somewhat happy with.
I don't have a lot of money, by any standard (except sustenance-level societies, I guess), so it takes me a while to save up for anything I want to buy. If I want to get something, then, it stands to reason it's pretty important to me, and it's worth spending the extra time researching and saving to get what I'll be happiest with.

If that means my place ends up sparsely decorated, but with very attractive items, then so be it.

I have discovered that when I'm a relatively healthy weight I just outright prefer wearing shirts, and I prefer the hang of formal trousers compared to almost anything else. When I'm the weight I currently am (i.e. morbidly obese) I can look weird when I don't dress up, tending to wear formal trousers with casual t-shirts (although next time I go clothes shopping I'm buying a set of shirts, fat or not).

As a side note, because despite being obese I'm a) rather fit and b) thinner than your average person my age I've had a lot of trouble convincing people I am fat, and even those that can see it seem to think I must be sensitive about it (bah! I'm not exactly unfit and there are potential romantic partners who like fat men, why should I care?).

Surely the car itself is more of a indicator of your wealth than anything you have in it, when you're in that situation? Anyway, it's not something that ever arises for me because I don't buy expensive things!

In america? No. A car is, in most places, a basic necessity to be employed.

I meant more like clothing or stuff in your car or whatever, not stuff in your house.

In this case, no. I sound posh, and no amount of not wearing nice clothes will change that, so people already assume I must have at least some nice stuff.

This is a cruel discrimination against those of us with disabilities that make us feel unsafe driving a car.

(Seriously, in a bad month I drop my phone at least once a day, I do not feel safe driving and never will.)

Random question: are you ever embarrassed to have expensive or fancy stuff out where people can see it? I always feel like I have to justify where I got it because otherwise I feel like I'm showing off my money. (Usually I really didn't spend that much, I just have a good eye for getting nice stuff for cheap.)

Not really. But in my case the expensive stuff is usually tools, and those are only usually seen by other folks who have expensive tools, since those are what you use to make your living. I wouldn't be able to wear clothes that were nice around too much, since I wind up spending money on work clothes which are damaged and destroyed too often to be really fancy.

Well the type of car you have can be a status symbol, but as people have said it's really a necessity. Actually it's kind of funny because the types of cars that are status symbols vary greatly by area. Like if you're out in the country where I live, it's big trucks, if you're in the city it's super fancy cars.

Well it's not really discrimination mostly it's just because things are so far away in the US. The UK is roughly forty times smaller than the US. So a lot of things are very far apart. If you live out in the suburbs, you'll probably have a minimum of a thirty minute commute every day. And that's without traffic. Now if you were living here, you'd probably want to move into one of the larger cities in the US, which can have reasonable mass transit.

Sure, but what kind of car, how old it is, and what kind of shape it's in do tend to be indicators of wealth/status.

I drove a 1984 Camry that my grandpa had fixed up after it was totaled as my main car for most of my adult years (until a year or so ago - the defroster stopped working and it's too expensive to hire someone to tear apart the dash to fix it, so it's parked until I have time/space/tools to do that myself). I once got a parking ticket for parking in a visitor spot at the high school I was substitute teaching at because they assumed it was a "student car". (They waived it once I took the ticket into the office since I was, in fact, supposed to be parking where I was parked.) I also once got pulled over for "having a dirty license plate" when driving late at night, and the cop visibly startled and changed his train of thought when he saw it was a middle-class white woman in their 30s behind the wheel (not quite sure what he was expecting - a bunch of teenagers?).

I have a friend who has wealthy parents but is not himself wealthy, so he's always driving 10-15 year old Audis. The combination of "expensive car" and "old" is particularly awkward when you're trying to find a repair shop.

I kind of have the same thing now. I bought a house, and it has an in-ground swimming pool. I didn't buy the house because I wanted a pool, pools don't actually make houses sell for more money where I live (in fact, at least one of the other prospective buyers decided not to put in an offer because they didn't want to deal with having a pool, and I suspect the pool is part of why I was able to get the house as quasi-affordably as I did after getting outbid on several other properties previously), and I wouldn't have paid money to put in a pool, but now I have a "fancy" thing about my house. It's kind of awkward, because people make assumptions about general house and lifestyle fanciness based on the fact that I have a pool.

Yeah, that's exactly what I meant. Nobody who sees me driving my 2012 Fiat Panda is going to say to themselves "There goes a millionaire being flash and showing off their wealth", but if I was in a 2018 Range Rover the situation would be somewhat different!

(The ironic thing is, if I won the lottery, I'd probably still have a Fiat Panda, because it's one of the only cars I've ever owned that I actually enjoy driving...).

Well of course!

Clothes (as I posted upthread) to reduce being hassled, and keep possessions low and bad looking (old newspapers) in the car because of break-ins.

My wife theorizes that we haven't experienced a break-in of our house because our front yard looks terrible and I have a '91 parked in the driveway (before that an '84, before that a '76), so our neighbors look more enticing to burglars (and they have been burglarized).

We also have a Prius that we keep looking nice, which my wife insists that we use for visiting open houses, which came up yesterday when we were already out in the '91 we had to go home first and swap cars.

I feel like there's a wide range where the mid-line cars are ok though. Like, I have a 10 year old honda fit. You'll see that car on all sorts of price ranges, because it's the kind of car that mostly says "I wanna get from point A to point B without a fuss."

What actually started this was I was eyeing a second-hand designerish purse. It would actually only be about $20 (it's the kind of bag that retails for like $200 full price but one really doubts anyone ever paid that even when new). And I have found that a nice bag like that will last longer, especially if you're me and have far too many meds in there and some random craft stuff and an ereader and...you get the idea. But it's got this big fancy gold label slapped on it.

That's a good point. There are certain cars that basically just make the statement "I am an adult who owns a car, which I use to drive places", possibly with a side of "with other people also in the vehicle most of the time" for some SUVs/minivans.

That is a trickier case. I've never experimented with designer handbags to see if they're actually sturdier than what I've been buying and had kind of assumed that handbags was one of those product categories where price and durabilty weren't closely related.

I came to this conclusion after I was talked into buying a Baggallini purse by being told that it would be sturdier than the cheaper purses I had been buying (which were mostly "whichever brand Target had the day my previous purse broke") and have zippers/straps that would cope better with my tendency to put too many things in my purse. This turned out not to be the case. I now buy MultiSac purses, which hold up just as well or better but are cheaper and easier to find at stores I'd go to anyway. (I want square or taller than they are wide rectangular cross-body bags with lots of zippered compartments, because I want something I can fit a book/ereader/tablet/etc. in that looks small enough that people don't make me check it at places that require large bags to be checked, and I've found that shape to let me get away with carrying the most stuff in that situation because estimating relative volume across different shapes is hard for people.) I've never tried buying a properly "designer" purse to see how those hold up in comparison.

I do buy some pretty expensive clothes, but they're "technical" rather than "fashion" so people parse them differently. (I wear $200-$300 hiking boots with wool hiking socks that cost more than $10/pair. The boots last a really long time and can be resoled, and the socks seem to last longer than cheaper socks, too.) People make assumptions about how I spend my weekends based on that, but not so much from a "how can you afford that" perspective even though they're pricey.

I suppose it might be kind of like my boots, in that once it's scuffed up and obviously in daily use it's parsed as a utility rather than status item, but I don't know if that's how it would be read for a designer purse.

@WarKitty:

Depends. I wear and use some pretty expensive stuff, but a lot of it isn't known beyond certain in groups. Thing is that we have some global brands that apparently stand for luxury, while in reality, they aren't, it´s only the price tag for the brand name as an entry hurdle. Wearing, for example, an Armani or Boss suit ain´t bad, it´s just no Saville Row or Brioni.

@2D8HP:

Funny, that. I live in a very quiet suburb of Berlin, in a "quaint and rustic" town house quarter. Thing is, we get hit every year with the usual December crime wave. Three years in a row, 39 town houses out of 40 were hit... but not mine.

Yeah I'm in that weird sort of pink-collar thing where you're supposed to look nice, but at the same time most people aren't making a whole lot and we have a lot of people who aren't making much more than what pays the bills. I get away with a bit more because I only have myself to pay for - many of my coworkers have children and I know a number who are helping to support elderly parents or similar.

I kind of feel like fashion is its own thing in a way. Because you're supposed to look nice but also look like you're not overspending, because overspending is frivolous.

I feel like a fashionable bag is more likely to get stolen. However, I also think it would depend on your habits, as in, do you frequent crowded areas or walk around at night? Are you careful with your bags, so they won't get scuffed, ripped, or even lost? Is your workplace safe enough you can leave it alone without concern? Do you travel a lot?

In my opinion, if the people around you are judging you for what you are wearing, get new people, not new things.

It has nothing to do with depression, beyond the fact that rebellious teenagers are often also depressed.

Goth is a particular fashion style that focuses heavily on dark colors, predominantly black and purple. It is associated with rebellion against authority and (ironically) tradition/groupthink.

That second association is pretty standard for basically any subculture with a twinge of the counterculture, particularly if it's heavy on younger people. There's a very predictable series of events that produces a very predictable set of criticisms. The short version.

1: A subculture with similar values that disagree with the predominant culture pops up. Hippies, goth, nerds, whatever.
2: Interactions within this subculture lead to the development of cultural markers, because that's basically what cultures do.
3: The predominant culture notices these markers clashing with the standards of the predominant culture.
4: The predominant culture spins an overly simplified narrative where the only thing linking the group is that they're trying to be "different", which conveniently centers the predominant culture in this narrative while eliding the very existence of the subculture.
5: Tedious jokes about people trying to be different ending up all looking the same come up, based on the misconception in part 4.

It gets old, as do closely affiliated patterns. For instance, step 4 nicely mirrors more than a few claims about "rebellion", where affiliation with one cultural group is reframed not as a positive affiliation but instead as just a reaction to another, and the term "rebellion" is selected largely to suggest that the negative reaction to the other cultural group doesn't have any legitimacy.

This can crop up in weird places. For instance, I have seen multiple people take extremely well to an academic environment, naturally fitting in with that culture and its values (starting with just being open to intellectualism and friendly to analytical perspectives), only for this to be condemned as rebellion against subcultural groups hostile to academia, and pretty consistently groups which have fairly directly opposed values, starting with veneration of believing what you're told by the proper authorities instead of having the temerity to think.

Goth is a particular fashion style that focuses heavily on dark colors, predominantly black and purple.

Fun fact, when I was just wearing dark clothes and growing my hair long (which I'd love to do again, but I work in a kitchen) adults would sometimes think I was a goth despite not actually wearing any gothic fashion (I just like to wear black, sue me).

In university my 'style' as far as most people thought of it was my glasses, the way I sit and talk, and the fact I had shoulder length curly hair (very loose curls, but still curls). Also the fact that I have skin horrifically pastypale enough to make Chinese ladies jealous.

So I think I might be a xenophile. Not just as in 'likes the alien', but as in 'sexually attracted to the alien'. I don't think I've asked out a single person of my ethnicity or nationality in my life, and tend to find them 'meh' compared to foreigners. There is at least some evidence that people who have been depressed are attracted to goth. So it's probably not totally spurious, but it's not nearly as simple as goths are all depressed. At the same time, the subculture has historically tended to be more open to the idea of mental illness, so there probably has been a bit of a support group aspect.

I do know I tend to carry an accompanying attitude of "Sometimes life sucks, sometimes you didn't do anything to cause it and you can't fix it, and you have to figure out how to manage with what you've got." I know that puts some people of because they see it as pessimistic or depressing. Personally I find it somewhat liberating.

The teenager aspect also probably has to do with that most adults tone things down one way or another to get to work, and it's less common to spend large amounts of time on your appearance unless you're in a profession where that's super important.

The problem is that Gothic was a pejorative word for a very wide set of styles in the high medieval period, the word being backwards applied from the fifteenth century onward.

Having an external buttress system or an interior one greatly changes the building design, St. Chappelle looks silly from the outside but has a massive unified interior and Notre Dame is smooth outside but a mess inside for having internal buttresses (leading to those dark alcoves.)

They do share groin vault as central design concepts, but renassiance churches often did as well.

Let's just say I think a lot of people are really good at knowing exactly how to solve situations they've never been in, or at assuming since they personally have always had the resources to avoid certain situations that anyone who's in a superficially similar situation can deploy the same resources to get the same result.

I've had a relatively high level of crap in my life for someone of my age and general location. I think it scares people a bit because I accept that a lot of it I really couldn't do anything about - or if I could the alternatives weren't clearly better.

See my occasional rant about the magic of boundaries. Not that I think they aren't a good concept in general, but that sometimes it's going to cost a lot to actually have them in a particular relationship and it can be a rational choice to decide that putting up with someone who's way overstepping is better than the alternative.

Let's just say I think a lot of people are really good at knowing exactly how to solve situations they've never been in, or at assuming since they personally have always had the resources to avoid certain situations that anyone who's in a superficially similar situation can deploy the same resources to get the same result.

How dare you besmirch the noble profession of Armchair General? I'm shocked, shocked I say! Well, not that shocked.

Sometimes the members of this forum get me to do weird things. Thanks to everybody's favourite nondeceitful infernally heritaged forum member I have decided to abandon my planned character for a campaign and actually make the Anonymous Wizard an actual D&D character (I've had the core idea for years, but could never get it to feel right).

Currently referred to as Nommy in out of character conversation, because he doesn't trust the party enough to give out his real name (I'm going to let them nickname him as they wish, he's going by Stephen at the moment), the Anonymous Wizard is on the run from [wizard university] because at his graduation the staff suddenly realised that the name he had given was a false one designed to make him not look like the son of a master forger. So Nommy BTh is on the run under an assumed name, currently Stephen Copperfield although previous aliases include Daniel Blackstone and Fredderick Grant, because the university wishes to interrogate him in order to find out how he managed to enroll under the name Peter Williams.

The build is just pretty straight Tiefling Wizard stuff, high scores in Intelligence, Charisma, and Dexterity, with the Charlatan background to represent growing up as the child of somebody who forged identities. While on the run he tries to right wrongs he sees and spread knowledge, especially the ability to cast spells.

Hihi, the funny/good thing about using the mobile skin for the forum is that it actually doesn't show custom avatars. I'm so used to seeing WarKitty as a Wolf-In-Sheep-Clothing, I guess I wouldn't recognize her should I ever use the regular skin.

There is at least some evidence that people who have been depressed are attracted to goth. So it's probably not totally spurious, but it's not nearly as simple as goths are all depressed.

One of the happiest people I've ever seen on Youtube is a Goth--Nika Harper. Don't think I've ever seen a picture or video where she's not smiling. Could be all an act, of course, but I think it would be difficult to maintain an act for that length of time.

Thanks, I'll be honest in that I wasn't expecting it. I was trying to complement people on their snazzy avatars in a funny way. I love it though, it fits perfectly with how I think of wizards and really is the kind of character I'd play, down to throwing on a dark cloak and face mask to try to remain anonymous.

Likewise. Actually, I need a new general avatar which looks good even when shrunk to 24 pixels so that I can use it all over the Internet. Sadly, what drawing skills I had managed to work up have rusted now, and if I find the time to start undertaking arts and crafts projects again, those will be physical craft projects, because I've got a lot of fantasy accessories I need to make for myself.

...
And now I started thinking about the Iron Avatarist threads of yore. Those were fun, and I even got a pair of trophies. Ahh, now I'm all nostalgic and wistful!

For some reason I changed my avatar to my face last year and I just can't be bothered to change it... I can't believe how I used to have the time and energy to care about seasonal avatars. :smallsigh:

The time half of that is easy to explain, that's just a product of having finished basic university level. The step into advanced education kinda hit me like a sledgehammer in slow motion. And the next step into the working life was just that all over again. Suddenly, the concept of spontanity has become hard to understand...

ION:
Today I got to be a very expensive babysitter. We have a bunch of guys over from another city to do a software upgrade to a rig, and both I and my team partner have to watch them, which mostly involves standing behind them as they talk about routine stuff which we neither understand nor are a part of. Although I did get to apply the sponginess of my brain to avert an impending disaster, so that's always something.

Rubber gloves
Sleeping pills

This means that (a) I am probably going to end up on some kind of watchlist and (b) I'm tempted to add "condoms" and "canning wax" to the list just to make it a more interesting watchlist to be on.

Yeah, seems to be 'hint/state that you want one and be somebody Honest Tiefling likes'. Alternatively you can take the simpler route of paying one soul or first born child, although not all avatarists accept both options. Unless the Avatar Adoption threads are still running? I honestly stopped checking after a couple of months of nothing I liked when I first signed up.

Does anyone know if there was ever any scandal involving one of the cast or crew? Because I noticed a definite... *ahem* easily identifiable symbol that became quite common in Europe around the early-mid 20th century.

If you mean how the actual Thunderbird logo for the United States 45th Infantry Division looks pretty close to a swastika then not that I can see. If you mean Nazi's in general that's prooobably because they fought a lot of Nazi's, so they're the bad guys so it's okay.

Otherwise I have no idea what you mean.

That... could be it, I suppose.
There was just a random building in the background with a great big swastika painted on it. Given that the show was made in 1960's Britain, I almost did a spit take when I saw it.

I mean, I recognize that it has a lot of different meanings, based on when and where you see it, but in western Europe? In the 1960's? The meaning is pretty unambiguous.

I'm pretty sure that doing a web search for "Thunderbirds Swastika", as I just did, would have come back with some relevant results if what you actually saw *was* one--it beggars belief that you'd be the first person in half a century to notice?

Believe me, that's the first thing I did. Anything interesting was drowned out by the 45th infantry - and probably the fact that this was pre-internet didn't help.
It's in the background, but front and center, so I can't be the first to notice. Usually, in fact, I'm the last to notice. Which means that it's probably not a swastika, but it's the same exact shape rotated 45 degrees. I should think a mere 20 years after the war, Britain would still have a bit of a sore spot there.

Unless I'm just poorly educated on the matter, and a 45 degree rotation is all that's required to render it inoffensive; I grant you that it's possible.
If anyone wants to check it out for themselves, and has access to the show, it's the fourth episode "Terror in New York City", at time stamp of 30:30. As Thunderbird 1 lands, it's right in front of a red building with a (not?) swastika on the side. In New York City, of all places!

Not at all. No injuries, low-speed accident, went pretty well considering. Won't be driving my car for a bit though; in addition to the damage to the lower part of the door, it juuuuust won't close fully at the top by like a couple centimeters. So it's kind ilof noisy to drive.

And most of all, im fortunate enough for it to not be anything not than a mild inconvenience for me.

I tried it once and didn't care for it. My problem had more to do with being hearing impaired when using a chat function (I think i this case we had Skype going). In any case, it loses out on a lot of what I enjoy from D&D, which is sitting around a table with friends.

Guy admitted fault (and was a really nice guy, too. Kind of young, first accident, very sorry), and given where it occurred and the damage to both cars it's pretty clear what happened regardless. Believe me, that's the first thing I did. Anything interesting was drowned out by the 45th infantry - and probably the fact that this was pre-internet didn't help.

There are plenty of things online about the dwarf who supposedly hanged himself in the backdrop of a shot from "The Wizard of Oz", so I don't think it being pre-Internet would make a difference. I don't have the original Thunderbirds series to verify it for myself (the one that comes free with Amazon Prime is the 2015 remake), so will just have to leave it be.
