Key question is can they find them (optional DMG rules) in an AL game since the GM can fiddle with items?

Resupply definitely extremely limited (i.e., once you learn to use it and since you still have no proficiency you should have very few balls/powder left before it become an improvised weapon or maybe a club,) IMO. But since a person sincerely, quoting the DMG, asked I will again ask the question to the forum.

My first thought is the DM could award such but other AL DMs are going to say, “Um... not in this game.”

No. There's one musket obtainable in AL, you have only limited amount of ammo with no way to make more, and you can't ever get proficiency with it. Ever. It's in CoS.

Otherwise, GM is limited in how much he can "fiddle with items". DMG is not available AL resource.

I have a player who fights with a musket in AL. He's a forge cleric that makes the ammo with the class feature.

Pretty sure AL DMs cannot fiddle with items.

That being said, as said by JackPhoenix there is the one in CoS, and maybe in the future there will be an adventure with Giffs.

He can make bullets. Bullets are useless without the powder.

I suppose a conjurer could summon ammo as needed, so long as you kept one bullet and pinch of powder around to “copy”.

That is an interesting thought.

Likely doesn't work. "Pinch of black powder" isn't a single object, a single grain is. Also, hard to say what happens when you try to fire it... it disappears when it takes or causes damage, so there's a good argument that the charge is gone the moment you try to lit it.

DMG not an AL source. That is mind boggling. Guess I will talk with AL organizer how that works.

Also may explain why so many many Tier 2 players disappear into invitation (probable non-AL) only games. Constant flow of Tier 1 AL players but they usually “disappear” into rented rooms (not sure if AL or not) for campaigns or start new characters for continued AL games at FLGS.

That would be useful for that player’s character/interest. If I had more interest I would tempted start a campaign (non-AL) for a while.

My mistake: you *can* make more ammo for the CoS musket:

Page 88: Crypt 13
The musket provided here is unique, and may not be
replicated or repaired—though it is easy enough to craft
ammunition for it. A character proficient with smith’s
tools can spend 3 gp to craft 10 bullets and 35 gp to craft
enough gunpowder for 10 shots. Ammunition and
gunpowder can’t be purchased otherwise. The resulting
gunpowder is not suitable for any purpose other to fire
the weapon (i.e. NO explosives may be crafted, etc).
Characters can’t become proficient in this weapon.
NOTE: As a mundane item, the musket and bullets may
not be traded. Ownership must be established normally
by the end of the game session in which it is found, and
only by an adventurer that was played in that session.

Well if you don't follow AL you can just use the DMG rules.

Interesting. Gives tool proficiency another use.

Gracias.

Since only one player seems interested this is pretty much theory stuff. And that player has expressed preference to avoid CoS. Can’t have your cake and eat it too...

Right, though I have heard one AL DM who adjusted a weapon (to weaker simple from martial) according to player who ended up with it. Hearsay until confirmed...

Not terribly interested in Giffs until the whole Renaissance/gunpowder conversation came up. Dump the British accent/monocle aspect (make French or Italian) and it becomes suddenly more interesting to me. Now I am interested in Giffs as NPCs, still not sure about PCs though.

So far, stuck with AL to avoid certain DM invitations (oh, sorry, I only play AL right now,) and “work” (did that in Sacramento in 1970s and Seattle in the 1980s/1990s) of making my own world as a DM. If the wife starts playing again 🤞🏼 then I might consider a non-AL world/game as DM.
