View Full Version : Ways to raise critical hit confirmation

Besides the obvious "raise your attack bonus", what are some ways one can improve only the confirmation part of a critical hit?

While spells are ok, I'm mostly looking for mundane ways to do it

So far:


- Confound the Big Folk - "Knee Striker" ability gives +4 to confirm if you occupy the same square as a creature two sizes larger
- Murderous Intent - auto confirm crits vs favored enemies
- Power Critical - stackable +4
- Victor's Luck - reroll confirmation
- Vow of Vengeance - +4 profane bonus on rolls to confirm critical threats against favorite enemy (vile feat)
- Instinctive Consummator - expend your psionic focus to automatically confirm a critical hit.


- Incarnum Blade 2 - +2 to confirmation
- Warblade 3 - Int to confirmation

- Abyssal Bloodirom - Material PlH - +4 to confirmation
- Blessed - +1 property MIC - Auto confirm vs Evil creatures
- Bloodlust Shield crest - Forge of War - +4 to confirmation
- Flesh Ring of the Scorn - Auto-confirm 3/day but take damage to activate
- Pitspawn - DMG2 Weapon Template - +2 to confirmation

- Bless/Corrupt Weapon - Auto confirm vs Evil/Good creatures
- Distort Weapon - Just like Corrupt Weapon, but 3.0 material.
- Zealot Pact - Auto confirm under special circumstances
- Sense Weakness - Auto confirm a single critical threat.
- Exacting Shot - Auto confirm vs against your favored enemies
- Dolorous Blow - The weapon's threat range is doubled, and its critical threats automatically confirm.
- Curse of Arrow Attraction - Critical threats by ranged weapons on target of the spell are automatically confirmed
- Critical Strike - +4 insight bonus on rolls made to confirm critical hit while flanking

- Bonecrusher: +10 to confirm critical hits if target fails a Fort save. Lasts until fully healed.
- Claw at the Moon: +4 bonus on your roll to confirm critical hit during maneuver.

- Necrocarnum Weapon - Soulmeld - +1/essentia
-Andras - Vestige - +4 to confirmation

Other suggestions welcome

Solarian Truesteel from BOED, a weapon material with a +1 untyped bonus to confirmation rolls.

Instinctive Consummator Feat from Complete Psionic-expend your psionic focus to automatically confirm a critical threat against a living foe.

Bless Weapon auto-confirms against evil and can be bought as a +1 weapon ability in MiC, or the spell Dolorous Blow (SpC) will auto-confirm crits while also doubling your range.

Abyssal Bloodiron (PlH) gives +4 to confirm crits, but it's so expensive you're better off buying magic unless you absolutely positively need to confirm crits all day long.

It should go without saying that expanding crit range is much more important and since they generally cost the same resources, you're better off doing that. Crit confirmation rolls only start being important when you have auto-threats, which is basically what, Hunter's Mercy? Or when you're making enough attacks at a high enough bonus that your low-bonus attacks actually have a good chance of landing a threat which they will then need to confirm.

Speaking of, the Blackguard gets the Corrupt Weapon spell, inverting Bless Weapon: auto-confirm critical threats against Good aligned targets.

Relevant to the current Junkyard Wars: 2 levels in Incarnum Blade will give you a +4.

Just because I have MoI open, the Necrocarnum Weapon soulmeld gives +1 per essentia.

Flesh ring of scorn (MIC) automatically confirm critical hits 3/day, but take damage based on critical damage modifier.

Binding Andras gets you +4.

Murderous Intent makes you automatically confirm crits against favored enemies.

Performing a Coup de Grace results in an automatic critical hit.

Distort Weapon (BoVD) is a spell that automatically confirms any crit versus a Good foe.

Flesh Ring of Scorn (also BoVD) is a Ring that allows an Evil Outsider to automatically confirm critical hits vs. non-Outsiders. EDIT: Ah, this was over-written by MiC.

Initiator level 5 allows for the 3rd level maneuver Bonecrusher. If a melee hit connects with this strike, confirmation rolls get a +10 bonus

Since nobody else has said it, I will state the obvious.
You do not want to increase Crit damage. Whatever situation you come up with, the party enemies will do also at some point.
Crits (and death by massive damage rules) always work against the players. Sure it leads to easier kills against Giant number 1, but it leads to giant number 2 killing the player character.
High swings in damage will always, in the long run, be detrimental to the survivability of the party.

Curse of Arrow Attraction (Player's Handbook 2) Critical threats by ranged weapons on target of the spell are automatically confirmed
Critical Strike (Complete Adventurer/Spell Compendioun) +4 insight bonus on rolls made to confirm critical hit while flanking

Items:
Oil of bless weapon: Weapon automatically confirms crits against evil foes.

Maneuvers:
Claw at the Moon (Tome of Battle): gives extra damage and a +4 bonus on your roll to confirm critical hit during maneuver.
Bonecrusher (Tome of Battle): gives extra damage and a +10 bonus on attacks to confirm critical hits during maneuver.

He is assuming a "fit the party" style DM who scuplts encounters to exactly fit the party.

Some degree of this is common, but not all DM's treat this as an absolute. I myself have run open world, zero scaling games where the party of 8th level adventurers stopped a journy to deal with a tribe of uncivilized mostly no class level goblins. There where like 16 of them and the party stomped.

Because the village seemed nice and they wanted to build up a good reputation in the area.

They also skirted WAY around the great wyrm red dragon's mountain. That was also a fight that would be a stomp, but a very different stomp.

Nevermind about Surge of Fortune. I thought you could force a 20 on the confirmation, but the spell specifically points out you cannot.
