Well since the old thread seems to have fallen to page 10 over the summer, I thought I'd restart the thread instead of bumping the poor old one. I rather enjoyed perusing the old thread, so I'll see if I can start things off by posting my current desktop. Not hugely different from my old one, but here it is!

http://img205.imageshack.us/img205/4559/desktopws4.png

I've fallen in love with the Yahoo! Widget Engine, so I've got the weather widget, the calender, an RSS feed to keep up with the comics, and a notepad which is currently being used to list concerts. Also featured is my awesomely skinned Pidgin IM Client, which isn't usually that narrow or in that location. I just wanted to show the awesome skin.

As usual, please don't post huge unspoilered images and stretch the page.

I'm running Ubuntu over 2 1280x1024 LCDs. It'll be even sexier when compiz fusion matures a little (I wasn't happy with it over dual display).

From the shortcut to "Windows Desktop" I assume you're dualbooting? I've got Ubuntu/Windows XP/Windows Vista all on this PC, but I've gone from using almost all Ubuntu back to almost all XP 'cause of application support.

Oh and Amotis, that's epic cuteness.

The background is a partial image of Knight, Death and the Devil by Albrecht DÜrer, a 14th & 15th century artist who did woodblack engravings. It's one of my favorite artworks, I wish I could find a nice version of the full thing, but this is the best I have.

I tend to create my own desktop backgrounds combining abstract imagery combined with non-abstract words. This has been a long term (going on 10 years now), evolving, and non-prolific artistic project. Unfortunately, due to a hard drive failure, I lost some of the my works. Fortunately, they were not amongst my best. I hadn't bothered to back them up, as these were generally intended for private use, not public distribution, but here we are.

I doubt I need to say this, but click on the thumbnails for larger versions.

Currently, my most recent, most complex, and favorite:
http://usera.imagecave.com/fendrin/desktop/icth_words-technobabble.jpg.jpg (http://usera.imagecave.com/fendrin/desktop/words-technobabble.jpg)
(credit for words to Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Technobabble))

Other, simpler, creations that have graced my desktop from time to time, in approximate chronological order of creation:

Actually, I started reading xkzd today, from Pepz's post. I identified them first. It wasn't that hard, some of them are obvious (River, Kaylee, Inara, Book, Jayne), and then it was just a matter of picking the best fit (I originally thought Mal was Simon in one of his vests, but the messy hair was way off for Simon)

Well, and I am just that much of a geek.
