View Full Version : Power Attack + Constrict?

I have a warblade in my party who likes to grapple. He's taken crushing weight of the mountain, and has pumped his grapple modifier high enough to be relevant. However, the damage is somewhat lacking (2d6 + 1.5 Str + 1d6 armor spikes), especially compared to the potential offered by Power Attack. So, I have two questions:

Can you take a penalty on your grapple checks to increase the damage dealt by constrict? (This is useful to know for monsters, too.)
Would it be unbalanced/bad for the game to allow the above, if RAW doesn't?

As a side note, are there any other neat ways to increase grappling damage (other than size increases, which we're already aware of)?

I'm fairly certain that Power Attack is still useful here. Crushing Weight of the Mountain gives the Warblade the Constrict (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/specialAbilities.htm#constrict) ability. He still has to follow all of the normal Grapple (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/combat/specialAttacks.htm#grapple) rules, and anywhere an attack roll is called for he will suffer the penalty. But the damage penalty will kick in on his Constrict attacks, as well as any other attacks he is able to make while in the grapple. Note that power attack specifically states you can apply the damage bonus to unarmed strikes and the grapple rules state you do damage as with an unarmed strike.

Edit: here is a handbook on the subject that might be worth reading: Hulkamania is runnin' wild (a grappling handbook) (http://minmaxforum.com/index.php?topic=585.0)

Actually, it’s a step better: you can Power Attack, and the bonus would apply to the construct damage, but there wouldn’t be a panel try to grapple checks. Power Attacks penalties apply to attack rolls, not grapple checks. Their bonus, however, applies to melee damage rolls, which Constrict is.

Power Attacks penalties apply to attack rolls, not grapple checks.

I wasn't referring to the grapple check itself. But there are numerous points within the grappling rules where attacks can occur. Power attack penalties apply to all attacks you make until your next turn, so would apply if any of these occurred.
"Starting a grapple requires a successful melee attack roll."
"You make a melee touch attack to grab the target."
"You can make an attack with an unarmed strike, natural weapon, or light weapon against another character you are grappling."
