View Full Version : Music Strangest song that you think is actually really awesome

There's a lot of music that could be regarded as highly experimental, silly, extravagant, or just outright weird.

I was just tidying up my music collection and get some old stuff sorted I have not listed to in ages. And when I came across Apocalyptica I just had to put on Seemann (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v-YzdvmD2aQ) at full volume.
It's a cover of a Rammstein song on cellos and they got Nina Hagen on board as the singer. Who is just all around weird in a really awesome way.

And I really like this song! I think it's the oddest thing in my collection.

The absolute weirdest thing that could come up if I put my music on shuffle is the Fantasy Costco jingle from The Adventure Zone. There are several They Might Be Giants songs that are close.

Weird AND good though? Probably Frontier Psychiatrist by The Avalanches.

I think most things I listen to probably fall under this category. Some of it is relative; throat singing sounds weird to western ears until you get used to it, but in parts of the world is completely normal. Outsider music of any variety (Jandek, Wesley Willis, Bruno S., etc) is going to be weird by its nature. ANY sort of noise genre is going to be pretty strange. I like a lot of psych and psych-folk, which many people find strange or offputting. And I LOVE cartoon theme songs, mostly for this reason.

But if we're just going to pick one, let's go with the surrealist music of Nurse With Wound. This is one of the more accessible tracks!

"Bonehead" by Naked City. If you've ever seen the movie Funny Games, it's the song from the intro.

I listen to a lot of J-Rock and video game music, but I think one of the stranger songs I enjoy is Omoide wa Okkusenman. (That's probably spelled terribly wrong).

It started as Dr. Wily's Castle from Mega Man 2, but somehow they added lyrics that made it about loving Ultraman as a kid and growing up and finding it less acceptable to go back to the things in your childhood, it got popularized on japanese chan boards, and then finally JAM Project picked it up and did an incredible rock rendition of it that has more hot blood than your body has room for.

Hm... I guess I'd go with Whistler's Delight by DJ Riko, Revolution 9 by The Beatles, Race Car Ya-Yas by Cake, or Thanks For Your Time by Gotye.

Revolution #9 is not a song, sorry.

Found this one due to somebody on this forum sharing it several years ago: a mashup someone on the internet made of Sonic Adventure 2's Live and Learn and the Ducktales Theme Song (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ALJy4NFBHqE). By no stretch of the imagination should something that nonsensical work as well as it does.

Probably my favorite Pearl Jam song, no sarcasm. Not THAT weird, except when taken in the context of the band's general output.

I'm kinda hooked on Van Canto, a-capella power metal. Their covers of Kings of Metal (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IiESgYr35gA) and Fear of the Dark (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uh3qlhphEp8) in particular are great. I compare it to those old Magic Eye posters; it sounds weird until something clicks and then you stop hearing the voices and just hear the music.

In the mid 90s I was hooked on a band called Ethyl Meatplow. I'm pretty sure any of their songs would fit this category. First a warning for everyone the language is ROUGH.

Loved that Ethyl Meatplow video! Sort of reminded me of Circulus (not so much musically, but they're also pretty weird, so they should go here)

Do we all love Leslie Hall? We should all love Leslie Hall. Her video for Tight Pants/Body Rolls gets posted around a bit, as well it should:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J1c2KzJbcGA
But I'm also a big fan of No Pants Policy
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=de9w02gon1E
She has dance pop songs about crafting and making gem sweaters. Nothing but love for Leslie!

Pivoting to video game soundtracks. Terry Scott Taylor did the soundtracks to The Neverhood and Skullmonkeys back in the late 90s. They sound like if Tom Waits was a cartoon character and they are astounding. A sample:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a9BFMGjrJTI
Or if you want to cut to the chase, both soundtracks in full:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pEjBlL64SuU
I cannot recommend this enough!

I was certainly pleasantly surprised. The words a capella and metal didn't really sound ok in my head, but it works.

Most of Niel Ciccierega's "Mouth" songs qualify, but Annoyed Grunt probably takes the cake.

The song it leads into on the album is less weird, but even better. And will completely screw you up the next time you hear the Ghostbuster's theme. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0tdyU_gW6WE)

Nice! I haven't thought about them since they had that whiskey commercial. They're pretty cool, yeah.

This one's fairly weird too considering at a fundamental level it's just busy pop music.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VMlp1wY1QpA

It partly weirds me out cuz of the opening lines, growing up a constant recurring theme in my dreams was I'd be hovering a couple inches off the ground in otherwise normal real life situations.

Ah yes, Van Canto. A capella power metal. Gotta love it, it really has no business working as well as it does.

It does put me in a bit of a bind for this thread, it's pretty hard to find something weirder that still works... I guess I have to pull out the big guns, then.

Behold! BABYMETAL!

J-Pop. Metal. Never shall the two meet. Except, yes, they totally should and it's hilarious. Idol culture J-Pop meets Power Metal. To sing about chocolate. It is very Japanese in all the best ways.

I'll pitch a classic here: Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody. Everyone knows it, the classic rock stations still play it daily, and yet it is downright bizarre. Familiarity makes it seem like part of our cultural background - which makes it seem all the more unique to me.

Good point! Although I do feel I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that the Who paved the way 9 years earlier with A Quick One While He's Away (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rX1X-BjwI5I).

(I know, I know, it's not the 1966 version, but it *is* the BEST version. Jump to 4:55 in for the actual music to start.)

Ah, I thought you meant counterintuitive rather than simply odd. (May as well put it in: the most counterintuitive song I adore is Decode by Paramore. This is accomplished by completely ignoring the existence of Twilight and substituting a context that would actually support the feeling of betrayal in the lyrics. Goes really well with the second verse of Skyfall, if you follow me.)

At any rate, odd and obscure songs are my bread and butter, but this one is still the clear winner:

I'd be surprised if anyone hadn't heard or ERock, who specialises in Metal covers of... pretty much whatever he feels like. A lot of movie and video game themes (my favourites by far being Skyrim (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yDE2VQzghp4) and Superman (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UG7ea3LBg2c) themes) but also more conventional music from Wagner's Ride of the Valkyries up to Highway To The Danger Zone and Gangnam Style.

I also must admit that I genuinely enjoy Wax Audio's mash-ups as much as I enjoy the original songs - Thunderbusters (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jiH1wNmZTII) is ridiculous, but I love it anyway. :smalltongue:

As for 'real' bands, I happen to think that Walk the Moon's Shut Up And Dance (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6JCLY0Rlx6Q) was the best song of 2014... but I'll be damned if I can find anyone who agrees with me, or even remembers it.

Mr. Tinkertrain by Ozzy Osbourne.

It's about a pedophile. And not like Miracle Man, where it's about the person getting busted. The lyrics are a guy trying to lure a girl to his house with candy. It's really, incredibly weird. It's also (ignoring the lyrics, because c'mon) the best song on the album. I kinda get annoyed at how Zakk Wylde loves his pinch harmonics a bit too much, but that music is just badass.

Oh, also, it really sounds like the mixer or sound engineer or whoever was asleep at the wheel; the song ends really abruptly, and even knowing that, it sounds like the CD skips. It's really weird. I'm almost positive it was supposed to be a fadeout, but that never made it into the final cut.
