If a BBEG has the spell Calm Emotion and fears a PCs Rage ability can the NPC as part of a party of “baddies” use that to take away the Barbarian’s signature ability?

Thinking a resource drain if a Barbarian tends to wildly use Rage in a non-trivial dungeon crawl where multiple encounters might occur with little chance to rest and recover Rages.

Example, raid on BBEG base (rescue, assassinate, recover item BBEG wearing) that has several encounters where the Barbarian in a party might have but might use not need Rage to defeat mooks like guards, sentries, wandering animal type monsters.

Thinking of a BBEG duo with saves vs IN and CH such as an Evil Bard and Sorc or Wizard.

If you use the 'make a target indifferent' effect, the rage ends pretty soon, as the barbarian ceases to attack. It could work, but Hold Person would do the even better, albeit with a wis save rather than cha.

Right but looking to make awareness about CH and IN dumps more noticeable,

So you're looking to deliberately target a PC to teach them a lesson?

No, I am saying a smart BBEG will sometimes play the odds.

Fear the Barbarian who trashed your minions, weaken him/her in/before the final confrontation. BBEGs fight to win.

Technically Calm Emotion only ends the rage if the conditions for maintaining the rage aren't met due to it. If the Barbarian is not hit or doesn't hit for two turns, the rage ends. Calm Emotion stop the Barbarian from engaging hostilities, so it's half of the job.

while its not RAW, I'll allow the spell to stop rage instantly. It is literally calming the person down.

Calm emotions varies from very hard to almost impossible to use effectively in combat. If any of the Barbarians allies and BBEG's allies are still fighting, it will break the effect. And that's very likely unless all the PCs fail their saves, and the BBEG yells out some orders to his own guys to stop fighting at the same time (or they all fail their saves).

Better to use Hold Person, even if it's a Wis save instead of a Cha save.
