i was under the understanding that one could cast a spell like magic missile, then cast a spell that has the feature "bonus action" like misty step. but i was told that i can only cast misty step if i only used a cantrip in the same round, not a spell of 1rst level or higher

is this true?

You can cast multiple spells in a round. If you cast a spell that isn't a cantrip you can't cast another as a bonus action.

Casting a second levelled spell as a reaction is fine or a couple of cantrip is fine. Abilities like action surge can let you cast a second levelled spell in a turn as neither are cast as bonus actions.

Casting a bonus action spell limits you to cantrips until your next turn.

Reaction spells like feather fall and counterspell dont trigger this limit but are subject to it, oddly enough.

Bonus Action (Casting Time)

A spell cast with a bonus action is especially swift. You must use a bonus action on your turn to cast the spell, provided that you haven’t already taken a bonus action this turn. You can’t cast another spell during the same turn, except for a cantrip with a casting time of 1 action.

The person you are talking to is correct.

During your turn you may cast;

Cantrip + bonus action cantrip
Cantrip + bonus action spell
Or
Spell

As a reaction you may cast a reaction spell, regardless of other actions that round, including casting counterspell to negate a counterspell cast by an enemy in response to one of your spells...

Note that RAW you cannot cast spell plus bonus action cantrip, though I know dms who choose to allow that

Please note the limitation only lasts for your turn. You can cast a reaction spell later in the round, as long as it’s no longer your turn. So you cannot, for example, cast Misty Step, move provoking an opportunity attack, and cast Shield on that opportunity attack, but you could cast Misty Step on your turn then cast Shield on the enemy’s turn.

Your bonus action spell can be a cantrip or a leveled spell. Your action spell must be a cantrip. You can do them in either order. Your action spell can never be a leveled spell if you will cast a bonus action spell that same turn in either order.

You can cast two non cantrip spells in a turn if you action surge as long as the each have a Casting Time of one Action.

my character is a conjuration specialist. could you use the 6th level class feature of benign transportation with misty step?... benign transportation is similar to a misty step except its not a bonus action and one can swap places with a willing participant.

It's not a spell, it's a feature.

What you are talking about is a class feature, not a spell, and the feature does not describe itself as being a sort of spellcasting either. So it's fine to use it and Misty Step in the same turn (preferably feature first, so you immediately regain its use by casting Misty Step).

With access to Action Surge, you can cast two spells in a turn.

The only limitation is this: If you cast a spell with your bonus action, the only other spells you can cast in the turn must be cantrips.

You cannot cast a reaction spell if you have cast a bonus action spell that turn. At least, by RAW.

Wrong, at least in the wording you put. :=)
I know you get the rules, but I feel compelled to react because as worded you may bring confusion to others (I feel you may have scrubbed a part of your quote by mistake).

From Aaron's post, only the very last part of his sentence is against the RAW.
As a reaction you may cast a reaction spell, regardless of other actions that round, including casting counterspell to negate a counterspell cast by an enemy in response to one of your spells...
Because indeed everything would happen on the same turn, since enemy caster would use his reaction on your turn.

But you can obviously cast a cantrip as an action, a spell as bonus action, and a spell as a reaction in the same round, as long as the latter happens on another turn (which should naturally be the case 99% of the time, be it a Counterspell when an enemy caster's turn comes and he tries something, or a Shield to help avoid attacks from an enemy brawler. Or even Counterspelling an enemy's Counterspell aimed at an ally's spell XD).

you can cast a cantrip and a spell of any level in a turn. i would allow a high level character to cast one other spell if hasted but i would put some restrictions on that.

The GodsCrawford has spoken. If you cast a spell with a casting time of a bonus action you can indeed cast a spell with a casting time of a reaction later in the the round.
