Thinking about an alternative rule for wizards, at least in a campaign where other spellbooks are rare.

When you get the ability to learn new spells on levelling up you must pick one of them from your chosen school. However you may chose from any class spell list.

The aim is to try and not shift the power level but to strengthen the subclass theme. Anything obvious I am missing?

That would be an elegant way to strengthen the subclass theme.

But how would you deal with bladesingers and war mages?

Might be a bit to powerful, but yeah, I really, really like this idea.

I let wizard learn any spell but they must find a person who knows that spell. i find that this balances it mostly. the other thing i do is make out of class spells cost money to learn on level up and X2 form scrolls, books, and other people outside of level up. once again mostly balances everything out.

As long as you're aware that healing spells tend to be necromancy. You could wind up with an 18th level wizard with unlimited healing.
