Participated (and just learned about it) at my school today. A moving group of about 20 kids just wandering around campus with a free hugs sign just like that and a few free hugs shirts. I think I want one now.

It was also in our campus newspaper so that's probably why it happened.

*Hugs everyone who might come to this thread*

I hadn't heard of it, but I think it's a great idea!! Tomorrow I'll march down the streets with my "Free Hugs" advertisement.

I've seen this before, but considering the people holding the signs were high school girls and I'm a somewhat scruffy looking post-college-age male, I went ahead and avoided the inevitable legal trouble and just smiled and waved.

They seemed happy, though, and that definitely cheered me up.

I think yesterday was actually the official Free Hug Day, but I think that the world can use a hug today more than yesterday.

edited because I can't spell...

I need a "Free Hugs" t-shirt. I'd wear it every laundry cycle.

Just a day? I think Free Hugs should be more than a cute little mini-holiday; it's an attitude, something you bring with you everyday. If you read the Free Hugs Campaign (http://www.freehugscampaign.org/) story, it explains the background of the idea, that it's more than just a day but a lifestyle. It's heartwarming, really.

Who would want to hug a brick wall. It doesn't seem like it would be very comforting.

Anyway it sounds interesting, but I'm not a hug person. I won't even hug my friends.

Remind me not to go those places when they're giving free hugs. Hugs from random people are scawwy...

I've run into a few people on the street who were giving away free hugs, possibly as part of their laundry cycle... I'm not sure (this was on 2 different days this past year). And despite being rather wierded out, I partook anyways. What can I say? Hugs are nice, and one of those few things where both parties can give equally without losing anything.

Do you get a saving throw against hugs?

Do you get a saving throw against hugs?

yup, but extreme cuteness can give steep modifiers against.

i recommend just joining in the mutual hug-fest, or if not armour covered in big spikes.

This summer at Comic-Con there were droves of free hug sign holders. It turned into a hug fest in the hallway as it packed up.

Whilst i think hugging is the best thing since sliced bread think of the damage that irresponsible "overhug" could cause... physical injury from crushing.... blocked streets as crowd break into spontaneous mass group hug.... society collapsing as everyone starts being nice.... oooh the humanity

See, this is the kind of thing we huggers enjoy. People who feel all awkward about it. When we get them, we give them bear hugs and (if possible) lift them off the ground. Embrace the embrace, lest it embrace you.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all supportive of these free-hug things.

I just am a) Very paranoid and b) Don't really like hugging friends, let alone random people.

It's one thing I don't like...I just can't hug people. :smallfrown:

Nothing wrong about that.
While I think hugging friends is okay, normal, acceptable or even enjoyable, hugging strangers is at least weird, if not outright creepy or rude. I'd consider it rude if someone just hugged me or pressured me into hugging everybody by having a "hug-fest".
Seriously, where's your personal distance?

They had a thing like this at the hospital near my work; it was a 'bless day'. basically, you would walk around the hospital, in and out, and give people blessings in your own religion; Wiccan, Christian, Muslim, whatever. It made me feel better about the direction of the world.
