Enemies abound or charm monster?

I like the idea of a non concentration spell but is the charm effect garbage?

It depends a lot on your DM, and what s/he allows you to do with skill checks. One DM could make Charm Person extremely effective, while another could make it nearly worthless, and both could well stay within the letter of the rules.
