In 3.5 there was a system for familiars and animals that level with you. For druids and rangers you were able to replace with a stronger animal but take penalties on that lvl up system
In 5e it’s just rangers, and the only thing that they lvl off of is your proficiency mod. But what if that’s enough?
What if 1/4 is as normal
1/4 large is -1 proficiency mod
1/2 is -1
1/2 large -2
Etc
I like PHB beast master and that’s what I’m playing around with. I know what they were going for and feel -proficiency blends well (harder to train bigger and stronger beasts)
That or thinking -2 per jump
