This thingy here (https://www.navytimes.com/off-duty/movies-video-games/2018/05/31/top-gun-sequel-starts-filming-on-nas-north-island/)

The showcased planes will be Super Hornets, of all things.

I guess this works for a narrative better than a Lightning II, for a bunch of reasons, but I am a little disappointed they aren't showing the new gear off, and there are only a few Reapers around anyway.

Lightnings are stealthy and have no second seater
So no Goose to splatter on your cockpit glass
And fighting MiGs will be more like
"Here are some guys out there... yeah they don't see us... okay, no we won't show ourselves... We'll just tell them to leave... yeah they're going"

And what are super hornets good at?

And what are super hornets good at?

They're high AoA (angle of attack, meaning they can point their nose in a different direction than they're flying) Strike Fighter (self escorting ground attack). They also have the most up to date avionics and EW systems outside of the 5th gen planes, IIRC.

Sounds like a fairly solid choice then. Both for quality of the jets and dramatic effect for any combat scenarios they might have.

Yeah I'm expecting a lot of acrobatics and that they'll be using the twin seat F-18F so they have have the copilot.

When are we finally getting Citizen Kane 2?! Or a remake, I would take that too.

Haven't you seen The Room?

I certainly appreciate the sentiment. Why make a big sequel to one of the highest grossing movie ever is an obvious question, but why ruin a masterpiece with a sequel is a difficult one.

I reckon a lot of dollars will be made by it. Furthermore, it's probably the Pentagon's hope that it will bump up the Navy's recruitment, and even the USAF's. There is a shortage on pilot recruitment lately, after all. Personally, I would have made a Desert Storm movie with F-15E's, but we wouldn't be able to call it "Top Gun," which is a Navy program.

Of course, I question the reasoning behind using Super Hornets as a recruiting tool. The plane and its continued procurement is a bit of a headache inducing mess. Hypothetically the Navy would be phasing them in favor of newer F-35Cs, but between the Reaper's low production (I think the USN is the only one buying that variant, keeping its price high) and the aging Bugs, they're still buying Rhinos. This means the Marines, whose Asses Ride In Navy Equipment will have a more advanced air force than the actual USN. :smallsigh:

I don’t think the navy deploys a lot of drones.

Though a drone centric top gun style joke movie has a trailer

Slim chance they might actually make mroe of an attempt to us MiGs, then (old ones, of course, wouldn't wanna look too stupid being outflown by the most recent ones... But I guess why would a narrgatie of good 'ol UA boys beating the [whoever they think is a suitably marketable enemy, possibly aliens, I dunno] with their ol' reliable kit I suppose.)

Really, I'd just settle1 for them using the same enemy aircraft scene to scene.

Plus side, maybe we can have Hot Shots III since we haven't actually had a proper, good, parody movie since... *looks it up* Ye gods, the mid 1990s?!

1I have never watched mire than the dogifght protions of Top Gun, and aside from the first time when Dad showed me as a child, I was too busy laughing at the F-5s and A4s...)

Ok, lets see....

Top Gun, the 2018 version:

Pele "Maverick" Park, the 2018 Top Gun MUST have a Non-White(''non-classic American looking'') woman star. She is an Asian/Pacific Islander from Hawaii, who (sort of in the watered down 2018 way) does not follow the rules. She is a super hot shot pilot, just because she is, and in fact she is super at anything she does, because that is who she is.

And her friend/co-pilot Shanice ''Chick" Washington. She is the must have black co star. She plays the hard and tough woman from the horrible inner city.

The (sort of lame rated G) happy hand holding relationship character of Charlie Blackwood. A weak, spineless, wisp of a male who is totally submissive to Pele. He teaches at the school, but, of course, Pele already knows everything as that is who she is.

So they go through some movie time just randomly showing characters and air planes with no real story.

Then we have Pete get assigned to Top Gun. Of course, because she is who she is, she is the greatest pilot ever. They do the mock air battle and she does the Amazing Left Turn Maneuver and wins the game with one billion points...more then anyone else ever won.

Then the games are over....the Evil Bad Guys (all male, wink wink) are on the attack! From North Nowhere-to-Offend-Astand, they send their Stealth Unmanned Drones to Blow Up America!

And only Pele, with her Amazing Left Turn Maneuver can both find the drones and shoot them down. And she does, amazingly, shooting down the last one just 00:01 seconds from it blowing up America.

Then Pele flies her plane over and...er...non violently arrests the Bad Guys and turns them over to the World Court to pay for their Evil.

Bam...highway to the danger zone(2018)

If they wanted they could get MiGs. I don't know if the USAF still has any captured ones leftover. They might be able to rent some as well.

Also, I say MiGs but really a Su Flanker would be more applicable in a modern setting. :s

The reason why the Reapers don't fly is because they became self aware and now identity as attack helicopters. There's a subplot of trying to get them off of the LHAs.

Murica. TBF I kept forgetting Hornets existed at all. They don't have the zeitgeist the way F-14s, F-15s, and A-10s seem to.

Looks like there won't be any drones for sure.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O_qJ2ne3OiI

More stuff from lurking other forums:
One redditer suggested that an F-35 will get struck by lightning and become self aware, and Tome Cruise has to shoot it down in his old school hornet before it drops its nuke. (This is the plot to Stealth)

Someone else mentioned that he could be training new F-35 pilots in an old hornet, like using a back line fighter for training.

ALIS (https://www.lockheedmartin.com/en-us/products/autonomic-logistics-information-system-alis.html) goes rogue, won't order Reaper parts until someone treats it like the beautiful goddess it is.

<<Me would Kickstart support this project>>
Also, Tom Cruise appears in a tutor cameo, is humiliated by the heroine during her very first flying lesson, acts like a sexist pig, and then dies for no particular reason.

Tries to show off his skills by buzzing the tower, crashes into it dying instantly.

Any movie where Tom Cruise('s character) dies is a good movie.

Except maybe Edge of Tomorrow. It's very satisfying in the beginning, but he keeps coming back too quickly.

Since drones have been mentioned, I would have imagined the demand for pilots was tanking, generally?

If the sequel doesn't feature Sterling Archer, I'll be disappointed.

And about pilots, no, there's still a demand for pilots. Drones need pilots, too. There's no cockpit for them to sit in, but they still fly the plane, albeit remotely. And I don't think there's any drones that are equipped for dogfights.

I'm pretty sure they're working out (http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-36650848) the kinks in that.

Either way, it seems bizarre that the Army would be looking to recruit folks based on a movie where you sit in the same cockpit as the plane you're flying. I don't see the cost/benefit ratio to that approach improving over time.

At least in the current generation, drone pilots are not like normal pilots. One of the main reason for this is the connection. These guys sit in a sweaty container back in the States while controlling a drone in Afghanistan over satellite up-link. This means a several second delay and frequent signal loss. Just keeping a plane airborne with four seconds delay would be challenging as it is, but waiting for the connection to repair for half an hour would definitely put the plane in the ground. This means that while the drone pilots get all the responsibility, repercussions and PTSD normal pilots get, they don't actually fly the plane. It's more like they interpret the images and sensor data and command the plane, while it does the job of staying in the air. As drones get more advanced I would suspect this is the area they get better in the quickest, so even if the connection thing gets sorted out completely the drones themselves will probably stay in control of the steering for the foreseeable future.

Oh no, absolutely not. The USAF has 1000s of planes that will still be in service for decades. The demand for manned aircraft pilots will probably stay constant for some time. The USN isn't as far as the USAF is in terms of drone deployment, and they are ordering lots of F-35s and F-18E/Fs, so they definitely want pilots. They even started equipping their carriers for F-35Cs, including special briefing rooms for nuclear missions.

I would throw them a bucket of money to see Tom Cruise dancing in a bald prosthesis and fat suit again, like he did in Tropic Thunder.
