There are several monsters/abilities that require a caster level check (not spell resistance) in order to resolve/bypass a certain affect. For example a bearded evil who has caused a target to bleed, in order to stop the bleeding with a healing spell a spellcaster must make a DC 16 caster level check or the spell has no effect. However, say a character such as a Paladin used lay on hands to heal the subject, Lay on hands being a SU ability that doesn't mimic a spell doesn't really have a caster level. In this instance would lay on hands bypass the need for a caster level check or would the paladin in question essentially roll a 1d20+his paladin level to emulate a caster level check?

The Bearded Devil's ability specifies cure spells or the heal spell. The Paladin's ability is not a spell and thus, would heal the subject normally, but also would not stop the bleeding.

... Unless otherwise noted, a supernatural ability has an effective caster level equal to the creature’s Hit Dice.
There you go.
