I'm building a fourth level Healing domain Cleric, and i'm trying to figure out a good stat balance. Right now, I plan to go with Variant human, putting the points from that into Strength and Con, Observant feat for Wis +1, and my 4th level stat gain goes into Wisdom.

Starting Array:

13, 10, 13, 15, 10, 10

Variant Human Boosts:

14, 10, 16, 15, 10, 10

Observant boost:

14, 10, 16, 16, 10, 10

Level 4 boost:

14, 10, 16, 18, 10, 10

Resulting in 14 strength, for +2 damage and to hit and allows me to wear Chain Mail for a respectable 16 AC, or 18 if I use a shield.

10 Dex, not very much to say here.

16 Con, for +3 to HP per hit die, allowing a very solid cleric that can contribute in a fight.

18 Wis, as far as I can tell this is the highest possible bonus obtainable at this point with the books that I own.

10 Int, not much to say about this.

10 Cha, not much to say here.

Is this the "Optimal" array? should my Str be higher by lowering my Con? Would higher Cha be useful?

Comments and suggestions desired.

Some oddities in your arrays:

13, 10, 13, 10, 15, 10 (assuming you meant wis not int) still has 2 points to spend.

14, 10, 16, 10, 15, 10 increases your con by 3 instead of 1

I would either drop a stat to 8 to get the +3 con bonus or put the two points into str at the start to allow plate mail without penalty.

Point Buy- 15 Str, 12 Dex, 13 Con, 8 Int, 15 Wis, 8 Cha. Put your two +1s in Wis and Con an grab the Heavy Armor Mastery feat which adds a +1 to Str

So you'd start 16 Str, 12 Dex, 14 Con, 8 Int, 16 Wis, 8 Cha. Take +2 Wis at level 4 and Warcaster at level 8.

I like having a reasonable Dex, but if you don't care, you could start 16 Str, 10 Dex, 15 Con, 8 Int, 16 Wis, 8 Cha. Take +2 Wis at level 4 and Res(Con) at level 8.

Or just start 16, 16, 16, 8, 8, 8 lol

Ok, thanks for pointing out the mistakes in my calculations. Would you recommend something like this instead:

Starting Array:

13, 12, 15, 8, 15, 8

Variant Human Boosts:

14, 12, 16, 8, 15, 8

Observant boost:

14, 12, 16, 8, 16, 8

Level 4 boost:

14, 12, 16, 8, 18, 8

This point-build works, and I realise now that Dex is key for a lot of saving throws. What do you think of these revisions?

I'd start with at least 15 in Str to be able to wear heavy armor. Or play a Dwarf.

I stand by my 16 Str, 10 Dex, 15 Con, 8 Int, 16 Wis, 8 Cha with Heavy Armor Mastery at level 1, +2 Wis at level 4, and Res(Con) at level 8

You'd have a 20 AC with Plate + Shield and with the damage reduction, you'd be super tough to kill which is what you want.

Problem with dumping Cha and Int is it's going to be a relatively small party, so I need to be halfway competent at more than Wis-based skills.

I wouldn't be too concerned with Int and Cha saves.

Not wanting to dump them for roleplay reasons is one thing, but if it's for the skill bonuses, +/-1 isn't going to matter nearly as much as whether you're proficient or not.

I suppose. Ok, so A better final array would look something like this:

16, 10, 16, 8, 18, 8
