the game will be starting at 10th level and probably going to 20th

Depends if you mean homebrewing it (which is the only way you'll get that close mechanically) or getting as close as possible RAW. If you mean the latter, then a Hexblade Warlock fits with the Weapon-type Over Soul feel, and you can re-fluff it accordingly. Toss in some necromantic spells for flavor -- Speak with Dead, etc. and you're as there as RAW can probably get you alone.

Homebrewing it could be an interesting way to go, frankly, but it would require a load more work...

I'm not familiar with the character, or manganime, but a glimpse of the series' Wikipedia page makes the Shaman King sound like a world-shaping deity of some variety (or, at the very least, a Patron-level powerful being).

What would be the top requirements for a character to act in your conception of a shaman-king? Think High-level design goals

So the Shaman King itself is a deity level thing, but I think he's looking for a character in the vein of a shaman from the series. In other words, a spiritualist who can imbibe willing spirits to make use of their skills in combat or life. High level Shamans can also place the spirits into objects to magnify their power -- a samurai spirit placed inside a katana, for example, allows for a great deal of power.

There's not really a good analog in 5E or DnD in general, although it might be an interesting homebrew challenge to make a similar feeling class.

Sounds like the best analog would be a combination of Ancestral Guardian Barbarian and Forge Cleric. The heavily armored player can call on the spirits to create things, to smite (when not raging), to Disrupt their enemies (while raging), and place spirits into their armor or weapons (using the refluffed Blessing of the Forge), including being able to animate another weapon (refluffed Spiritual weapon).

Core would be Forge Cleric 1/AG Barb 3, STR>WIS>CON>DEX>CHA/INT. Everything's online at Barb 5/Cleric 8, and probably the endgame would look something like Barb 9/Cleric 11.

Nature or Life Cleric.

Make use of Spiritual Weapon and Spirit Guardians.

Difficult as shamans in the manga/anime vary greatly, some fighting with spirit-infused weapons, some let their spirits fight for them, some raise zombies, some fuse with their spirits iirc...
Most of those things work with Hexblade warlocks, not necessarily with blade pact - having a „spirit“ sprite or imp hits the flavor of the manga, i guess.
Other possibilities include shepherd druids, ancestral guardian barbarians, clerics/divine soul sorcerers/bards with spirit guardians and/or spiritual weapon...
