One of my players during a session had run out of arrows and wasn't close enough to a enemy to perform a melee attack so, he described how he wanted to remove his pommel and throw it at the enemy to deal damage...honestly I am not so sure whether I hate this out love it and now that player is working with a artificer NPC to try and gain a magical sword that generates infinite magical pommels, any thoughts on this?

It's basically a thrown rock, but probably worse (the size is off). Sadly thrown rocks never made it on the weapon table, but I figure 1d3 for the pommel is reasonable. Same with the infinite magical pommels, though that's definitely more a tool than a weapon at that point.

Ah Ending him Rightly..... a joke made by a martial master many years ago.

If you want information on this check out this youtube video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jETLCm7k3sU).

Heh I would say sure I would say make it maybe a +1 weapon of whatever type it is and then as a bonus action they can uncrew and throw the pommel by making a ranged attack and making the pommel a 1d4 damage.

A sling costs next to nothing and has better range, so I doubt a 1d4 magic pommel toss will break anything. The player is spending resources for what is essentially a bit of fun. It’ll either get old quickly, and he’ll stop, or provide a few laughs at the table if used sparingly and thematically.

What’s not to like?

You cant just take off a pommel, thats what holds the handle guard and blade together, usually by rivet making it irremovable.

But we are flinging fireballs at dragons and such, so why not? Go ahead and use your sword a s a crowbar too, thats obviously not damaging at all to the blade.

How long to you reckon it would take to remove a pommel that was secure enough to not fall off in the middle of battle in the first place?

Anyway, Improvised thrown weapons do 1d4 damage with a range of 20/60, unless the DM rules it similar enough to an existing weapon to use that weapons stats.

1d4 (because awesome) + Str/Dex damage.

Though, kinda reminds me off...

Well... if they're an artificer, consider this! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ITuZz9g_K3g
