You smell the dust kicked up by the rain rapidly approaching you. You haven't seen the wolves and their worg leader in the last hour, but you can hear them.

Maybe your caravan got caught in a flash flood. Maybe you made a wrong turn at Albert's Key. Maybe your previous party was attacked by wolves. How did you get there?

Suddenly, the dense brush you have been fighting though parts, and you find yourself at the edge of a clearing. Is that a tower? A ruined one, but the lower levels look intact, certainly safer than being surrounded by wolves out in the open with this lightening.

Suddenly, you are not alone. The gusting wind making the plants wave and your focus on the tower hid them from you until flurry of sheet lighting above lights the surrounding area and you notice them as they notice you. Several strangers, all haggard looking, all gazing at you and the tower. Some of them look a bit...rough...but they aren't goblins or orcs.

However this terrible day/week began, you have all stumbled upon the tower clearing at more or less the same time, as darkness and rain begin to fall as thunder and howls echo around you...

For right now, these strangers look friendlier than those wolves sound and that lightening is awful close....

KaBAM!! A flash and a tree falls split in two by a bolt just behind you. You feel the hair on your arms and head start to stand on end.... by sudden mutual consent, all of you move towards the tower's door. Introductions will wait for inside...

Ellis had been tracking the Owlbear for days. Her hunting party had all been slain by the beast, but not before nearly killing it and leaving it with a nasty, bleeding wound. It could not have made it far. Smelling of dirt and sweat, Ellis had not stopped to bathe, and only to rest a minimal amount, following the beast's trail of blood. She was determined to fetch a new trophy, perhaps craft a dagger out of it's beak or claws. Covered in dirt and crouched down, she hid as the trail led to a large bush. She slowly peeled it back to search, but found the trail had abruptly ended and there was a large clearing with a strange and mysterious tower.

Fenrir is panting and sweaty when he reached the clearing. He was headed between towns when the bay of wolves filled him with fear. He had panicked, knowing he was no match for one wolf, let alone a pack. He pushed his way through the brush, swinging his dagger at the limbs as he ran. Fenrir had not been this afraid since that time he picked a guard's purse.

Now, with the realization he was neither alone nor safe, he rushed for the tower. He hoped he would be the first through the doors, though he was smaller than some of the others.

And how did Fenrir end up in the woods? Why was he moving between towns? any thing to run from?

Hearing the sound of wolves, Ellis briefly considers changing her quarry, but realizes she is too tired to take on an entire pack. She looks around and concludes the tower might provide sufficient shelter while she recovers. She makes her way towards it and makes plans to continue her hunt later.

Harnarel

Harnarel walked quietly and calmly through the woods. He knew there was some risk being out here alone, and then there was the storm. The storm was part of the reason to be out here though. To be one with the storm, not hiding from it. Seeing the rain close, he paused and took out his poncho and put it on and then resumed his trek until he saw a tower ahead. Interesting, he wondered how old it was and who it belonged to.

You all push into the tower, lighting on your hills. You are in a dark 10 by 10 room. There is a passage deeper into the tower opposite the door you came in through, but you need to light a torch to see more and get a better look at the strangers in the room with you.

Ellis enters the antechamber and scans for threats measuring the other people up. She remains silent, gripping her bardiche. Tall and solid, only the elf stands above her, but he looks like a twig by comparison. Her skin is a deep olive and you can clearly see her elven lineage as her ears are in full view under her utilitarian pixie cut. Something about her appearance seems off, however, as here hair is start white and her eyes are violet, but pale, almost as if she has cataracts. It does not seem to impair her senses, however, and in fact seems to amplify them as her somewhat alien visage takes in the surroundings. She is covered in dirt, sweat, and blood, though most of it is not her own.

This wasn’t the beginning. This was just another long, cold night in the dark for Rolf. The enemy was new, but perhaps less cruel or cunning.
The orcs had been attacking black glass redoubt for generations. Too numerous and spread out above ground to really put down, they had been at somewhat of a stalemate for the last decade or so... the orcs with their numbers and the Dwarves with their fortress.
It wasn’t even a serious concern until a new warchief took power.
Suddenly, supply deliveries stopped. These things tend to happen on occasion, but after a month scouting parties started to return injured, with tales of orc ambushes. Then they stopped returning.
Meetings were held, new tunnels dug. Some to find new routes to the surface the orcs didn’t know about, and others to try finding iron, coal and other more practical riches. Blackglass was built over a gemstone mine, and it only took two years of harrying before steel became a valuable commodity.
Then the orcs started using disease.
It was a horrible year. So many dead, in their beds instead of with honour on the battlefield... and the children...
the attacks didn’t stop. What used to be a once a year or so event became an unrelenting tide. Wave after wave tested their bulwark, forcing the few clerics on hand to choose between praying to heal the wounded or the sick.
On the first day of what should have been the great mushroom harvest, a stranger appeared. “Worship my master, and promise yourselves to him, and he will spare your people.”
The dwarves were taken aback by the incredulity of such a man, praying on the desperate. They escorted him from the redoubt and told him to prosthelytize to the orcs.
“Thrice more I shall return, and then your fortress will fall.” Spit and insults followed.

It was a year before he came again. Things had gotten worse. Women had to start manning the wall while their brothers were on the mend, and the orcs had started using poison as well. Children were going unattended, and while food and water stores were plentiful, leathers and metals were getting harder to find.
He appeared in the market, drawing a crowd. “Pray to my master, and he will deliver you from these orcs!” He cried. He carried several scrolls, with blasphemous teachings scrawled nearly in Dwarven.

He was again shown the door, and an arrow followed him this time, though the dwarf who shot it was reprimanded for wasting ammunition.

That winter, the attacks stopped, though when spring came, the thaw did not bring its usual torrent of fresh water to fill the dwarven reserves.
Nay, in fact, the water from above slowed to a trickle, leaving the dwarves dependant on old, deep wells and a single underground river.
And in spring, the attacks began again.

When the stranger came again, he found a few dwarves willing to listen. The council had decreed that each family would open their crypt, go in and retrieve their ancestral weapons, and reforge what could be re used to turn the battle. The orcs had taken to coating their own blades in acid, which rendered them brittle and unwieldy, but likewise ate away at the armaments of their opponents.
A small cult began to form, though again the stranger was escorted from the fortress by a pair of guards- this time one old enough that his beard was white and his eyes rheumy.

The blasphemous teachings talked of warfare and sacrifice, of tactics so vile they would make one’s allies turn on them. A small group of Dwarves began practicing in the now derelict mines, and with the crypts open they found a great many materials to use.

The last time the stranger came, the orcs had breached the walls. Dwarves lay dead in the tunnels and warrens, and rivers of blood pooled in drainage ditches.
The small cult had retreated into the mine, and made ready a surprise for the orcs.

When the savage war bands finished putting down the city and moved on looking for survivors, what they found was a horde of dwarven dead, hungry for their flesh. For the first time in half a decade, the orcs were truly afraid. Their disease and poison were ineffective, and their flesh was tender and edible.
The stranger looked on with a smile as the army of the dead carved through the redoubt, having to slosh through blood ankle high to attack the next barbarian.
Most of the new army poured through the keep and up to the surface, paying back twice over the debt in blood the orcs incurred. Some lingered to hunt the remnants through the underground, and sickening sounds carried through the tunnels.

Retreating back to the mine, the stranger ordered the remaining few dwarves to gather what supplies they could and make for the new tunnel to the surface. The keep was a damned place, now, and they would find no peace here.
As Rolf finished packing his things, trying to keep safe a small portrait of his fallen children and the wife who was right now eating an orc’s larynx, a sudden quake rocked the tunnel. Rocks began to fall, and he ran while his companions tried to find safety.
The shaking got worse, and entire tunnels began collapsing, burying members of the cult, undead, and the remaining, hiding orcs alike. Rolf made it to an air shaft just as the tunnel he was using began to cave in, taking two other cultists with it. He looked for the stranger, his mentor, to find he had vanished. Rolf climbed into the air vent with only one thought ringing through his brain;
Where had the orcs gotten explosives?

Coughing, soot stained, exhausted from hauling all he could carry up an air shaft, Rolf collapsed as soon as he reached the surface.
In his dream, he saw his new master. “You have been delivered from the orcs. My part in the bargain is complete, and you belong to me.”

He woke to a torrent of wind and rain, soaking him through. Leaves entangled with the mud in his beard. Rolf began looking for a path, a game trail, or any signs of habitation. Shell shocked, he didn’t even hear the wolves. He did, however, see the tower.

Looking more dead than alive, with his hair matted by mud and twigs, his armor stained by soot and rain, Rolf headed for the tower.

Gold just curses as he trudges the muddy patches that is, well, everywhere with his light imbued holy symbol acting as a torch. Ever since the skies decided to be sad and cloudy. Ever since it's sorrow became freaking rain and thunder. Ever since the separation from his caravan because of the rain and thunder. And now, he is drenched from head to toe and everything he has is soggy. Great. Now he have to find some kind of shelter and dry his clothes before he catches a cold. The halfling cleric of the Sun Goddess looks up the skies and glares at the vast grey expanse.

"You KNOW, after all I did and pray for you, at least show your disciple where he can rest tonight."

The light on his holy symbol suddenly flares and reveals a tall dark slab not too far away.

"I take back what I said. I love you, my dear sun goddess."

Gold hurries towards the dark slab. He finds an opening which he slips in, clutching his body and shivering but unknown to him, his light expires on his way in.

"Woooooooo, cold. Well, at least it is not raining in here but why can't I see anything? My light must have gone out somehow."

Using the wall as support, the halfling reignites his light and finds out that there are already occupants who are glaring at each other and now are glaring at him. He steps back, pointing at the people that are there.

"M-m-mo-Monsters!"

He runs to a corner and curls up into a ball.

Rolf spares a glance to the other misbegotten souls that ended up in this forgotten redoubt.
“Elves be you? Ye be late, if you came to help. There’s orcs about. Cruel things.”
Hearing a howl, he looks towards the door. “Death nae be done with me.”
Keeping his eyes on the night, he fingers the hilt of his battleaxe. “I be Rolf Cracktooth. If I don’t make it.” He nods.

Dwarf's CSI check.

The human died a few hours ago. He has an arrow in his shoulder and another in in his lower abdomen, both shots from behind. The shots were at least 3 hours apart, the shoulder first. The shoulder missed the clavicle artery but pierced the shoulder blade. Would have rendered the left arm useless.

The lower arrow missed the renal and hepatic arteries, but is lodged in the liver causing a persistent slow bleed and organ shut down. He lived for hours after he was shot, entered this tower, collapsed, crawled to the corner, and died in pain.

The upper arrow chipped when it hit the bone, but the lower one is still usable if you want to recover it.

He is wearing a silver chain with a small silver key and an amulet. The amulet has a square set in the middle and is encircled by what you instantly recognize as necromancer runes. It calls to you. Do you take it? Do you put it on?

Gold parts his fingers to "open a window" to peek through. Seeing the group not inclined to mean harm by their introduction and body language, the halfling stands a bit shakily then to his full height, reverting to his inquisitive and cheery nature.

"Huh, you talked? Not like monsters. It's weird because just now you looked like one. Those things are quite savage with their gleaming teeth, big bodies and monstrous eyes. I am glad that was over with. You gave me such a fright there. That was one of the scariest moments of my life, not counting the lightning and thunder outside. Now, that I can see you better, you lot are not so bad after all so I am going to tell you my name. I'm Gold. Yes, gold as in the mineral. Before anyone questions why I am named like this, don't bother. If you are insistent, forward your future inquiries to my parents who named me."

The cleric inches to the deceased body.

"Before you slice the body into pieces, let me send my prayers first."

Instead of praying, the halfling moves in a bizarre animations, gestures and movements as if dancing (Think of it as similar to Yuna's sending). When it is done, his body relaxes as he steps back and gestures to give his signal.

"Okay. Continue your thing."

The body is of a young, fair, human lad. And he seems to be carrying a library! He has 5 books in his backpack. He may have wanted to ditch it, but the arrow in his shoulder was pinning the pack to his shoulder so he may not have been able to remove it even if he had wanted too. He also has various gear.

(GM intrusion)
As the half elf undertakes the grim task of 'field dressing' (gutting) the body, the rest of you crowd around thumb though the books while the Elf's light spell provides light for both tasks.

Out from the driving rain springs a chariot. It isn't the best chariot, a bit on the small side, but the reins are covered in little silver bells and it IS pulled by a fully grown lion, so there's that. Standing astride the vehicle is a tall, well built, if pale, (steps) an elf of good breeding wearing a simpl(e), if nice, set of (wet) adventurer's clothes and a very well made backpack.

Entari grins as his vehicle pulls over near at the Elf with the dagger. He raises a hand in greeting, not seeming to be greatly worried about the rain soaking his head scarf and matting down his lion's fur.

What comes from his lips next are a string of sing-songy, beautiful words that sound more like a babbling brook than actual sentence.

Hail, Brother, well met! May the light of a thousand suns kiss your feet! Are you trying to resurrect this servant?

He calls down from the chariot (over) to the Elf holding the knife.

>>Here is the introduction description I sent him by email.:

However you came to be by yourself and lost in wolf infested woods..... there is good news and bad news.

Good news: You no longer are being followed by wolves and you can no longer hear their howls.
Bad news: The wolves are probably hiding form the lightening storm you are out in, and even if they were howling wouldn't be able to hear it over the roar of the gale.

Good news: none of the lighting or falling trees have hit you....yet.
Bad news: A few million of the raindrops have. The cold will kill you if the lighting doesn't.

Good news: Hey! there is a ruined tower over there. The lower floors are intact.
Bad news...maybe? There is a light in there. it is occupied. Well, at least it is occupied by something that needs a light....

You have to risk it.
You don't bother calling out. The occupants wouldn't be able to hear you anyway. Hope they are friendly.

Good news! They aren't orcs! There is an Elf holding a glowing dagger aloft and reading from a book...and a halfling holding a book, and a gnome holding a book...and a dwarf holding a book...and an elvish-ish woman kneeling on the the floor...harvesting organs from a corpse.... while she is surrounded by people reading books....what foul ritual is this?

Maybe you should back out of here..

Lighting flashes behind you throwing your shadow on the the wall. They all look towards you...

Oh, right! Human rites demand local burials, or some such thing. Better to let Nature reclaim what is discarded, but try explaining that to the Quicks

He laughs merrily again, patting his brother elf on the shoulder before sidling past,

Well, enjoy yourself. I am going to relax with some calligraphy while dry off.

He mutters over his shoulder as he slides inside, disturbing no one.

Once inside the little tower, a wave of his hand dusts off a nearby spot on the floor and sits, setting his bag next to him and untying the scarf from around his head, revealing firey red, raw looking scars from his right eyebrow up his forehead.

It's darker than a Shade's taint in here...

Hmm? Oh, my father's library had a book about it. There are many old, dark places where texts and that are written in it. And we can't help but love things with deep history, yes?

He smiled, pulling his quil from the paper finally and looking the resulting "character" over like a jeweler appraising a new ring. Then, he returned to the process.

Hundreds of small mice and rats pour thought he hole and scatter throughout the lower tower, across feet, up pant legs, harmlessly and confusedly seeking safety. Most of them ricochet around until they escape out into the storm.

Once the hundreds of little vermin are collected, the strange elf looks around and pulls a scroll from his side case. Unfurling the dark parchment and rearranging the broom into a set of scribe's glasses, he examines the jet black inscriptions and bone-white diagrams, nodding to himself before crouching over the pile of corpses and beginning to incant in the low, guttural language Harnarel had been curious about earlier, shaking the parchment about this way and that over the pile.

That done, he grunted a few choice command, causing the cadre of rodents to shake themselves violently and dislodge the water soaked into their furs. Another command and the hundreds of skittering corpses clamored up the Elf's legs and to hit shoulders, where their little claws held onto one another in a kind of macabre fur half-cape, insulating their master from the nipping night.

Having finished what he'd set out to do, Entari slid his scribe's glasses into a pocket and headed back to check on his backpack.

Not sure if I can apply this as a use of stealth, since standing in light (not that it is super relevant, since most monsters have darkvision anyway), but I want to try to conceal myself as much as possible. Obviously I cannot hide my form, but it is sort of like how cops shine spotlights at potential shooters so they can't fully make them out. Same principle if possible, using the dwarf as a decoy presence in front of me, with my bardiche extended out overhead. My stealth is abysmal in this armor anyway, not fully trying to hide though, so not sure how it would work.

Seeing that the other...people, were moving forward, Entari shoulders his pack, takes another bite from the sandwich he'd finished preparing from his rations, and shuffles a few feet ahead, just past the doorway he'd set ablaze earlier.

After another hundred feet the hall opens to a 25 x 25 room. An intact and closed door is on the opposite wall. A small stone chest is built into the floor in the center of the room.

Ellis scans the room, looking over the floor, the chest, the walls, and even the ceiling, leading with her bardiche first. As she does so, she grabs some trail rations from her backpack and starts eating to help her concentrate.

I'm taking 20 on perception, so a 28 is my result, barring any modifiers

Gold let the others do the scouting and begins stuffing rations into his mouth to fill his stomach.

Yep, innocent looking stone chest in the middle of the room. Interlinked chain motif design running round it. You are too far to tell if it is cemented to the floor or carved into it.

Ellis approaches the chest cautiously and attempts to push open the lid using her bardiche while keeping her distance. Assuming that does not trip any traps and the chest does not suddenly come to life, she approaches more casually and works to open it, looking to collect any spoils within.

[roll0] vs Ellis (dam) [roll1]

[roll2] vs the dwarf (dam) [roll3]

Just as the thought "nearly universally trapped" forms in the dwarf's mind, Ellis disturbs the lid, triggering darts to fire from the holes in the chain pattern.

"If you would like, I can take a look at that now," Fenrir says as begins to approach, taking every precaution not to trigger a different trap. He will work his way up until he can examine the chest in detail.

“Just the chest be trapped, and not anymore. That sort of box usually holds things for rituals.”
Rolf looks at the spot on his armor where the dart bounced off.
“Seems they expected thieves, not dwarven steel.”

Rolf will check the cloth, see if there’s anything written on it or wrapped in it

There is a rune like symbol in the middle.

Knowledge arcane and religion.

The gnome strains, and the door pops open. A bit more force and it creeks open wide enough to see.

From the glow of your lights you find a 30 x 30 room. A similar door is on the far wall.

The only other object of interest in this chamber is a
statue at the far end just to the left of the far door. It resembles a sarcophagus
standing upright, except that the head of the
figure carved upon its lid looks distorted and
seems to have tendrils instead of hair. A pair of
batlike wings extends from its temples.

Gold eyes glows as he chants the detect magic spell and scans the room.

As Gold lays his gaze on the artifact the eyes flash open green, the hair animates and the mouth hisses releasing a mind peircing shriek.

Will saves all around.

The sarcophagus splits open revealing a vaugly humaoid body with oversized hands. The crypt guardian steps forward unfurling the second set of wings on it's back.
