Is it too different from the original Ember Guard or is it within reason?

It's fairly close. You could also try a still from the fire titan at the end of the Disney Hercules movie. I mean, I hate the movie, but the fire monster at the end is pretty spot on. Googling it led me to this fan art:

Color of the fire is not why I want to switch. I'm just in the mood for a lava/rock golem rather than a fire/rock golem.
