Vengeance Paladin and Hunters Mark

I am running a campaign with a couple Vengeance Paladins. One has brought up the idea that Hunters Mark does not burn a spell slot for Paladins.

Is there something I am missing?

No. There is no such thing in the rules. It burns a slot like any other spell. They just always have the spell prepared, as an Oath Spell.

That is not at all true.

They are probably misunderstanding their Oath spells. They are always prepared without using up one of the Paladin's spell preparations, but they still must use spell slots to cast them.

It's a 1st level spell, vengeance paladins have no special ability to make it not take a spell slot.

The Sacred Oath part has this to say:

"Oath spells don't count against the number of spells you can prepare each day."

I suspect they misinterpreted this rule as 'doesn't count against the number of spells you can cast each day'. Small word, big difference.
