I like how Dungeons & Dragons Online gives each character 4 action points to spend on enhancements between levels. This increases the customization options dramatically for any character build. Is there any sort of analogous system to this in either 3.5 or Pathfinder? I've been looking through alternative/option rules from Unearthed Arcana and Unchained, but so far haven't found anything similar. Or is that something that DDO pulled out of one of the later editions (4th or 5th)?

My primary interest is for an E6/P6 style game, where the level cap unfortunately cuts off a lot of the customization options in order to keep the power levels down. I'd love to re-introduce some of the prestige classes as enhancement groups, for instance, as a way to ramp up the customization options again without necessarily adding class levels to do so.

I've not seen anything, however if you find something please let us know!

I don't think DDO has this mechanic you're speaking of. Having played the game myself, could you link to the wiki (http://ddowiki.com) where this mechanic is?
