Who intervenes

I see three possibilities.

Odin sending him back to complete the task. Fell in his feasting hall.

HeL she wants to claim the soul of her "priest"

Thor but I do not know why.

Yes, a bunch of gods who have to have really specific rules for dealing with each other and how each can interact in the world will totally intervene/meddle/stir the pot just for funsies.

5 gold says the gods do exactly what they're supposed to do about someone dying- nothing at all.

Yes, and every case they argued about was vague (and Thor was reaching, honestly). Durkon and Minrah are clear-cut honor deaths, though. Not to mention that Hel and Thor argued in the presence of the dwarf in question, and in a very different place.

Not the first time (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0737.html). The first time is a solid position: died of an infection after defending an orphanage from a mummy.

Agreed, which is why I didn't quote it. At this point it does seem that the Universe can determine clear-cut heroic deaths and skip Hel's gauntlet automatically, yes. It is not what I would have expected, but there we go.
